We were looking for a comfortable place with a view of the ocean, a kitchen, and some peace and quiet. We found all of those things at the Oceania. We rented a 2 bedroom, 3 bath condo in the Boca Catalina building (356), through Prestige Reality. The condo is a unit in the main U-shapped area around the 3 pools; it is near the farther end of the building from the beach, overlooking the 3 pools, with an angled (but good) view of the beach. The condo was absolutely lovely and it's location on Eagle Beach (one of the most beautiful beaches I've seen) was perfect. You simply had to cross the street and, voila, you were there. The beach was not crowded (there is no comparison to the packed beaches in the high rise area…OY), and provided you got to the beach at a reasonable time before noon, you typically had no problem getting a spot with some shade. And the lovely ocean breezes made sitting in the sun or shade a joy. Make sure you show up at the beach for the glorious sunsets!
The condo was charming, with very nice furniture and decor. The bed was wonderfully comfortable. The showers were excellent. The place was so well-appointed that we could have thrown a dinner party for 10 people with no problem… nice dining room table and chairs… great selection of glassware, table settings, pots and pans. In addition, there was a (very necessary) blender, toaster, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, etc. Washer and dryer, too. We had two terraces, a smallish one off of the master bedroom and a good sized one with tables and chairs off of the living room. It was great to sit out for morning coffee or evening cocktails, watching the palm trees sway gently in the breeze… with a view of the pools and the turquoise ocean beyond. Delightful! We had a few dinners out there, as well. The Prestige website gives you a very nice description of all that is included with the condo, including beach chairs, and in our case, pool toys for kiddies if you have them. The pools were beautiful and rarely were there more than 5 or 6 folks using them at any one time during our stay. Amazing. The grounds were immaculate and there were at least 3 people working to keep them beautiful every morning. Although Aruba is considered a very safe island to visit, it was very nice to know that there is a security guard posted at the entrance, and that the gate to the street/beach was locked at all times (residents get a code that they can use to get in and out).
Most of the week (we were there from Jan. 10-18), the place was super quiet. Near the end of the week (around Wed/Thursday) it got a little more busy as there was an influx of what seemed to be retirees there for a couple of weeks, a couple of families with young children, and a few more couples. While we were there, most of the folks seemed to be either Canadians or US citizens, with some folks from Venezuela and some French speakers. A nice mix, but I heard mostly English spoken. People were very friendly everywhere we went. And Prestige Realty was very helpful and professional.
As this is a condo, not a hotel, you should be aware that you'll be responsible for taking care of certain things yourself. Like providing your own shampoo and soap. There is no daily maid service (though we had a surprise mid-week visit by some cleaning folks, which was nice). Towels (bathroom and beach), bed linens, blankets, hair dryer, toilet paper, and a starter soap are provided. Also provided were dish detergent, some plastic wrap, and basic spices, which was very nice.
We enjoyed an occasional lunch at the charming Tulip restaurant (right next door)… easy to saunter to, right off the beach. The Screaming Eagle further down the street in the other direction was a fine dining experience (tres moderne… perhaps a tad pretentious but fun). We would recommend the lower key (but very busy) Madame Janette's for a nice(er) meal… make sure to book ahead of time.
All in all, if you want to be in the thick of things… a large selection of restaurants, bright lights, casinos, lots of shops/bars and water sports right nearby, this set of condos may not be the place for you. This place is more private, for relaxing in modern comfort and enjoying the beauty of the beach. However, if you stay at the condos, a short ride down the road will get you to all of those things, and you'll be able to return back to a more private place. We sure hope to come back again and again.
