“All you can imagine at an all-inclusive luxury resort”

This was our first holiday we'd taken in the past 13 years and also a belated honeymoon to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We wanted somewhere where we could renew our vows, relax and unwind without the worries of work or homelife. A beautiful paradise of a resort with humming birds flying amongst the colourful flora and fauna. Weather was lovely and warm even on the days when we had rain (liquid sunshine) and that was very little. Greeted by glass of champagne, canapes and cold flannels and as an added bonus we discovered that our room had been upgraded, even better, although a slight hiccup was that it wasn't quite ready for us but we went and had a bite to eat and cool drink for about an hour. Room was spacious and had eveything we wanted, free conceirge bar, fridge with cold drinks, very large plasma tv, very large 4-poster bed and even a great view of the gardens, pool and sea. Main pool was lovely with a swim-up bar, also many hidden smaller pools around the complex with the added bonus of going on the beach too. Staff were always on hand and very keen to help and assist at any time. We only wish we could have stayed longer and look forward to perhaps going again in the not too distant future, a most memorable and pleasurable holiday experience for us both.

We have been to Sandals once before, Dunn’s River Jamaica and absolutely fell in love with the property and Sandal’s style. We were not sure that we were going on a “couple’s” vacation this year but Sandal’s ran the 60% off promo and we got a further discount for being repeat guests so we figured what the heck. After chatting with a Sandal’s rep online we decided to go to Sandals Antigua.

We arrived on a Saturday and everything went very well. In Antigua the airplane unloads from the front and back (well with Continental from Newark anyway) so we sat in the back of the airplane and were the first ones out to the Antigua airport. This was a pleasant surprise as the people toward the front were still waiting for the cabin door to open. We were in and out of customs and at the hotel sipping champagne in an hour!! I did talk with guests there that were not so lucky when several planes arrive at the same time it took them several hours to clear customs and get to Sandals.

We decided to stay on the Mediterranean side, we don’t mind the clean new “hotel” feel and the room was absolutely beautiful!! We had the Venetian suite and being Sandals Select members we thought we would get the automatic upgrade to the Ocean suite but the property was a 100% sold out during our stay. The Venetian Suite was gorgeous though, plenty of room, deep bath tub, large shower, King bed, immaculate room and a balcony, it was a little small but the view was great and cozy for the one you love to have a couple of cocktails before dinner and dancing or whatever. It is a bit of a walk to the Caribbean side but we figured that we were burning off the extra calories from drink and food. The one down side was the house keeping, sometimes we did not get turn down service or they forgot to restock the bar or forgot the creamers for your in room coffee, little things, a quick phone call and all is well though.

If you are going to bring a laptop, highly recommended for communication back home with kids, etc… (Especially when you leave them back home in a late winter snow storm in NJ) NOTE: Bring a network cable (RJ45) the wireless is terrible. I read a previous review about the wireless internet and other couples confirmed this during our stay. Sandals does not supply you with a network cable and for about $13.00 or less a day we had very good internet connection and were able to e-mail/chat with family, send pictures and check out other things to do in Antigua - etc…

Saturday and Sunday were by far the best days and nights that we had there, between dance competitions (no one voted for us) dancing, music and karaoke there was so much! Then on Monday we kind of hit the wall at the beach bbq, food was OK, steel band OK, the company that we were seated with a bit older then us and from England which brought up the inevitable conversation concerning politics in the US and a political discussion arose, all very polite, but please I am on vacation. It seems when you get too early and mid week things settle down and get a little slower, where was the entertainment crew Tuesday night?

Being Sandal’s select members we were invited to our first “Welcome Back” dinner, which turned out to be a drawn out affair with select member awards and small sales pitch for Sandals – food was good though, the company was fun, they never stopped pouring the wine and we got bottle of rum for a gift

We did one off site excursion, the Canopy ZIP line Tour – very fun and recommended, zip lining was a blast, just make sure that you listen to your instructor in the beginning so you know when to brake before hitting a well padded tree. Also make sure that you are in good shape to handle the rope bridge challenge course at the end and then the 200’ walk up those steps to get back to where you started – Whew!!

The property was great, hanging out at the pool with “James’s” specials and nachos or hanging out at the Ocean and enjoying the sun, sand and Oh that beautiful blue water!! Do sign up for the snorkel tour it is for free and fun! If you do go to the gym, make sure you get there early before the elliptical and treadmills are taken up. Also you may want to bring a small towel from the room and your own water bottle. The cooler water there is very chlorinated and the towels for exercise do not get replenished right away.

To sum it all up we really enjoyed our vacation at Sandals Antigua. The employees were all very friendly and when the entertainment was on, it was good, when it wasn’t, then it turned into an early night. During our five night stay we had time to do some of the more physical activities and time to relax as well. We would definitely come back Antigua but not sure when as the wife is on a mission to see all of the Caribbean. Sometimes you just need to take certain things in stride, we had a GREAT TIME – do not have any reservations about not going, it is a place that you will not soon forget.

We just returned from our stay at Sandals Grande Antigua and couldn't wait to write our own review as we had so much fun reading the reviews prior to our trip. We have stayed at non-Sandals all-inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya, Mexico and in Costa Rica, and at Sandals in Whitehouse, Jamaica. We had such a wonderful time at Sandals in Jamaica that we thought nothing could ever be better, but we were proven wrong on our trip to Antigua.

We arrived on a Wednesday for a one week stay, which we would recommend if possible as the airports are less crowded, and there is no crowd for check-in and check-out. We booked the least expensive room, the Garden of Eden Deluxe, because the description at the Sandals website indicated these rooms had been newly refurbished. We were a little nervous about what our room would look like, given some of the reviews that referred to the Caribbean Grove as "the ghetto," but we decided to take a chance since we don't spend much time in the room anyway. Before we even finished our glasses of champagne that were served to us when we arrived, our check-in process was complete and we were taken to our room, which was an upgrade to a "junior suite" in the Ixoria building. We were thrilled with the room, which appeared to have been very recently renovated, and was spotless. We were pretty close to the water, and had a good view of the water and the gardens. The room had a bar and fridge that was re-stocked every day, which was very nice and un-expected, given the room that we actually booked. Housekeeping did a wonderful job of tidying up our room every day, and every evening. We walked the entire resort and would have been happy in any of the rooms on the property. The rooms on the Caribbean side are not brand new, but they are maintained well and we do not agree with other reviews that described the Caribbean side as "tired." While it is all a matter of personal preference, we are thrilled that we decided to stay on the Caribbean side, as we preferred the charm of the gardens and the smaller buildings, as opposed to the high rise hotel feel of the Med side. The Med side is of course newer, and is attractive, but just not our preference.

The grounds are very well-maintained and clean, and the staff works very hard to keep it that way. I woke up one morning at sunrise to get some pictures, and there were dozens of staff with mop buckets, scrubbing the sidewalks and preparing the grounds for another day of abuse by guests who choose to leave their glasses and trash everywhere they go. The landscaping is the prettiest I have seen of any resort we have visited.

We prefer to read and relax during the day, so I cannot comment much regarding daytime activities, but there seemed to be plenty to do if you are into that. Regarding night life, there is live entertainment every single night, and in most cases you have a choice between entertainment on the Med side and entertainment on the Caribbean side, so you can choose your preference. Don't miss the Antiguan cultural night, as this seemed to be the biggest crowd pleaser of all the entertainment. We find it very amusing that the very people who complain that there is no nightlife are the same ones who complain that they cannot sleep because of the noise from all the parties! Check the activities board at the resort and you will find there is always something going on.

The beach isn't as crowded as we thought it would be, even when cruise ships are in, but we were never able to get a chair in the shade there, as people would reserve the chairs early in the morning, and never even use them. There are many pools to choose from at the resort, but people reserved all the chairs there, too. I watched people take a dozen or so towels and put them at chairs on the beach, and at the Med pool and the Caribbean pool. This was infuriating to me, but I cannot fault Sandals for the piggish behavior of the guests. There are plenty of chairs if people wouldn't reserve chairs in multiple locations and never even use them. I wake up earlier than most and could have easily reserved chairs as well, but I refused to do so as I believe this is unbelieveably rude and selfish. You have options if you are fair-skinned as I am and you need shade. Don't do what we did on our first day, and just suck it up and lay in the sun. We ended up with severe, painful sunburns and had to avoid the sun altogether for the rest of our stay. You can remove the towels from chairs not being used, as there are many signs posted at the Med pool that indicate that reserving of chairs is not allowed. If there are personal belongings in the chairs and you do not feel comfortable removing them, you can physically move those chairs from the shaded spot, and put your chair in the shade. The pools have moveable umbrellas, so you could move the umbrella from the chair that is not being used to the spot where your chair is. On our last day, we could not find one single chair at the Med pool that wasn't reserved, and we didn't feel comfortable removing someone's belongings, so I asked a staff member what I should do. He found us a spot in the shade and removed the person's belongings for us, so that we didn't have to feel awkward about doing it, and risk a confrontation with the offender. If I could go back in time, I would have been more aggressive on our first day there, which would have saved the pain of the sunburn! It was never too hot here (I didn't even sweat, ever), so be very careful if you are fair-skinned because you do not know you are getting burnt until it is too late.

You will not go hungry here as there are so many options, we weren't even able to visit all of the restaurants. If you have one meal that isn't to your liking, there is no sense in letting it ruin your vacation as others apparently have. Just go to another restaurant and find something you do like! You may want to avoid Bayside if you don't care for cats. As with all of the resorts we have visited, there are cats that like to hang out in the outdoor restaurants. We love cats and are not bothered at all by this, and the cats do not beg or jump up on the tables. They just like to hang out there, most likely hoping for a dropped scrap of food. We never even gave it a second thought, but realized that some people may be bothered by this when we saw one guest who would jump up onto her chair and scream every time a cat got near her, and would make her husband try to scare the cats off. As another guest pointed out, we are visiting the cats' home, not the other way around. There are plenty of indoor dining options if you don't care for cats. There are more dining options at this resort than at any other resort we have visited, so we couldn't for the life of us figure out how others weren't able to find anything at all that they liked. The service was great and we never had an unreasonable wait. The staff care a great deal about whether you are enjoying your meal. Not one single meal passed without someone asking us if everything was to our liking, and if there was anything they could do to make the meal better. Garth would have done anything in his power to make our stay better if we asked, but we couldn't come up with a single thing we would change.

You will not got thirsty here, either. Whether it's water, soda, or alcohol, you will get whatever you want, and there is never a long wait. Regarding allegations of "watered down" drinks, we saw no evidence of that, whatsoever. Service was great at every bar, but we especially liked Latoya at the Caribbean pool. It can't be easy to deal with people over-indulging in alcohol (I'm guilty!) day in and day out, yet she does it with a smile, consistently.

It isn't just the staff at the bars and restaurants that can't be beat. You will find this is the case at the entire resort. We were greeted very warmly by every staff member in passing as we walked around the resort, and some even stopped to ask us how our stay was, and wanted to know if they could do anything to improve our stay. They were genuine and sincere, and truly wanted to ensure we experienced paradise. Jesse, a playmaker, even came to say goodbye to us, and made us feel like we were longtime friends.

It is almost impossible to choose a favorite between Sandals Whitehouse and Sandals Antigua and you cannot go wrong with either, but we felt that Antigua had a slight lead over Whitehouse, because the staff try so very hard, and we love the charm of the Caribbean Grove. That is not to say there is anything wrong with Whitehouse, but for some unknown reason, Sandals Antigua is the "underdog" in the reviews, so they try that much harder to make sure you go home knowing that you had a piece of paradise while you were there. In our case they definitely succeeded, and if you are a reasonable person, you will likely feel the same way when you visit. Our only dilemma now is figuring out which Sandals we want to visit next!!!

I have no complaints on Sandals in Antigua. You can't go wrong with a place that allows you to drink all you want, eat all you want and enjoy paradise at a more than a reasonable price.

Reasons to go:

1. All-Inclusive
2. Brand new
3. Excellent restaurants
4. Water sports are included except horseback riding and jetskiing.
5. Casino on site
6.Beautiful rooms
7. Easy to get chairs at the beach anytime of the day. The pool is packed, then again who wants to lay out at the pool when you're on vacation?
8. No children, 21 yr age minimum
9. Romantic
10. Great staff

First of all let me say that the hotel is perfect for the lazy get-away that we planned. The weather in February is excellent with full on sun most days and the temperature never falling below 25C. There are loads of pools kept at a sensible temperature although the hot tubs that accompany them are (and I never thought I'd say this) too hot at 40C. They seemed hotter than I would expect a bath to be in the UK!

However, The whole experience was let down (for me) due to the intermittant nature of the advertised WiFi internet access. First of all it appears to be pot luck as to whether you can pick up a signal in your room. There are ethernet ports in some rooms too - but they cannot supply an ethernet cable. Throughout my week the connection was sometimes there and somertimes not. Very frustrating as I needed to keep in touch with bookings for my Guest House business and to top it all there was a death in the family which required considerable communication to sort out (never mind my Son's birthday). The cost per day is $13 but you can pay for the week ($38) which would be sensible if you actually get that. I will be expecting a refund due to the poor service in that area.

This is the second visit to Antigua and the previous visit saw us hire a car and tour around. To be blunt there is not really a lot to see (although English Harbour is worth a visit) and the occasional day trip, which can be booked from the desk in the foyer, is a more sensible option. There is a daily service to St John's which costs $10 per head, but we found that you could get a taxi for the same price and not be restricted to the published timetable.

Sandals is definately a wedding venue and I belive that you can almost guarantee a great time. The staff seemed vey polite although they seemed to work to Antigua time which is very laid back - no rush for anything.

We had a very relaxing week (couples only - no kids) and standfast the internet fiasco was just what we wanted.

I had my wedding on the beach of Dickenson's Bay in July of 2008. I will review the resort ..then I will get to the wedding. This will be long as I know it these reviews helped me make my decision on where to vacation. I think one should know the background of the person making the review. ...so My husband and I are in our early 30's, we both decided on sandals because of the amenities and the romantic setting.

Check In - We got to the hotel about an hour and half after our plane arrived. Pretty quick. But we had a private transfer so im not sure if that made the dif. We were greated with cold handtowels and champagne. They gave us an automatic upgrade..to an oceanview room..that was right on! Our room wasnt ready though, ..it was quite tiring to have to wait around for our room which took about 2 hours. We grabbed something to eat while we were waiting..so it wasnt so bad.

Room - We stayed on the Mediterranean village side. Monte Carlo room...basically exactly as you see in the pics. VERY Small though! And a very small balcony. Nice jet tub and nice shower..only drawback..the tiny toilet area. Our fridge was restocked everyday. The room was cleaned everyday by the time we came back from lunch..sometimes breakfast. Werent allowed to run the AC while you were gone..they have that hotel card slide system..but it didnt make much dif..the room cooled pretty fast.

Resort Grounds - AMAZING! BEAUTIFUL! The whole resort is just gorgeous. We spent most of our time on the Mediterranean village side. The pool there is great..cool and the poolbar service was great...when i was served by a male bartender(will get to that later)
There was a slight problem getting pool side chairs each day. We went out to save one before breakfast one day..and it was taken..regardless that we had out towels and a book on it. Not impressed with that. BUT we made the most of it..and had a blast sitting at the pool bar socializing with other couples. No problem at all on the beach to get chairs...but to get the beach chairs with shade...you did have to grab it by 8 - 8 30 am. The caribbean side is really just that a real caribbean feel. Gorgeous gardens! Lots of lil places to be alone with your hunny. There is a more quiet pool on the caribbean side...we never sat there though.

Service - The first 2 days was GREAT service BY ALL! We didnt wait long for drinks..or to be seated anywhere. Although I noticed by the second day the woman staff had taken a fancy to my fiancee. I didnt mind..and in fact at first I felt flattered by this. They would come up to us asking if he was in movies..or if he was a football player. The third day was when it started(the day before my wedding) We were trying to get info on making dinner reservations and I had stopped a female staff member and asked her if she knew where we could do that. She answered my fiancee looked at him only and rubbed his back as she told us where to make the reservations. I was put off by this right away. Isnt this a couples resort??? Isnt this the most romantic resort in the world??? I kept it to myself til we got back to our room. We decided maybe we were overreacting to that. BUT by the end of the day...we realized we really werent. We went to the gift shop later that day. The woman in the gift shop proceeded to pant over my fiancee..askin us the usual "are you a celebrity" question. Which he would always humbly say no. This time they said he looked like a porn star...A PORN STAR?? I was quite shocked by that statement..and my fiancee quickly got our things ran up and we left for our dinner reservations. Dinner was great..but the constant schoolgirl panting each time they came to ask HIM..not me..if he needed anything was gettin out of hand. I went to the washroom...and met up with a few female staff members. I took it upon myself to tell them that I was feeling kind of disrespected and that I didnt want to complain and put anyones job at risk BUT if it continued I would definately say something..and to pass that along to the ones that were really making my stay bad. The next night at dinner..i was heckled by 4 female staff members standing at the salad bar in the tex mex restaurant. It was at this point I complained to the manager. The last 3 days of our vaca..it took at least 15 minutes before I would get served a drink..but my husband would go get us drinks..and be back within 5. The day we left was the only day the manager addressed our issue...like an hour before we left. The manager couldnt do anything for us as I did not know the names of the small group of women that gave us a hard time. I didnt want to be wrong and give the wrong name...so I only gave one. We werent even given an apology for my honeymoon being spent fending off the staff from my husband. I come on! I even had our wedding coordinator rub my fiances back while talkin to him IN FRONT of me...as if i wasnt even there!! I dont know if this a thing for antiguan women but i seriously was upset by this. Another bartender(McCoy) tried to make us feel better by telling us that the ratio of woman to men in antigua is like 4 :1 and ...like it matters :S

Activities, Entertainment & Nightlife - We absolutely LOVED ZIGGY! He went out of his way to make our stay that much more pleasureable The first 2 days was we had great entertainment..great show on the beach. Great beach barbeque! I think they only had 3 live shows during our 8 day stay though. Entertainment during the day was mediocre. BUt the staff didnt make you feel compelled to join in. It really lacked after Ziggy mysteriously(entertainment head) left the resort. The main bar closes at like 11...from which everyone goes to Crickets..but there is no music.and its basically a pub style setting BUT They serve snacks til 2. ..TIP* order 3 orders of chicken wings as one portion is only 4 wings! George our fav bartender alwaysmade us feel right at home there.

Beach - the beach was honestly one of the most beautiful i have seen. Calm waters, clear turquoise water. No rocks. Not many children around(as it is a public beach)...very relaxing. The locals werent rude..and accepted "no thank you" We took advantage of the water sports..kayaking..and the hobie cats. No time limits to how long you can take it out..first come first serve basis.

Food - Food was mediocre. The breakfast I enjoyed the most. Made to order omelets were Right on! Breakfast selection was right on as well. The lunch buffets were ok. Bayside was ok..i liked most of what was on the menu. It was very fast service there as well. Hard time making dinner reservations..have to do it the first day or you wont get a dinner reservations. Hopefully they have changed this system.

Wedding - Many locations to pick from. I warn any of you gettin married...the beach is public! The second day there..we had to register. This process took from 9 am til lunch. Not to bad. We got to meet other couples so we really didnt mind. After lunch we went back to discuss details of the wedding. That all went smoothly.

The day of the wedding - We choose a twilight wedding on the beach. My husband went down to the wedding headquarters(next floor down from us) about 45 minutes before the wedding. 15 minutes later my dressing assistant called...she was running late and would be there soon. She came..she was soo helpful! We went to get a golf cart to escort me to the wedding location..none to be had..we waited for like 20 minutes until we couldnt wait anymore..making me late for my SUNSET wedding. From that moment on..It was rushed. I had time for one pic to be snapped before i walked down the isle. The ambiance was great though I must admit...as i arrived..the steel drum band was playing. OUr ceremony was wonderful..the officiant had used such romantic lovely words. The one thing that went terrbily wrong was the locals on the beach. They started playing a reggae song as loud as their ghetto blaster would play...and lets just say..it was not an appropiate song to be played while a wedding is going on. This was not just a problem with us( another couple we met..and attended there beach wedding has locals yell and holler while they were saying their vows..it wasnt pretty) Right after our ceremony...we went to take pics as the sun was quickly setting. The time we lost due to waiting for our cab..took time out of our wedding photoshot. It was almost dark by the time we had our first dance. It felt totally rushed along as we basically only had a 5 minute reception because dusk was approaching fast. The wedding video was really good quality. The only thing is they couldnt edit out the dancehall reggae song in the background :S We got back to our room and our dressing assistant had apologized that she didnt have time to decorate our room as they usually do cause things were running so late. She proceeded to throw rose petals on our bed and give us our free gifts (tshirt and flipflops) I really would have liked to come back to see that romantic setting instead of her doing it as fast as she could while being apologetic. The whole thing just felt rushed. Wonderful, gorgeous setting but rushed.

Overall - I would not recommend this resort for beach weddings!! Choose the garden setting..trust me!! Its much more private and no chance of being heckled while saying your vows. Other then the problem I had with some of the female staff...the service was great. Everything was just as expected. BUT I dont think its worth 5000( lol i know its bad etiquette to say how much you paid) however i really do think you can get the same value at another resort.

Travelled to Sandals Antigua from Toronto Canada on Air Canada Feb 8-Feb 15/09
Check in at Toronto airport Air Canada counter very slow and backed up 1 14 hrs only to not to have pre booked seats. No anywhere close to other couple we were travelling with.
Great flight
Arrival at airport in Antigua fairly smooth, one other plane also arrived thru in 1 hr.
Only 20 min drive to Sandals from airport taxis are split up by side of resort you are staying on and upon arrival we had done the online check in before arrival so signed check in slip, warm towel and glass of champange and off to our Venetian Room Med side of resort.
Room was incredible and so was the view. We were on the 3rd floor. Beautiful poster bed, plasma tv, well stocked bar and fridge, nice patio, incredible bathroom, very comfortable!!!!!
Excellent maid service everyday everything replenished daily.
Resort is beautiful, grounds are very well looked after.
During our week stay we could not say enough about the staff and service provided to us. We never met anyone working on this resort that was not happy to help you with anything. No request was a problem!!!
The chair issue at the pool does happen to some, but we are early risers (6am) so we would drop our beach bag at 7:15am and go to breakfast and then back to the pool by 8. Yes a lot of people put their stuff on the chairs and then disappear for the day which we also think is not right. the pool is beautiful and does no feel crowded nor does the resort. We were there the week of Valentines Day and the resort was full, but never felt so.
No problem getting reservations at any time. Made it to try all but the Ok Coral for meals, all were of excellent atmosphere, food quality and service with always a smile!!!

CV side also has its own charm and is beautiful as well

Beach was beautiful and was only busy a couple of days Tue & Thur with cruise ship passengers but not crazy still lots of room to do what ever. No vendors ever bothered us and we approached them if interested. Sandals property at the beach has security at every entrance so that people cannot just wander on to the property.

We travelled to Nelsons Dockyards and Shirley Heights (our driver was great) , and did the Elis Eco Tour. Both were excellent and took many beautiful pictures!!!!

Weather was very nice with only a bit of rain nothing to spoil any day
Departure from Antigua was a little slow as mentioned by others, as they go thru your luggage by hand so don't lock until after they search your stuff ( no big one). Departing lounge a little slow if airport busy but we were able to get seats.

Loved every minute of this trip and would highly recommed the island and property to everyone.
