This is my second time visiting this resort. This time I stayed four nights in May 2013, just after the season ended. I thought I was the only guest in this huge hotel, but noticed some business people staying, also two couples. During the dinner I had a chance to talk one gentleman from US. During our conversation I noted that he is also returning customer. "Nice, clean, property, safe and secure, the only shame, that not many people stay in this hotel..."he was saying, and I agreed. Next night the conference hall of this hotel was rented out, and this hotel suddenly was converted into beehive. I hanged there after my dinner, the conference hall was full of music and packed with dancing young people....there were more than 300 in total... the atmosphere was very friendly, people at the door allowed me to enter to the function, and dance with them....
Next morning I had an improtant meeting , so I didn't stay long, but I was really surprised, to see this quiet hotel as a busy place.

Room Tip: I stayed on 8th floor room with panoramic beautiful view into Deep Bay. In the evening is nice to co...

I only went to deep bay beach from a cruise ship for the day. I did not stay at this hotel. I am so glad too. It looked like a movie set of an abandoned hotel. The stucco cracking and rusting and paint chipping, bars unstaffed, bird poop everywhere. $10 for a hamburger at a ecoli beach bar.

the beach was beautiful. Sandy bottom with some kelp beds in the middle. Only tiny waves sheltered from the open ocean. Beautiful clear blue waters. There was no reef or fish to see. However, we did see 2 giant starfish.

Very relaxing. We took a cab there for about $15. 10 minute ride. Cab driver wanted to talk us into a more crowded beach. We liked the idea of seclusion. If you stayed by the resort, there were more people, but a local told us if we walked down to the other end, there was some trouble with locals stealing tourists backpacks from the brush behind the beach. So we picked a spot right in the middle. there was no shade.

We rented an umbrella and 2 chairs for the day from a vendor for $15. He wanted to charge $20 to begin with.

Good thing, cause the sun got very hot.

In the middle of the day, we hiked up to fort barrington where there are wild goats and lots of little goat turds everywhere. It was an easy and quick hike, but you did have to traverse some large boulders a bit.

It was a wonderful day.

FYI for about 1 hour, there were 2 catamaran excursions from the cruise ship that stopped there, so you can get to this beach via taxi or via cruise ship excursion. taxi a much less expensive option, catamaran, much more exotic option.

And forget your peace and quite while the catamarans are moored there. Not only are the cruise ship people from the cat loud and abnoxious, the local vendors with seashell jewelry won't leave them/you alone.

Room Tip: I do not recommend staying at this hotel. It looked dirty and run down from what little we could se...

Be advised not to bring a date you might want to impress to the Grand Royal Antiguan. Matter of fact, I would be afraid to bring just about anyone here, unless they are joining the witness protection program and want to be completely anonymous. Like the other reviews said, it is absolutely void of guests - height of season and this almost 300 room hotel has 12 guests...that should tell you something. Whle the staff may "try" it is impossible to create something from nothing - every inch of this place is rusty or broken, or both.. When walking through the hallways and lobby, generally all the public areas, one feels as if the world has ended and you are the last person left on earth. The feeling of being the only guests in a run-down and unsecure hotel is frightening enough that after one night my wife said either we check into another hotel - ANY other hotel - or she was leaving the island. But, hey, the beach is nice!

Room Tip: The best room here is the room where you wait for the taxi to take you AWAY from this hotel!

We stayed at this hotel as nearby Coconut Beach had overbooked for our one night stay.

The hotel was deserted. We stayed on the eight floor, somewhat difficult to get to as the nearest elevator was not working. The hotel was tired and desperate need of either a makeover or demolition. It was eerily quiet. I had sympathy for the staff. Time must travel very slowly here.

The swimming pool with bar had a frog.

The hotel was so quiet I felt like Jack Nicholson in the latter stages of The Shining. Thankfully, I am reassured that the Grand Royal was not built on an ancient Indian burial ground.

I would strongly encourage people not to book into the hotel until the owners have injected much needed investment into this shell of a hotel. Please to not be fooled by the pictures on the website.

The staff is not very friendly. They act as if you are bothering them if you just ask a simple question. They have no concept of the term "customer service". The food here is poor to fair at best. They all sit or lay around and if you walk up for lunch they saunter over with a "I can't believe I actually have to do something" attitude. This is the worst island attitude I have ever seen. I would recommend thorough research before booking in Antigua. The St James Club is nice but a bit pricy. Great beach though! We are a corporate flight crew, not inexperienced travelers.

Just returned from and amazing week at this hotel.
Extremely quiet, but a great get away from everything.
For some reason hardly anybody staying in the hotel.
The staff were friendly and welcoming.
The food was limited but something for everyone.
The French Toast at breakfast was to die for.
The place is well maintained, pool is lovely and the beach and water couldn't be any better.
While there were few people they did provide some evening entertainment during some dinners.
Would love to go back next year.

Room Tip: Ask for a lagoon/ocean view room on the 7th or 8th floor.

Okay...don't want to sound bad but there isn't much to say about this resort other than the beach is excellent, the staff are incredible and the food is good but the property is in dire need of repair.
The web makes it sound like a dream with all the amenities, reality is that if you want a resort with no people, absolutely quiet, run down but the rooms are passable (room 803) and you are only going to tour, sleep, read and lay on the beach wanting to do nothing else then okay but you will still over pay for it. There are two resturants, the Andes Waterfront, evening bbq's and lunch. The same menu every day. The breakfast resturant (by hotel lobby) unless there are more people you will order off the menu, same one every day....no buffet. We only had it twice. Total occupancy week of March 10th- 25!! Went down to 12 by mid week. They say they have a fine dining resturant "the Barrington" which is just a conference room on the second floor with no decor to speak. The food is good, the desserts so so! The variety doesn't change much. There is NO ENTERTAINMENT.....NO USEABLE TENNIS COURT, NOT MUCH IN WATERSPORTS (two sea kayaks, bad life jackets), NO CHILDREN ACTIVITIES, NO CHILDREN PLAYGROUND without goats! It's pretty much in ruin. Its like staying in a ghost town. Free Wifi, works great in the lobby, limited in the rooms and not at all on the beach. The pool is clean and nice the umbrellas are mostly broken. There are no shops at all! There is a wieght center, never used it so I'm not sure the equipment works. No electronic casino. No shops at all. No snacks available during the day but if you ask for something they will get you something. There are beach vendors who are very nice and they don't bother you if you tell them "thank you -no". It is very over priced for what you will get. The TV reception is good, safe in the room, refridgerator if you ask for one. Iron and ironing board. It's dying a slow death and is a pitty because it could be a great resort.
