Reviewed 20 April 2014

We needed just one night's accommodation on the lovely island of Antigua, most places expect a minimum of 3, so we were happy to book Anchorage Inn. We had read recent reviews of the inn and how it had improved since the arrival of the new manager. On our arrival we were met with cool flannels and a bottle of water, excellent start, and then taken to our superior
room which had a small balcony overlooking the pool. The furniture was of the shabby chic variety, without meaning to be so! A lovely big, comfortable bed but with only one bedside table: always very frustrating, where am I supposed to put my glasses and book? Essentially everything was basic but clean. Unfortunately we were unable to use the balcony, which we would have liked to do, as the air conditioning unit was sited there making it too noisy and hot from the exhaust. We wandered down to the pool, where we felt strongly that someone needs to check out the poolside furniture. Much of it needed repair or cleaning, and many tiles appeared to be missing from the pool. We decided to eat at their restaurant as we were tired after our long flight. However it seemed that the chef had not bothered turning up to work, with the excuse that his phone was "mashed up". I must say the other staff that we encountered (no sign of the manager) were helpful and friendly. Eventually we got a taxi to a nearby restaurant. Fortunately the waitress cooked an excellent breakfast the following morning. Still no chef.
We have been visiting the Caribbean for many years now and were happy enough that we had got what we paid for, but had we been first time visitors would have been very disheartened. Caribbean accommodation is very expensive compared to many places. There is a lot of potential here, but sadly still a long way to go.

Room Tip: We had a superior room. Not sure what you get in a basic room!

Thank you for taking the time to write your honest review and we are grateful for your comments. I am glad the hotel is improving since my arrival and you have my word that will continue! It was most unfortuneate that our chef experienced a serious health issue during your stay, and the pool was in need of maintenance. We are addressing these issues and are confident that major improvements are coming! We are very proud of the guest services our staff provide and they will continue to be as friendly and helpful as they can, and I am always at hand to meet any of our valued guests!

I needed a room for my friend and contacted the hotel five to six hours before he arrived. I spoke with Shirmain who was exceptionally friendly, professional, customer-centric and personable. Shirmain personally made arrangements for the taxi to take my friend to and from the airport, and even contacted me to find out if my friend had made it home to Dominica safely. Wow! This is one fabulous experience that my friend and I will talk about for a very long time. Way to go, Anchorage Inn. We say 'Thank you!'.

Room Tip: Always be courteous to the person (s) that you speak with. You never know who's on the other end...

I stayed overnight at the Anchorage Inn and the place was absolutely charming. The room was spotless, comfortable with a friendly staff. I would recommend this for an overnight or for a few days as it really has island charm.

I've been all around the world and I always manage to stay in places like this one.
Clean, affordable and very friendly staff.
They also offer cable with ESPN and a few of the big American cable networks (HBO, Showtime etc)

You are less than a 2 minute drive from the beach or best casino in Antigua.
Nikki and the front desk staff are amazing!

Will visit again!

So glad you enjoyed your stay at the Anchorage Inn! We look forward to welcoming you back!! As the newly installed Manager, I am very proud of the service offered by our cheerful and dedicated staff! The new restaurant has introduced some very tasy and affordable new dishes for lunch and dinner, very much in tune with our informal hotel. I think we are the best value accomodation in the Dickenson Bay area now!

We felt sorry for Louise, who had been left to welcome us to the Anchorage Inn, where we were scheduled to stay 20 nights. She tried to make the best of the dire facilities. The rooms are dingy, grubby with broken tiles and taps hanging off the walls. The cooking facilities are rusty and inadequate. A/C units sit on balconies in rusty, dirty puddles, with the effluent running down the outside walls. The pool would have been dangerous to use - the tiles were either broken or missing and the water supply to the pool was coming through a dirty broken inlet. With only 2 opened and half empty bottles of wine on offer and a broken corkscrew to open the one and only unopened bottle of wine that Louise could find, we made our decision very quickly to leave immediately. The depressing story has however a happy end - we were rescued by wonderful Barry Oliver of Barry's Tours who took us to Villas at Sunset Lane - from hell to heaven in a couple of hundred yards (please read our separate review of Villas at Sunset Lane)

Room Tip: There is isn't one here - apparently we were shown the best room.

I am so sorry you did not like your first impression of the Anchorage Inn, but happy you enjoyed the Villas at Sunset Lane. There is always the right place to stay in Antigua for everyone. The hotel was full at the time, and the other guests were happy with their rooms, and we have a comprehensive program for maintenance. The location is great - five minutes from Dickenson Bay, and ten minutes from St John's city.

I stayed for 1 night on my way home from BVI's, the staff were all very friendly and helpful and the accomodation clean and comfortable. It was very quiet so the dining room was only open for breakfast, which was very good. There is a very good supermarket just 5 mins walk away.
