We were fortunate to book this hotel. We were inititially attracted by its location versus its price, obviously considering that we are talking about a Renaissance hotel that is not the cheapest one. The hotel is just gorgeous, its location is rather close to the airport, straight close to the shopping area of Aruba where all good stores are located. When you check-in the reception gives you a descount book for most of the best places (restaurant/ stores/ attractions) in town. As this unit is not located straight at the beach, they just acquired an island!!!! Unbelievably wonderful! Only hotel guests can take a boat on the ground floor straight to the island and enjoy this piece of paradise. The island has unique beauty with lots of friendly small lizards and flamingos around. Good restaurant service and gym on the island. When back to Aruba we will definitely stay there again!

Room Tip: Avoid to accept an internal view room when checking-in. It might be noisy at night.

I am a travel agent that recently stayed in the Marina Section (adult only). The rooms are basic and bathrooms are not up to Renaissance standards, however renos scheduled to begin in April 2013 will make the rooms great. So basically if you don't spend a lot of time in your room, this property is great. The staff were always smiling and very helpful. Lots of food choice and good quality. We were on the all inclusive package. Since some guests aren't on the all inclusive package you have to give your room key every time you order something and they charge it to your room. If you are registered as all inclusive the cost comes up as 0 on your bill when you check out. It gets to be a little tedious giving your key and signing every time you want something. Most of the restaurants are a la carte so you can't just walk in and grab something on the go. We still tipped extra at every meal/drink order. Our room looked out over the street. Didn't hear any noise at night. Beds are comfortable. Some rooms look into the atrium. So again not the ideal choice for those who like to hang out in your room. The balconies are french style, so you can't sit out on them. Only room to stand.
The rooms at the Ocean Suites (across the street) are large. All units are 1 bedroom with an additional pull out sofa bed in the livingroom. Small kitchenette. These rooms have balconies you can sit on. Some look out over the ocean/pool and some are gardenview and look out over the Marketplace next door. Not much entertainment at night. Usually a band playing at the marketplace next door free. Wi fi is free in the lobby of both hotels, but you need your own laptop or mobile device. Excellent fitness facility and spa. There is a golf cart that takes you between the two hotels, but it's only a few minutes walk. You can use the restaurants and pools at both resorts, however the Marina pool is adult only.
The private island is what sells this place. You take a boat launch that runs every 15 - 20 min. Only about 5 min transfer to the island in calm waters. Island has adult side and family side. Ocean is enclosed with rock wall, so its good for swimming and you can rent a floating raft for $5/day. Snorkel gear also available to rent. Some seaweed in water, but basically sandy bottom. Few rocks/coral/shells in some spots. I brought my water shoes but never wore them. Restaurant on the island. 7 flamingos roam the adult section and several large iguanas can be found throughout the island. Bring bug spray if you want to walk the mangrove walk or you will be eaten alive by mosquitoes. Airport is next door, so you do get a dozen planes coming in in the afternoon, but it was more of a spectacle to watch than a hindrance.
Lots of shopping close by and you can catch a bus (block away) to go down to the high rise section. It's very busy down in the highrise section, so if you are looking for tranquility, the Renaissance Island is a better choice. You can always take the bus and go down to the high rise section for a visit. If you are looking for jewellery... Tesh at Kay's jeweller's (block away near bus terminal) gave great deals and great customer service.

Room Tip: Ask for an outside facing room or you may be looking into the atrium/lobby.

So we have been coming here for the last 4 years- not much has changed except some age of the hotel- overall- I would say I don't spend any time in the room except to use the restroom and sleep so in all despite slightly dated who cares- the rest of the facility- pool with bar- 3 decent resturants and most of all-A PRIVATE ISLAND- one side for adults and the other for families - the family side hosts a bar and grill- beach style- of course a tennis court and a blocked off beach with ability to snorkel. There is dedicated boats which leave every 15 min from either the adult or family renissance-
Food: Aquarius- at the adult hotel which devotes itself to seafood more so than anything else- fresh cooked in front if you as we'll as salad, sushi, and dinner buffet- decent selection of foo or order by menu!
Steak house- a bit more upper class like with dress code but most of the Anericans with no edicate show up in shorts- food is lovely and the tomatoe soup rocks! I love to get the steak but wife has ordered other things and was happy- service is very good.

Sole and captains corner: firstly - captains corner hosts breakfast every day and is the same food every day but I am here to relax and not cook so why should I complain. At night it hosts 4 different themes they the week- Italian, Caribbean cook out- around the world an one more but I forgot what it was-
Sole- is the bar/ poolside food- not bad- good selection- I thought the chicken sandwich was tasty- the bartenders are funny, pleasant an can make pretty almost anything you can think of plus more, like magic tricks with drinks - poolside stools and weather can't compare-
We were all inclusive and didn't pay for anything except some small rentals on the island or pool- floats or snorkeling- 5 and 15 bucks for day
The private island- I will make this short- it's where you have to start your day- then finish at the poolside bar and then go to dinner-
Trust me if you have kids or despise fighting for places at the beach- it's the place to be!

My husband and I stayed at the hotel for 7 nights. It had a lot of good qualities. The boat to the private island from the lobby, the boat drivers, the private island, the restaurant on the island, the service on the island, the lizards and wildlife on the island, the pool and the maid service. The downside, the musty smell, the wifi, the food was boring, the bathrooms were small the rooms were ok but the beds were not comfy at all. The bar was overpriced and the cups were 6oz but started out much larger at the beginning of the week. If we ever returned to Aruba, we would choose another hotel. This hotel is the closest to the airport with all the other ones being on the other side of the island. Management was always in view but did not interact with the guest and I was with a group of 300. On an upside we had a banquet on the last day and the food was awesome and that is difficult when feeding 300 people. Great job with both dinner and dessert.

I stayed at the Renaissance nearly two years ago (great resort, loved every minute of it!) and have since relocated to Aruba. I too was confused by the mysterious 15% that showed up on every check and ASSUMED this was an included tip. I have since learned this is not the case! Though every resort handles this surcharge differently (and somedon't use it at all) the Renaissance allocates PART of this charge to the servers and bartenders - less than 5% I have been told. The rest of the charge goes to hotel overhead. In this way, the major part of the server and bartender salaries varies based on sales at the hotel since their base salary is extermely low (between $3 and $5 per hour...) and the service charge is then divided among those employees based on number of hours worked and other factors.

In my opinion, the Renaissance should just raise food and beverage prices by 15% to eliminate the confusion of the service charge since tips really are not a part of that fee. That service charge is a part of the employee base salary and tips are definitely not included. FYI and happy vacationing!

I stayed her with my wife and 8mo old baby for a wedding before transferring to the Marriott Ocean Club in Palm Beach. The best part about this resort is it location in downtown. Apart from that everything else was just mediocre.

First off, you might get confused upon arrival because there are actually two locations for this one resort. You have the "family building" which is located on the water, and then you have the "adult building" which is one block over and across the street in front of the marina. When staying in the Renaissance you can use the facilities in both. The gym and breakfast is in the marina building which is a good block away every morning. To get to the family building ,which is impossible to see from the street, you have to drive into the marina parking lot and turn down a driveway which will lead you behind the shopping center where the building is.

The beach on the resort and on the private island are not real beaches, more like man made pools of see water. The pool which is not that big, does not really make up for the beach.

It seems to be the best resort in Oranjestad. Apparently Downtown Oranjestad was the happening place to be 10 years ago. Since the high rise hotels where built in Palm Beach all the tourism, attractions, and shops transferred to Palm Beach in the last 5 years. Having been to both I would definitely just stay in Palm Beach and take a drive to down town just for the day. Down town is a ghost town at night and even during the day until a cruise ship comes in. When the a ship comes in the area is full of life. Although one of best restaurants we ate at was in Oranjestad and is called Gustoso. Asked the locals how to get there because its pretty tricky to find.

This was one of the finest vacations the wife and I have taken in a long while and we have traveled around the world. It was our first time in Aruba so we did not know what to expect. As we learned while there, the Renassaince Aruba Resort and Casino is an older hotel that has recently been remodeled and refreshed. They did a wonderful job! We stayed in the Marina side. The rooms are spacious even with a King size bed. They provide a sitting chair as well as a desk with a lamp and chair. All outlets are american so recharging your devices is no hassle. The chest of drawers is huge. Big enough for everything in your and your spouses large suitcase. As well, the closet has hangers and a lot of room for all the hanging clothes you bring. There is also a safe for your valuables in the closet. The rooms are clean .....very clean, including the bathrooms. (Yes the bathtub is old, but there was no mold or mildew anywhere and they are good cast iron tubs.) If I had to make a complaint it would be about the toilets which are not ADA approved high toilets, otherwise the rooms are more than adaquate. The hotel itself is very nice. They have a group of water taxi's which take you every fifteen minutes to Renassaince Island, a private island exclusive to those staying at the resort. The boats arrive in the lower lobby of the hotel and you'll need your key card to get on. The private island is nothing short of a paradise in paradise. Two seperate beaches; one for the adults and one for families are very nice. It is never difficult to find a chair or shade should you desire. There are jetty's surrounding the swimming areas that allow ocean water in but not the waves and they do not detract from the view. They have staff walking around taking drink and food orders but they are not pushy. There is an open air restaurant on the family side and the prices are reasonable for a vacation of this caliber. The hotel has several restaurants, the Aquarius, L.G. Smith's Steak house etc., as well as a casino, a theater, the BluE bar in the lobby and a high end Mall downstairs. There is an "endless" pool on the pool deck above the lobby with seating all around. There is easy access to local boardwalk style shopping as well as grocery stores for those items you would like in your room. Just ask at the concierge desk and they will be happy to help. As well, the Renassaince Market Place is just in between the Marina and Ocean Suites parts of the hotel. There, you will find wonderful outside cafes and restaurants with entertainment at the rear every evening. All the staff, from the concierge down to the guy vacuuming the rugs are very nice and will have a "good day" for all that pass. Having worked in the service industry for 27 years, I have never seen the level of customer service shown by their staff as I found here at the Renassaince Aruba. Go, Relax, Have fun on their One Happy Island.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking either the boat dock in the lobby or the bay area.
