“Very Relaxing Stay”
Reviewed 28 October 2010

We got a room in the renaissance through a time share exchange, so I cannot comment on the price. i like this hotel. First, the website of this hotel is not really clear the set up. There are actually 2 different buildings about 2 blocks away from each other. One is at the waterfront next to the casino. It is mainly for families. The other building is right in downtown and is for couples. It is behind the main road but you still can get ocean view.

We stayed in the the 'family" building. The check in was nice and quick. The room is actually a suite with decent size and clean. It has a small ktichen with stove. The swimming pool is nice and big. There is also a man-made beach at the hotel but the water is not that good. It is a good place to watch the sunset though.

The "couple" building looks nicer than the other one. There is a dock right inside the lobby area. The jellyfish behind the reception makes it look high class. I heard that the rooms are small though. The dock is for the complimentary water taxi going to the private island.

This private island is tremendous. The taxi ride is about 10 minutes long. The island is beautiful. It has 2 beaches; one for couples and the other for families. There is a ship wreck just outside of the "couple" beach. But the current is strong. You need too be a strong swimmer to snorkel there. The water at the beaches is calm as bath tub. The 'couple beaches has a few flamingoes wander around and there are iguana everywhere. Both kinds of animals are mild and they make the island so much more exotic.

There are a few good restaurants right next to the hotel. They are trendy with good food. you. Since the hotel is close to the downtown, you can walk around the downtown area and it is quite relaxing. If you are on budget. You can get grocery from the supermarket in the town to make lunch in the hotel room.

Although, it is away from the main hotel areas, the private island suit us well 'cos my wife does not like being in a crowd. The private island is perfect for her.

I would recommend renting a car and drive around the island for a day or 2. There are lots of stuff to see around the island.

The Renaissance is actually two distinct hotels - Ocean Suites and Marina where the distinguishing factor is that the Marina is adults only. The Ocean Suites is primarily timeshares (3 of the 5 floors are timeshares) and as such I feel the service and upkeep of the hotel is below what I would normally expect from a Renaissance property.

There were various problems with our room (no cold water, the bathtub drain wasnt working, etc.) and it would take multiple calls to get maintanance to try and fix them and ultimately they either wouldn't come to the room or the "fix" would be short lived. Housekeeping would forget to empty the trash and we would call for that as well and it wouldnt be taken care of. Wen we checked out the room charges were wrong and I was told to come back to see the supervisor and ultimately they were not there each time so it was overall a very disappointing Marriott experience.

I am a low tier Elite member which doesnt mean much but I still would have expected a much better Marriott experience.

We stayed here for the first couple days of our honeymoon. The private island alone was worth staying here, we took a private speed boat to an uncrowded island for the day. Drinks were rather expensive as was food but both were of acceptable quality.

Our room was very nice with a great view of the ocean and the town. The room was well cleaned and the bed comfortable. My only complaint was the food, we ordered appetizers at the bar that were overpriced, very small portions and very average quality.

My husband are from Toronto Canada and we travelled to Renaissance (Marina - adult side) from Oct 16th to 23rd and have read the reviews both positive and negative, and we have to say that Renaissance was great, and good location - 8 minute ride from the airport. We did the all-inclusive package and it was worth it. There are two casinos: one on the family side (by the Marina) and the other on the adult side. We ate at LG Steakhouse 4 nights and the surf and turf was excellent every time. Moreover the buffet at Aquarias was great, we had all you can eat lobster and crab. If you are not into seafood, there was other selections as well, which were excellent. The bar and grill on the private island was fantastic, we had lunch there every day. The private island is excellent, the family side was the best, there were no rocks and was great for snorkelling or just relaxing on the beach. On the private island you receive a bucket of beer full of ice and you can go back as much as you want. There was iguanas and flamingos on the private island, which pretty much kept to themselves and allowed you to get close with the camera. The boat ride was about 8 minutes. We will be booking another trip to Aruba and we plan to stay at the Renaissance again. The weather was excellent, bring your sun screen because it's hot!! It rained one day for 10 minutes and then it was clear (and that was suppose to be the rainy season). For you ladies who like to shop, underneath the hotel there is a mall that have high-end brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Furla, etc where you can find some great pieces - I found a great clutch there! There are 60 stores in total. My husband and I have been to the Caribbean before but this has exceeded all expectations. If you are looking to book this place, don't hesitate, just do it!!!!

We vacationed from July 3 to the 17th, all-inclusive. We arrived in the evening and ate at L.G. Smith's Steak & Chop House Steakhouse. The food was very tasty and cooked to our liking. Every morning we went to the gym at 6 am (adult part of the two hotels). It was a great, clean gym, not very busy so you used any type of the many machines. Across from the gym, we ate breakfast (again excellent food and selection). From there we went to the private beach by speed boat. We found this to be of great fun going and coming. the only thing, you can't spend nights there (after 7pm). The family side of the private island is wonderful, the ocean is spectacular, but it's closed off. The restaurant there on the private island has also great food. The adult side of the private island had too many stones, rocks, ect., so, we didn't even bother to stay. During the month of July, it's not that rainy, so, we saw maybe one or two days of a bit of rain. Oh, before I forget, all-inclusive at this resort doesn't really mean all-inclusive, the blue floating devices, canoes I think there called, all of which you have to pay for, not included. Also, Internet service not included. Otherwise, the food, stay and ocean was beautiful. The family hotel has a small part of an ocean enclosed, didn't like it, was quite dirty. So we never went. Another few things, things are not cheap there, better shop in buffalo. The only beer that's free is their beer, which is not bad, but it's no corona or hennessy.

This was our third stay at this hotel. The speed boat to Renaissance island is the best feature of the hotel. I think the hotel, its restaurants and bars are way over priced. I watched housekeeping servicing the room and was disappointed to see the lack of cleaning that went into the bathroom. The area is now very quiet. There is very little to do in the evening. Senor Frogs has closed, the nite club opposite dunkin donuts has also closed. The Paddock Bar no longer has disco music. If you are in your 20s or 30s and want to party while on holidays THIS IS NOT THE PLACE FOR YOU.
There are some bars over in the marina but this are quiet and more restaurant orientated.
The weather is also disappointing in September and October.

The last time I stayed at the Renaissance was in 2005. We returned here for part of our anniversary trip. It was just as I remembered, open air concept, pool right next to the lobby, overlooking the main drag, Starbucks on the first floor by the mall and boat ride to the island. If you're looking for a stree free hotel stay, this is it since there are no children allowed at this hotel (they must stay at the Marina hotel). The rooms are undoubtedly small but you compare that to how much time you actually spend in the room. We took advantage of scheduling a couples Seascape package to Spa Cove. You take the boat out to Renaissance Island (another plus) and go to their private thatched spa room that is open facing the sea. There are hammocks to relax in, a private shower, and even a private area of the beach to swim at.
I'd say the only downfalls to this hotel would be that you are stuck downtown in the hussle and bussle and that you aren't on the beach. But if you spend most of your time at the pool anyway, I don't see it as a con. If you felt the need for the beach, you could just take the boat over to the island.
