“Awkward Cultural Experience”

Bonbini Festival Show
Reviewed 19 June 2014

We thought this would be an entertaining way to learn about the culture of Aruba, but the show a little too "off-the-cuff" for us. Admission is $5 (not bad), and there are some local artisans selling jewelry and other goods inside the front door. They also sell a limited amount of local food, which we didn't try. The show itself does convey some of the prominent milestones in Aruban history, but the stories are a bit drawn out at times. The performances are closer to amateur-grade than professional, some of them being awkward to watch or participate in, and the show seems to go on forever. I think 2.5 hours is fine for a professional show, but we were ready to leave after 30 minutes. If you decide to go, have plenty of drinks before you head out... I think you'll find it more entertaining.

Prior to attending, I was somewhat concerned because there were several negative reviews. I guess it depends on your expectations. If your expecting a Las Vegas type review, you'll be disappointed, If you're looking for a fun evening and want to learn something about the music, dance, and culture of Aruba, you'll have a very nice time. The performers and costumes were good, and the whole thing was presented with congeniality and a spirit of comraderie. The food looked good and the crafts sold were of better quality than the junk you see in most of the souvenier stores. It's only $5 to get in. All in all, a well spent evening.

The show was great, and so was the local food for sale. Beforehand they had some local crafts available for purchase. I learned a lot about Aruba and for 5 dollars it was worth going. The dancing, performances, and singing were all really great and fantastic. The host was funny and entertaining.

The outfits are very bright and colorful. The music is nice and the dances are beautiful. The food was also delicious.

The locals call this the Bon Bini Festival held every Tuesday night and all tourists are invited to mingle with the locals and learn more about the culture and lifestyle. Lots of local food and drink, dancing and music, quite an experience! Thoroughly enjoyed it and would love to return.
