We stayed at the Gypsy Hut at Mandinam which is a farm set on 450 acres. The hut its self boasts its own driveway so you do not have to pass the farm house which gave the feeling of being really secluded. Stayed for 3 nights and did mostly nothing apart from read, eat and soak in the log fuelled hot-tub :-) we did take a short strole up on to a small hill where the 360 views were amazing. The red kites were seen at various times through out the day and evening and then at dusk the bats can be seen flying through the trees. Livestock from the farm roamed fairly near to the hut and you could hear the animals making their various noises most of the day..... Have decided that it is really tiring doing nothing but think that i may have to go back very soon to soak up the magical atmosphere....... Marcus and Daniella who run the place really were most welcoming and were keen that you got what YOU want out of the stay. Would and have recommended to all friends and family.

My husband and I stayed in the shepherd's hut at Mandinam to celebrate his birthday and we absolutely loved it. It was a bit like camping in a cabin, but the hut is so unique and cozy. It's set far away from the farmers' house, so we felt very secluded, and there are lovely views over one hill and a little pond to one side of the hut, where we had a seriously epic barbecue using some of the farm's own lamb and steak.

There is a separate shower hut a few feet away from the hut--Marcus, the owner comes by on his four-wheeler once a day and lights a fire to heat the water, which seemed to keep the water hot for a full 24 hours--amazing. In the interest of full disclosure, the only thing that might keep some travellers away was the eco-toilet, which is basically a porto-loo that eventually produces a usable compost. Porto-loos are never the most enchanting, but at least this one is set down the path a little distance away from the hut, so no smells intruding on the rest of your experience, and it's clean enough--plus very eco-friendly. And since this is basically camping in comfort, I hope it won't put anyone off.

The farmers are slightly eccentric, but really lovely, helpful, and salt of the earth (they didn't even know about tripadvisor when we mentioned it--we'd found them through the Alistair Sawdays website). They had a couple worn out but sturdy-looking bicycles for us to borrow if we wanted to explore their huge farm or ride down to the village. We didn't have much time, though, and drove over to the Brecon Beacons, which was cool with them--they showed us the best spots to visit on our maps and gave us advice on where to eat (The Red Lion in Llangadog and The Red Pig in Llanddeusant were both fantastic [P.S. we're foodies and take this pretty seriously]--don't miss them if you stay in the area).

This is a fabulous base for visiting this side of the Brecon Beacons, Llangadog is really friendly, and we left feeling very relaxed and wishing we had another day or two. The fact that it was so positive for the environment ended up being just a really nice bonus.
