“Nowhere Else But The Tradewinds Club!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

Second Visit...Will Return.
The convenience of having the concierge dining lounge, with it's ever changing menu, is unmatched. The fact that you can leave the beach, cover up and be eating within 10 minutes, only to return to the beach right after eating is priceless. Adult only pool and beach area are the perfect compliment to being pampered with eucalyptus soaked cold clothes and ice cold bottled water delivered right to your chair. Amazing beach. Perfect, Restful Vacation!

Room Tip: Tradewinds Club, Oceanview

Our vacation in February was to Aruba and we stayed at the Marriott Stellaris. Aruba is a dream island, very friendly and very relaxing, can't wait to go back again! The Marriott didn't fail either. The service was wonderful. From the moment you arrive at the curb, to the lobby, checking in and the wait staff at the pool/beach! Everyone is friendly and attentive! Our room was clean, nice and perfect for our stay. Definitely will consider upgrading next time to the Trade Winds Club for our next visit. The hotel is angled in a "V" shape to have as many rooms as possible have an ocean view. Our room was 2 away from ocean front, so we had a terrific view of the ocean as well as the pool below us (would highly recommend this). We actually had a room closer to middle of the "V", we still had a view of the ocean but the problem was that we also had a view of an air conditioning condensor. We asked our bellman if he could assist us in getting a better room, he did and the front desk accommodated us within a couple of hours. This room was the same but with an exceptional view! Thank you so much Marriott! Casino was a nice option, but it isn't a smoke free casino, it isn't that bad though! Concierge was great, helped us book a jeep tour of the island. We would would recommend this for first time visitors to the island! The Spa was nice and clean, but a little pricey as most SPA are in resort hotels. We got massages and mani/pedis! It is a great option but if you are used to going to spa's at other locations, it's ok for a vacation. Restaurants are nice too, didn't get to eat at Simply Fish, the restaurant right on the beach, but will make this a priority next time! The pools are awesome (family and adult) and the beach is absolutely beautiful, very calm, warm and clear water. Many types of water activities/sports rental at your finger tips. We rented paddle boards and loved it You could rent a papalu - covered umbrella (Spelling?), which we did for a couple of days. You just have to get in line in the morning or after 4:00 at the rental/towel hut, for a fee of 20 or 25 dollars a day. The attendant will show you the availability of the umbrellas and the location and days. This is a little bit of a pain in the neck to do (time wise), but worth it, if you like to have direct shade by the ocean. The other option is that you can get a chaise lounge and try to find share near or under the many palm trees by the water too, (for free:). If there is only one complaint, and its my biggest, is that people literally get up at 5:30/6:00 am to "reserve" their chairs by the main big pool. There is no formal reserve process, first come first serve. They get get up, get their towels and put them on the chaise lounges for their families and then go back to bed. Some chairs are spoken for but not even occupied until 12:00 in the afternoon. We witnessed this several times. We were able on a couple of days to still find chairs later on in the morning, but you may be in direct sun and not get enough for you entire family. The Marriott really needs to do something about this, but I don't know what they can do? Even if you are an early riser and get to the pool by 8:00 in the morning, you will find that most of the desirable chairs area already spoken for. I wish this process could be overhauled, but I'm sure it won't be! I will know for next time though. Although this was very disheartening, I would and will go back to this hotel again. A shout out to the staff in the lobby cafe, we had breakfast there almost every morning. The employees are warm and friendly, just so nice first thing in the morning. This hotel is great for families and couples alike, just choose your pool and room. The adult pool, no children allowed, is a quiet wonderful option too, you probably can get a room on that side of the hotel for an additional "adult" only option. Great Marriott Hotel! We will definitely visit Aruba again and without question, stay here too.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room, which most are, but close to the beach. Rooms near the end of the hotel...

Here are the positives:
1. Nice large rooms with large balconies.
2. Partial ocean view rooms overlooking the pool had fantastic views
3. Great coffee shop serving bagels, pastries and breakfast sandwiches for a reasonable price
4. Slightly quieter end of the beach than the hotels closer to the restaurant area
5. Easy walk along the beach to lots of bars and restaurants (5-10 mins)
6. Vibrant nightlife
7. Great gym (machines, free weights etc)
8. Refrigerators in the room (not mini bars)

Here are the negatives:
1. While the main pool area is really attractive, the pool is kinda small for a Marriott Resort
2. If you want a lounger with umbrella be prepared to be down at the pool by 7.30 am
3. The beach area is compact (only the Ritz had more room on Palm Beach)
4. No turn down service at night and the beds are not the Marriott Dream Beds (they are comfortable though)

Things to know about the area:
1. There are plenty of water sports around (jet skiing, sailing, wind surfing, kite surfing, scuba, snorkeling)
2. Eagle beach is beautiful. Much bigger, much less crowded. It is a 10 min car drive away.
3. Local restaurants and bars are a bit more expensive than the US but not much.
4. If you are here for a week don't hire a car for the whole time. There really is not that much to see in Aruba. There is a Budget car hire booth in the restaurant area or the hotel can arrange one if you want to get a feel for the island for a day or two
5. Orangastad is not that attractive and not really worth a trip unless you are going to one of the restaurants there

Dear Justin

Thanks for taking time to review our resort, it is very much appreciated. I am happy to hear that you liked our balcony’s, they really are huge, the perfect spot to sit and watch the sunset. It sounds like you certainly explored our island and enjoyed a whole bunch of activities, I also enjoy Eagle beach, a great spot to go with the kids in the late afternoon. Again thank you for your review and I look forward to welcoming you back to our resort soon.

It is a a very nice place stay. Is it world class stunning? No. Did we complain or expect more? No. It is simply the Aruba Marriott and it is great for what it is.

We stayed at the Tradewinds Club within the hotel. I recommend this. The cost might be higher per room but the club serves a limited but adequate breakfast. lunch, cocktail hour, and dinner. This is convenient and included in the cost of your room. We were skeptical but we used the club and its services more often than we thought and perhaps saved a bit. Plus you can always go into the club and grab a beer or two, or a bottle of water, and bring to your room. Very convenient.

If you stay at the club your check in and check out is up at the club so no line at the front desk and very personal service. If you stay there don't go to the main check in. Tell the bellman that your have reserved the Tradewinds and they will bring you up. They also act as a concierge so all reservations, trips, etc they will help you with.

We had an ocean front room which had a great view of the ocean and pool area. While not extraordinarily large the room was more than adequate. My only complaint with the room was that the balcony was extremely hot and unusable most of the time but this is just nit picking.

Restaurants in the hotel were fine. We liked Simply Fish for the romantic beach side dinning, and the Sushi place for a quick bite. La Vista is what it should be and nice.

The pools especially the adult pool is nice. If the adult pool is your thing make sure you rent a cabana. This is done in the fitness center and comes with a drink credit, if that is also your thing, it makes the cost of the cabana $25 a day ($75 - $50 drink credit). We thought the cabanas would be in high demand so we went early at 7 or 8 AM to reserve them. We were always the first to do so. Different times of year might not be the same. We did not try and reserve a palapas on the beach and as I did see lines for those fairly early those are probably different.

Service at the all the pools is friendly and prompt. Giovanni, who seems to circulate through the various outside bars, is the man when it comes to bartenders. They have "happy hours" at the pool throughout the day. If you don't know if it is happy hour they will let you know. Drinks are two for one but they must be the same. Neither my wife and I could make sense of it..

If you like the Iguanas by the pool, an offering of pineapple from your dink is always appreciated by them. Just don't get upset when their friends stop by for a bite.

We had a couples massage at the spa. While a nice and pleasant massage we have had many better ones. The massage started at least 15 minutes late and ended at 10 minutes early. Hard to complain about a massage but for the price I did feel we did not get our moneys worth. I would go someplace else.

Dear Dennis

Thanks for taking the time to review our resort, it is very much appreciated. You mentioned Giovanni, who certainly is a super bartender. I will make a point of personally passing along your review to him. He will be thrilled. I will also pass along your feedback to Mandara Spa, as you certainly should have had the full time allotment. Again thanks for the review, and I look forward to welcoming you back again next year.

I stayed at the Hyatt last May on a similar group trip. I can see why the trip planner picked the Marriott vs. Hyatt for the kind of people we went with on this trip. Last trip was about drinking and waterslide competitions. This trip was more about quality.
Lobby- Hyatt wins. Open air and impressive view. Marriott is closed and smells like the casino. But let's be honest, no one goes to Aruba to hang out in a lobby.
Landscaping- Give the edge to the Hyatt because they have fancy birds in cages and had lots of coy and swans. I visited again and didn't see coy or swans.
Check In-Out- Similar
Rooms- difficult to compare. I was in an ocean front room last time at Hyatt, and I was in a corner obscured view room this time at the Marriott. Both Views were fine. I'm not much for hanging on the balcony. The basic Marriott closet was TINY. I've seen bigger closets at a Motel 6. I brought tons of clothes for a long week so all my hanging stuff along with my husbands was crammed in. Utilized dressers for folded stuff. I'm not sure if the Hyatt's basic room closet compares, but I don't remember having trouble with that last May. The bathroom at the Marriott was good for two people. I don't remember the Hyatt's but it was nice I'm sure.
Pools- Hyatt has 1 pool which is always crowded. It has a water slide which is cool and a bar in the pool. Marriott has a family pool and an adult pool which seems to be the norm for Marriott. The H2Oasis pool is very quite and has a nice pool side bar with servers walking around. The main pool has a bar in the pool, a waterfall, and nice sunning decks in the water. The chairs at the Marriott are nicer, and have more space between them. A better designed layout overall. The Hyatt chairs are side to side touching for 2 or 3 rows right by the pool. Kind of gives it a community pool vibe more than luxury resort.
Beach- The Marriott beach seems less busy and fewer boats zooming about in the water. I didn't spend a bunch of time at the beach at the Hyatt because I wasn't comfortable swimming around that many boats. I don't remember if their area was roped off like the Marriott. The areas around the Hyatt are crowded with cheaper hotels so it makes the beach busier. But it still feels nicer than the other sides of it's beach. The Marriott is down the beach towards the end by the Ritz. I went in the ocean a lot more at the Marriott. There are still a lot of beach chairs at the Marriott, but getting a hut at either the Hyatt or Marriott is near impossible if you're not careful.

Room Tip: Ocean front on the North end are going to have the best views.

Look, I really wanted to give them the five stars they deserve, but dog gone it, why do they have that silly reservation system for umbrella/chairs/floats? You will see it mentioned in most other reviews, you have to get up at 6 to 6:30am, stand in line, then at 7am reserve your spot on the beach, or you are on your own. For a resort that trys so hard to meet every need, this is just bad! But the staff were very friendly, heck, the whole island is friendly, and the extra 175 bucks for the eighth floor "Tradewinds" was worth it. Come on people, you are on vacation, don't go cheap.

Room Tip: The Tradewinds give you free meals, free drinks, special access to the beach (and the beach is crowd...

Thank you for your review of our resort, we do appreciate the feedback. Matt, the Hotel Manager is away from the hotel today so he is not able to personally respond to your review as he usually does. You mentioned the beach palapa’s, and we have to say that it certainly is difficult for all of the major beach hotels to manage this area, all of Aruba’s beautiful beaches are public, and as such the number of palapa’s we have is not regulated by the hotel. We do feel that we offer a very fair approach to getting a palapa, which allows some to be given out in the morning for the next day, some in the afternoon and some at a small price. Of course the system is not perfect, and not everyone may get a palapa every day during peak season. Recognizing this we did add an additional pool recently, which has become very popular with our adult guests. Once he is back he will go through your kind comments and feedback with the team.

I was not a hotel guest, but a timeshare renter guest. I was treated very nicely. I was given coupons at my arrival for free drinks. I was also greeted with a cold bottle of water when I got out of my taxi.
My only con is the smoking in the casino. Parts of the hotel smell like smoke because of this. It is not too bad though.
They have a cafe in the lobby with breakfast, lunch, dinner and ice cream. The staff there was great and fast. The shrimp salad wrap was GREAT! I bought a wrap, soda and salad and brought it to the beach. It was cheaper than the restaurant and was tasty.

Room Tip: Ask for a room pool front. That way you can see the ocean.
