“Nice beach...but....”
Reviewed 10 April 2014

We visited this resort as a "beach day" excursion for a morning as an excursion from a cruise ship. We were met by Dion in the parking lot when we arrived by cab who gave us a fine welcome and escorted us to the beach to find our loungers. Having visited this same beach in Dickenson Bay last December, we knew that the beach was outstanding. The real issue was that the resort's "life guard", with only 30 minutes remaining of our stay there, decided to try to squeeze money out of us and many others around us. At one point, even though I was saying nothing, the life guard decided to threaten me and say "I will run circles around you and pound you into the sand". This was witnessed by others and everyone was appalled. Horrible behaviour, to be sure.

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident which is not related to the resort..We only allow beach access to the tour operator representing the cruise ship passengers and the life guard in question represent to tour operator and Not the resort.
Hope you will choose Halcyon Cove in your future travel.

I have visited Antigua many times as it is beautiful getaway from the usual English weather! When staying in Antigua we always plan our stay at the Halcyon Cove and here are the reasons why:

Pro's

-The location is excellent- beautiful sandy beach and a quick journey into the capital (St.Johns)
-The staff- friendly and always up for a chat, most of the bad reviews on here about the staff are a myth to me and many of my friends who have visited this hotel, never have I experienced rude or inappropriate behaviour towards their guests.
- The food- the food is of excellent standard, however it can get a little repetitive ddont get me wrong
-The hotels premises itself- it has a lot to offer and some things to do.
-The rooms- are of a good size but do need refurbishing

Cons
- The hotel- it needs updating and can appear a little run down
- The entertainment- is on every night except Sunday's, it gives it that Caribbean cultural flare, however it can get a little loud as you can hear it very clearly in your rooms until 11 o'clock.
-The towels- the towels are quite run down now at the halcyon but a few years ago the hotel was a lot more cleaner with them as the towels were actually bought/made by rex resorts.
The pool- the pool is quite small for the complex but why would you rather spend your time beside a pool (which you can do in any country) than be sat on the beach or having a relaxing swim in the sea
-The pier restaurant- beautiful place to eat at night however you do have to book your visit and sometimes they don't have the food you want to eat.

Overall

No this place isn't perfect, I know, but the truth is it has a lot of potential. As a reader I know you have the choice to chose weather to ignore the good and or bad reviews but some of the bad reviews are a little eccentric with what the problems actually are. So basically if you are up for an action packed holiday this is not the hotel for you, but if you want a nice relaxing break with or without your family then this IS the hotel you would want to stay at.

Room Tip: When wanting your towels washed leave them on the floor in the bathroom floor- the maids will then r...

This was our first holiday in Antigua and it wont be our last. It was incredible. The food was brilliant, there was always something to eat. We even had beef and Yorkshire pudding cooked to perfection! (Thank you Dale!) The staff in the restaurant were brilliant very attentive. Topping up our drinks which I don't think was a good idea as some people have the evidence on film hahaha
Everything was clean and tidy. Rooms were brilliant, they were cleaned everyday.
Pool was very clean. Plenty of beds and parasols on the beach and around the pool.
The staff were fantastic, they couldn't help you quick enough. There were managers cocktails, where there was a garden party and you met ALL the staff. What a great idea!
Fenton and his team worked very hard to entertain us. My husband did aqua aerobics, he was persuaded on the last day. They tried to kill him. At least I had some peace as he slept all afternoon.
We did some trips. Visited Montserrat for the day using the ferry with Jenny's tours. We did a 4x4 tour of the whole island using pelican tours. These were all booked with Dwayne in the hotel lobby at the tourist information desk. He was very helpful, knowledgeable and professional.
We met some fantastic people, and made some fantastic friends!
Thank you Halcyon Cove for a great holiday. We hope to see you soon.
All our love

We stayed at Halcyon Cove, during march break and we enjoyed our vacation. Yes, this hotel is old and tired, the garden is not lush, but we had very good service. The staff was friendly and helpful. We reserved 4 rooms, we had 10 people in our group (family and friends) and initially we got smaller rooms that were apart. The manager, a very pleasant man, gave us better rooms that were close together. I believe these were time share rooms in the main building. They were spacious and bright. The staff was very friendly and tried very hard to entertain our teenagers (with cricket and beach volleyball) and they were fun people, epecially Fenton. The biggest advantage- the hotel is small and quiet. The beach is beautiful.

This was our second visit to this Hotel, we first stayed here in 2011.

On arrival at reception we were given wet face cloths and a pleasant rum punch, we then set about filling in the necessary check-in paperwork after which we were escorted to our room by the porter. On entering the room we were completely thrown, the room must be the worst on the resort, it was dark, very shabby and the bathroom stank, there was no fridge or tea/coffee making facilities and the air-conditioning didn't work. Also the flat screen TV as advertised in the holiday brochure turned out to be an old box set from the 80s. The overall impression was of a dilapidated room and we did not want to unpack. I immediately went back to reception to request another room and was told that there was nothing available but to come back in the morning as there may another room available then. I returned to the room discussed this with my wife after which she went to reception to try again. Same response, try again tomorrow. At this point I would have left the hotel as we were not prepared to stay in such an awful room. However, I again went to reception to ask for a move to another room, this time the receptionist asked me to wait and disappeared into the back office, returning a few minutes later and gave me the key to another room,.

She then arranged for a porter to transfer us and our luggage and on arrival at our new room we were not disappointed, bright airy room, lovely view everything in place and working, air-con had a mind of it's own but worked well. I should also point out the we had e-mailed the hotel prior to our arrival requesting the same room as our last visit but received no response, however having had replies from other e-mails I sent I know they received it.

The strength of this hotel is it's fabulous location, spectacular beach and friendly staff although it's very tired and dated and in need of investment, it does however have loads of potential.

The food in the Arawak Restaurant and Carib grill is very good, plenty of choice to suit all, and the weekly Bar-B-Q is excellent. Breakfast in the Arawak is great with plenty of choice, such as omelettes or crepes or any other egg you fancy, Wines served for lunch or dinner are very good whichever you go for red, white or rose.

One disappointment. The Warri Pier, definitely not as good as 3 years ago. The menu now is the same as the Arawak restaurant but with less choice, there are a few extra dishes on the menu, which AI guests have to pay a lot extra for, and the starters and deserts are now buffet style. Worth a visit though just to sit over the Caribbean Sea. The staff were great especially Charleen the supervisor.

Entertainment was very good every night, from dancers to fire act to steel bands to ordinary bands, there was something to suit all tastes. Sunday was the only night without entertainment as most people go Shirley Heights.

Service in both the bars was great, Orlando in the lobby bar and in particular Dalston in the Carib bar who went out of his way to look after us.

Thanks to all the staff, in particular Fenton, who makes this hotel the happy, fun and friendly place that it is. Thanks also to Roxanne, restaurant supervisor, who warmly welcomed us back
and her friendly manner with us and all the other guests.

Beach towels very small, could do with being a bit bigger. Room towels in short supply had to ask on 3 occasions as none in room, they'd apparently run out. Take your own face cloths, they are not supplied.

Overall we had a great holiday despite the initial hiccup, just goes to show if you're not happy tell them and hopefully they can sort it for you.

Would we go again. Yes but Rex Resorts really need to invest in this property. They are doing essential maintenance at present but it needs more than a patch here and there.

We absolutely loved it! Ok the rooms could do with updating but they are clean and well equipped. The food was excellent, plenty of variety and very well cooked. The staff are simply delightful, very friendly and will do anything for you. Special mention for Orlando in the lobby bar who was an excellent cocktail maker and very entertaining company. We are definitely planning another visit and are even persuading some friends to come with us as we'd like to share the experience.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the pool but as music stops at 11pm the music did not interrupt our sleep.
