“Our first Sandals experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2014

This was our first Sandals experience and it won't be our last. From the moment we arrived we were treated like VIP's. The room, the restaurants, the pools, the beach, the grounds, every thing about this resort was "second to none".
We have travelled to many places over the years and we are in position to play the comparison game. There were 2 other couples travelling with us and we all agreed that we would probably change our holiday plans for next year to ensure that we stay at a Sandals resort.
So I guess Curacao is out for now.
A heartfelt thank you to Latoya (pool goddess) Ken & Kenisha (Mario's) and all the staff at the resort.

Room Tip: We had a concierge suite on the ground level. Nice patio. No need for stairs or elevators. Close to...

This was our 6th stay at this resort. We have booked for next year already. The entire staff from the General Manager to housekeping make it their business to make your stay excellent.
They treat you like they want you to come back. The five restaurants, pastery shoppe, the pub and the courtyard and beach side eateries prevent you from going hungry. The accomodations and beach all make it a place you can't resist.

Room Tip: come to just relax or take advantage of the myriad of activities.

My husband and I had such an incredible time at Sandals Grande Antigua! The beach is stunning, the pool is perfect, and the grounds were impeccably maintained. We stayed on the newer Mediterranean side and our room was perfect. Room and maid service was always timely and provided excellent service.

The food on the whole resort was very, very good. Although the portions were a bit small at some of the restaurants (Eleanors specifically), you can always request a second portion! I would highly recommend the pizza place and the hibachi place. Check out the Drunken Duck after hours - their peanut butter french toast is NOT to be missed. Remember, you are at an all inclusive resort, the food won't be 5 Stars. But, I was very happy with our meals, and would absolutely recommend the resort based on the food alone.

The beach was beautiful and the water was crystal clear - it was also VERY calm, no concerns about rip tides or waves. There are vendors that walk the beach, but they aren't pushy. They take "no" and do not bother you once you decline them. The only negative I witnessed during our stay was that some of the resort's security guards seemed to be "friendly" with some of the vendors. They allowed the vendors to steal the resort's beach chairs and umbrellas and use them. I found this to be a bit troubling, considering the amount we paid for the resort. Sandals should absolutely monitor these activities on the beach more closely.

The pool was large and clean. We never had issues with getting a chair. And there were always towels available. Bring several bottles of sunscreen - it is HOT and that sun is strong. We went through 5 bottles of sunscreen between the two of us. The staff at the resort were friendly and inviting, we never had an issue. We met some of the best people at the resort, people we still talk to today.

We look forward to staying at other Sandals properties in the future, because we enjoyed this one so much. Make sure you take the Zip lining trip and book a massage - NOT to be missed!

This was our 2nd trip to a Sandals resort, having spent our honeymoon in Jamaica in the Royal Caribbean nearly 10 years ago.
On the whole, our stay was very good, and several aspects were outstanding. There were however a few things that, in our opinion, prevented it from being a 5 star experience. For most people these will seem minor, but we thought they were worth mentioning nonetheless. So, for what it's worth, here is our feedback:

Positives: the real all-inclusive experience (branded drinks, generally really top quality food in all restaurants...); the beautiful location; the cleanliness and tidiness of the place, both buildings and gardens (and I'm very picky when it comes to this, so thumbs up!); the effort made for Sandals Select guests (we were grateful for our 2 anniversary cakes kindly provided); the Paris cafe was fantastic; the bed is really comfortable;

Negatives: animals. This issue is two-fold: 1) in some restaurants (Bayside & Barefoot) birds are flying around you as you eat. While this is not a problem when they steal leftovers at empty tables, it is really disgusting to see them picking food from the same buffet that you are also eating from. The biggest problem is the breakfast buffet at Bayside, where I saw birds eating from the peanut butter bowl, picking at biscuits and bread on platters, eating food from the hot food serving spoons, and stealing nuts from the jars. Although there is sometimes a member of staff on duty with a stick to chase them away, this is mostly ineffective. Our tip: eat the buffet breakfast at Mario's instead, it's indoors. 2) Cats. I love cats and have 2 of my own, so seeing them around the property wasn't an issue in itself. They generally only really come out at night, and they are friendly. However, if Sandals is happy to have cats around its property -perhaps as vermin control (no effort was made to chase them, they seemed at home)- then I believe it has a duty of care to these animals. It really pained me to see one in particular that was in clear need of medical attention (it had bald patches and problems with his eyes), not to mention the potential risk to humans if the cats are carrying diseases.

Other negatives: friendliness of staff was variable. Some were absolutely lovely (for example, Kelly the lady waitressing for the cabanas, or Mitty in the concierge service) but others were less so: the lady giving orientation kept on spitting in the grass, for example; our taxi driver for the Island Routes excursion was very grumpy (though I understand that he is not a member of Sandals staff per se); the hosting lady sitting guests down at OK Corral was abrupt...

Our room was a 'Sunset Bluff Honeymoon Luxury Club Level Room', and it was generally great. However, since Sandals advertises itself as a top luxury 5 star resort, I would suggest that the bathroom really needs updating to live up to those standards. There's only one sink, the shower is over the (small) bath and it's functional and clean, but not luxurious at all. I travel a lot and have had much nicer bathrooms in 4 star hotels.

The concierge service: it was really useful to have them make our restaurant bookings for us (perhaps they're worth it just for that, as it seems that other guests have had problems booking into Eleanor's). However, the one time I went in to make a real complaint they seemed to find it amusing and didn't offer a solution, so it didn't seem like good customer service to me.

The fact that the beach is public cannot be helped, but it is a real nuisance to repeatedly have to turn away people trying to sell you things- to be honest, it put us off going to the beach entirely.

Despite these mostly minor drawbacks, I would say that Sandals is still - at present- really worth the money. We had a fantastic holiday on the whole. However, we liked the atmosphere and individuality we felt better in the Jamaican Sandals resort - there seems to be a move by Sandals to harmonize its resorts (e.g. restaurants have been renamed/rebranded to be identical in many of their resorts), but I think that's a shame. It conceals the individuality of the islands, and every Sandals experience will be more bland as a result. Each island has its own identity and flavours, and we want to experience that when we travel there. By always staying in identikit Sandals, one might forget which island one actually travelled to...

My wife and I just returned from a 1 week stay at sandals grand antigua. Overall the resort was fantastic. There was an issue with our room upon our arrival but when we brought it to the attention of the management they took care of it immediately. The staff at the dive center were fantastic especially Fern one of the instructors. Also if you go make sure you hit the swim up pool on the Caribbean side of the resort and say hi to Latoya the bartender, she is the best I've met and really made the trip fun. The only down side was the staff who cleaned the rooms. While the rooms were clean they weren't really attentive to details and often left dirty dishes and glasses in the room

Just back from 10 nights at Sandals Grande Antigua for our wedding and honeymoon... going to approach the review in two parts; the general holiday bits and the wedding

HOLIDAY

Arrival
Arrived at Antigua- customs is quick and pain free in this dinky little airport. Know it is mentioned in lots of reviews, but beware the "porters" who work at the airport. We insisted on taking our own bags, but they grabbed another couples bags behind us and started wheeling them the 25m out of the airport to then demand money (apparently dollars or pounds was fine). Just say no!
Transfer in the sandals minibus was speedy and direct.
We had booked a concierge level room so were checked-in in the concierge lounge as opposed to reception (made very little difference to the holiday, began at this point to wonder what the point of "concierge" was).

Room
We stayed in room 820 which was conveniently located in the sunset bluff, in the middle of the Caribbean and Mediterranean sides. The suite was a good size, with nice balcony but basic bathroom. It was cleaned twice a day with plenty of fresh towels each time which we loved. The "mini bar" (which include 5 full sized bottles of spirits) and fridge were refilled daily.

Restaurants
We were a bit concerned about reviews mentioning huge birds swooping in on your lunch as you were mid mouthful, but it actually wasn't as bad as we expected. No issue at all in the evening, but Barefoot and Bayside are hit by little birds all through breakfast and lunch (to the point that Bayside have a fella with a stick employed to keep them off the buffet!!). If you eat here and get up for any reason, cover your food with a napkin or they will be all over your plate.

Marios- Had breakfast and dinner here. Decent breakfast selection. Dinner time is an Italian starter buffet with a la carte main. I enjoyed, my fella thought it was overrated.

Bayside- Had breakfast, lunch and dinner here. It is home to the most incredibly rude member of staff, to the point that ourselves and other guests were looking around at each other in disbelief one evening wondering if her attitude was some kind of joke. The majority of the staff are great however, and the breakfast and lunch buffets are both plentiful. Dinner was a little hit and miss. Some great food, some mediocre. Not once did they remember to bring us bread though everyone else seemed to have it brought straight over (little things, but I don't feel guilty expecting this given the price...)

Ok Corrall- my fella raved about the ribs, I was quite underwhelmed. Only ate here once

Kimonos- you may find this entertaining if you have never been for tappanyaki before... we were expecting great things as we go to a tappenyaki back home which we really enjoy, however it was flat! Food was fine, but absolutely no flair or theatre involved.

Soy- by far the most unorganised restaurant... nobody greets you on the way in, the member of waiting staff barely acknowledged us as we were seated. We had no chopsticks where everyone else did, and were looked at like dirt when we asked if we could have a folk or chopsticks to eat with, clearly it was our fault! We were not talked through the menu or ordering process, and there was only one chef for most of the time we were there, trying to deal with a very demanding group of 8 who believed it was their right to be served over and over again before he served the others sat in there. Tasty, but frustrating. We asked for a beer at the beginning of our meal, and it was brought to us after we had finished eating and given up all hope of it ever appearing.

Eleanors- worth booking. Probably the best dining experience we had here- though in my opinion their pina colada crème brulee should be avoided at all cost!!

Café de Paris- nice biscuits if you fancy something sweet by the pool. Lots of mini cakes (cheesecakes missing the base!) - don't think desserts are their forte. Cappuccino milkshakes are brilliant.

Bella Napoli- fine for a pizza by the pool. Wait can be surprisingly long since it's just for a pizza though.

Courtyard Bistro- handy quick wraps etc. for lunch snacks

Barefoot - Had lunch a couple of times, salads and burgers; fine apart from the birds!

Drunken Duck- "the British pub", that as a Brit I can say is not very British (how often do you see peanut butter french toast in a British pub?). That said, we had good burgers here one evening, and the staff were far and away the most attentive. As soon as our drinks were less than a third full another would appear. The karaoke here was certainly interesting, never seen so much encouragement, it was hilarious!

The Resort
Big pool is great- we spent most of our time there. We were offered plenty of drinks and enjoyed the swim up bar. MASSIVE issue with this resort is the lack of parasols. My fella burns like mad, and as I was getting married on the resort I vowed to stay out of the sun to avoid any unsightly tan marks in the dress. After getting up at 8am to try and find sunbeds with a parasol on the first two days we failed, and began to burn!! EVERY sunbed with a parasol was reserved by 7am at the latest, so we ended up having to take it in turns to get up at 6am to make sure we could get somewhere in the shade- hardly relaxing on holiday!! There are so many issues surrounding this. Firstly, the very best beds are reserved by the butlers overnight. One day we were next to one from 9.30 am and the couple didn't arrive to use the beds until 3pm... what is the point?? There were also a lot of couples who got beds with a parasol and then put it down?! This could be easily and cost effectively solved by Sandals by them just buying enough parasols for one between two beds (the price everyone is paying, it's not much to ask!). The gardens are beautiful, and very well maintained. The mozzies are out in force here so don't forget your spray (I still got bitten!). There are two small shops onsite that are typically overpriced and under-stocked but handy for emergencies. The beach is gorgeous; very well looked after for a public beach, though with the same issues of shade as by the pool. Everywhere you go; pool, beach, restaurant, you will see a photographer appear from nowhere and tell you to strike some cheesy pose- you can buy the pictures for about £12 a photo.... value!

Concierge
Was it worth it?? Hmmm. Don't know if I would have been bothered about check-in at reception as opposed to a building in the opposite direction to where our room was. We did get free wifi for the week; well wifi included rather than "free". I personally think it is unbelievable that for the price everyone does not have wifi. We were also able to order room service, which we did only once when we first arrived and were tired from the plane journey. Finally they advertised assistance with making restaurant reservations... when we asked about this they just directed us to the restaurant reservation desk. All in all, we couldn't see the added value of this room category- get a cheaper room and pay for wifi if you need it.

WEDDING

Pre wedding

We met with our wedding planner Nasasha on our first morning, and she was wonderful. She quickly understood that we wanted an understated, intimate wedding for just the two of us, and while it was her job to try and up-sell us things like petals and coloured sand, there was no pressure and we were able to keep it very simple. We had a glass of fizz and did some cake tasting. We picked our wedding day evening meal, and discussed honeymoon breakfast in bed.

When we said we weren't interested in spending hundreds on photos as there was just the two of us, we were offered a smaller photo package which we decided to go with (we were having a photographer at a big reception back home so found it a little self indulgent to spend a lot in Antigua too). We are glad we went for the smallest package.

As we decided to have photos I booked in to have my make up done. Nasasha kindly pointed out that our room was actually closer to the Mediterranean spa, and so booked me into that one for the day. I was slightly concerned when she booked it for 1 hour before I was due to be collected for the ceremony, but trusted her.

The trip into town to sign all the necessary documents was well organised, though we were held up by a couple who were running late.

On the day...

The great thing about getting married here is that we were both completely relaxed prior to the event.

I went to my make up appointment, arriving 5 minutes early, to find the spa shut. I asked at the desk if someone was coming over, and they said they probably were... I sat waiting for another 10 minutes, now only 50 minutes 'til I was going to get married. Make up not done, hair not done, dress not on. My previous calm was melting away. I messaged my fella and asked him to call the other spa. They told him I had got the arrangements wrong and began giving him directions over the phone to send me to the other spa site on the Caribbean side. I was fuming, I had not got it wrong, and had been specifically shown this spa at our pre-wedding meeting. Luckily Nasaha walked past at this moment, I explained what had happened and she called them and got someone sent over. 40 minutes before I was due to be collected I was finally getting my make up done. After showing up 20mins late she spent 20mins doing my make up. For $75... Ladies, if you are practised at doing your own make up, just do it yourself! She spent the whole time telling me I should let her do my hair for another $75 dollars even though I told her I was wearing it down.

Nasasha collected us to go to the ceremony and was lovely. I know it's her job to be complimentary but she does a great job of boosting your ego before you head down! We got married on the beach and then moved to the garden to sign all the paperwork, and it was perfect. We sat eating canapés and drinking fizz after, though couldn't hang about too long as the next wedding was about to start (there were 4 weddings that day!)

All the photos were taken in about 40mins, with quite a few cliché poses insisted upon. When we went to look at the pictures I'm sure they were convinced we would fall in love with them all and spend thousands. Honestly, the only pictures we liked were the few he had taken when he hadn't told us to pose, so that's what we got.

The honeymoon breakfast was a bit of a disaster. We got a call before it arrived to say "I know you ordered breakfast juices with a spalsh of champagne, but we haven't got any. We will try and find some and get it sent up." A few additional bits were missing from breakfast, and when they called to ask half an hour after breakfast if it was all ok, we said we still hadn't had any champagne. Another call to ask if it was ok half an hour after that, still no champagne. 3 different people then appeared over the next hour with bottles of fizz. Just a bit disorganised!

Not 5 star

We couldn't give a 5 star because no part of the holiday exceeded expectation given the price. It was lovely, and worth a 4 star, but we felt it was the minimum of what you should expect given the cost. For example, my father in law had a bottle of champagne delivered to our room as a surprise during our ceremony so we returned to find it. It cost him $110 dollars. It was warm, with no ice bucket, and with wine glasses rather than champagne glasses. We called and asked for an ice bucket, and it took 2 hours for it to arrive. The water in our bathroom also frequently went off for random periods of time; I know one of the other brides had no water at all on the day of her wedding and had to shower at the spa! We have been on all inclusive trips in Europe at a fifth of the price that have not offered the quality i.e. top brand spirits etc, but that have definitely offered the same if not better value for money. Luckily for Sandals, the location is idyllic, and if you drink enough rum the lack of attention to detail doesn't get on top of you too much.

TIP: pool cabana is never worth $100 a day. We used one as we got it free one day...

This was our first trip to a Sandals and I had read tons of reviews on this resort, we flew in on the 20th and the shuttle from the airport was quick considering the amount of people arriving, we were out of the airport within 15 minutes!! The drive is about 20 mins, it's not like driving back home in Canada, but they know what they are doing and they get you there, It was fun!! we stayed on the Carribean side, we were greeted with a cool towel and a glass of champagne, check-in was quick, our room was ready! We stayed in the Oleander building, room 628, pretty much the centre of the resort, its a two floor building and we were given a room on the second floor which was great, we loved the balcony over the less private walk out!! We didn't have a concierge or a butler, unless you are completely helpless and love bossing people around, you don't need one, I was personally disgusted by what people made the butlers do, but it's your call! We made dinner reservations for the restaurants at check-in, which was so easy and took two minutes! I suggest getting the cheaper rooms, we didn't have any problems and we barely spent time in the room. If you want a view of the whole resort and the ocean, stay in the hotel style med side building, but really, you can go up there anytime and get pictures! The med side rooms are newer, but the Carribean side rooms were excellent in our opinion!

The food is so good, we recommend the surf and turf at Bayside, lunch at Barefoot and pizza from bella napoli is amazing! All the food is great, you really can't go wrong!

The vendors on the beach are not Sandals fault, no beach in Antigua is private, they are all public, they can be pushy at times, but saying no thank you will keep them at bay! They aren't dangerous, we got a catamaran tour from one of them that was licensed and we had an amazing time!!! They are trying to make a living just like Sandals trys to sell you things while you are staying there, it's no different! if you treat the people with respect and be nice, they are just as nice back to you!!

I want to point out some amazing staff members at the resort!! First, Marie-Louise, she is a bartender at the main pool swim up bar and at barefoot, she is a wonderful woman that treated my wife and I like gold, she even got a red wine stain out of my wife's dress!! Latoya at the carribean side swim up bar is a gem, she was the first person to serve us a drink and she is so fun and friendly!! Delmore, the photographer is an island king, this guy is so friendly, he helped us when we first got to the resort and we will never forget him, he is also the wedding photographer and if you can get him to take photos of you, you won't regret it!!! I also want to mention Precious, Shameika in entertainment, and there are many others that need raises Mr. G!!!!

I'm not rich, and maybe if you are, you might expect more out of this resort, we loved it and we met so many nice couples here, some of whom we will see again!! If you read all the reviews, I hope you believe mine, we are a middle income couple that felt like a king and queen for the week!! Thanks to all the staff at Sandals Grande Antigua!!!

Room Tip: Carribean side is closer overall to the beach, med side is newer, but we loved the carribean side, i...
