We Stayed at Sandals Grande Antigua from 3/24 - 3/31 and had a very enjoyable week. The island is beautiful and the people were all very nice.
Our experience upon arrival was very easy, we arrived on Saturday and were worried the customs line would be long with a 2:00 arrival but we breezed right through with no hiccups. We then went out to the Sandals window outside and in about 15 mins we were loaded and on our way. After a quick 20 minute ride we arrived at Sandals.
Upon arrival we were greeted by cold towels and champagne cocktail and sat for a quick check in and were taken off to our room. We had booked the Sunset Bluff but were pleasantly surprised to have been upgraded to a Beachfront Walkout Suite in the Frangipani building (Caribbean side - which we preferred and were glad we made that decision). This was a newly upgraded room. We were in room 108 and our friends were in 104. They were in the perfect spot - at the end of the resort but with a small pool in front and the beach right there. I literally think we stepped off our patio and it was 20 steps to the beach. This was extremely convenient for us. Since we had no desire to be at the main pool it was the perfect spot for us! Thank you to Dihanna for taking such good care of us!
After checking in we walked around the resort a little bit and went straight for Pizza! It was very good and was served quickly about 20 minutes. It was a nice snack and we grabbed a beer and toured the property.
Our first night for dinner we did Mario's - The food was very good and the Antipasto Bar was fresh and had a great selection. We all ordered different things and enjoyed each one. Service was very good.
The second night we went to Kimono's - Our Chef was extremely entertaining and the food was good. We enjoyed each course - Fish/Shrimp, Beef, Chicken and the rice was good with it too!
Third night was the beach party - Get there early if you want to eat there - we went a little late and the selection wasn't very good and you could tell they were rushing to get things out as it wasn't cooked to perfection. The entertainment was great and dancing on the beach was fun and good exercise.
Fourth Night - This was the OK Corral, service is a little slower here but really where are you going, our server was great and took good care of us. The food was good and the atmosphere is very nice.
Wednesday Night - This was the repeaters dinner and was done very well - We went to the reflection pool for cocktails and then to the banquet room on the Mediterranean side for dinner. Dinner was Lamb and Shrimp as was very good. It was nice to see so many repeaters and we sat with a young lady from England that is on Management training. She also had taught our tie dye class too!
Thursday Night - We did Eleanor’s and of course had the Lobster! It was amazing, not overcooked at all and my friend and I enjoyed it while the boys had Beef. The atmosphere was amazing.
Our last night we chose to go back to Mario’s and that was good again - There was a bit of a wait due to no reservations but we were patient and got seated and it was very good. I would recommend the Spaghetti Carbona.
Breakfast - We did the buffet most days but did try the Al a Carte at Ok Corral once and that was nice and it was a little slow but once you ordered it came quickly. The buffet was all good the usual stuff; make to order eggs, lots of bread and pastries and fruit and hot entrees too.
Lunch - Let me start by saying Ester! She was amazing at Barefoot for lunch! We went there once and the next time she remembered all four of drink orders! She was so prompt with everything and took great care of us. Don't miss the Jerk Chicken or the Ribs both were really good! We did try Cricketers once and the burgers were good but we missed being outside in the air. So I would stick to Barefoot for lunch. The pizza we had several days and it did not disappoint I wish I had a pie right now!
The building we stayed in was as far as you could get from the Main pool and Mediterranean side BUT we were thrilled with that honestly. Most of the Restaurants were on the Caribbean side and the beach was less busy on that side.
Beach - It was beautiful and the water was nice, clear, no rocks. You did have to get up early to get a shade but we had on each day by about 7 ish... We always were at the far end. The cruise ships were right next to us that was probably our only downside to the beach. The vendors were fine, we were right next to their building and they were nice to us all week. The beach service - Let me give a big shout out to Miss Sydonna! She was always cheerful and took great care of us each day on the beach. I hope the new people in our chairs are as good to her as we were! The local dog that was there was absolutely adorable - We named him Cruiser for the week and our friends with us fed him some bacon each day although he seemed to be well cared for and enjoyed the tourist. Give him a scratch behind the ears from us on your visit!
We did do the Sunset Cruise on Friday Night - It was very nice and they take you a little ways around the island and you can see the views and enjoy the sunset with a few cocktails!
We enjoyed the entertainment each night; the local people are extremely talented. Thank you to them for letting us share your island. We did go to the Casino next door it’s small and has tables and also slots.
The service was good; they all took very good care of us! People say Island Time but I say relax you are on vacation ;) Again thanks to Dihanna (Front Desk), Sydonna (Beach Service), Ester (Barefoot), and Phylicia (Main Bar Caribbean side). We will never forget any of you.
We certainly would recommend Antigua and Sandals to anyone that wants to go. The reason for the four star and not the five would only be because we have had better food at other resorts and even though it was good it wasn't amazing. We would go back but for now we are off to the next adventure.
Please feel free to ask any questions and if you are thinking about booking it don't think just do it! They will not disappoint you!
Any questions don't hesitate to ask me!
