“Very pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

Stayed here on our honeymoon. We were very sceptical having read some very bad reviews, which we found to be completely unfounded. The quality of the hotel does seem to depend on which building you are in. We were in block A - the main building and it was fantastic, floor 9. The room is huge as is the balcony which overlooked the pool and beach. The rooms were cleaned daily, towels changed everyday and extra towels offered by housekeeping during the evening for the next morning. Mini-bar was stocked (almost) daily and if we were running low we called down and it was restocked. Only used room service once. it was very nice and arrived within 20 minutes.

The staff at the pool, beach and bars are very friendly - less so in the restaurant. Not rude but just not happy. Food in the buffet was great - yes some of the same things are available each day but there are so many choices you can eat something different every day. Also sandwiches, hotdogs and nachos available in the sports bar if you are still hungry (which I doubt).

We didn't try the speciality restaurants so can't comment but we only heard positive things about them.

The birds can be a bit of a nuisance if you sit outside but don't really see what you can do about that. Didn't really bother us.

The beach is beautiful - white sand, turquoise water. We didn't find it dirty at all. there are lots of bins provided at the back of the beach. The pool was also lovely. the staff did their best to keep it clean but with the wind and people being too lazy to get up and put their cups in the bin there were inevitably some cups in the pool - this was cleaned regularly though.

We managed to get a sunbed every day either by the pool or on the beach. We didn't go down until about 8.30. if you want a "prime" spot on the beach, people were getting up at 6.30am for those - ridiculous.

The buses are great and we took one into Orangestad - definitely worth a visit. All the designer shops are there as well as the local markets and the tram which is free and a great ride through the town. To the left of the hotel are more shops, restaurants and bars.

The Island deserves is tag of One Happy Island. it certainly is that. The people are so friendly and happy and you feel completely safe all the time.

The only negative which stops me giving this five stars is the building works next door. By the time we were leaving it was more intrusive and taking place outside the outdoor restaurant so was very noisy and dusty if you sat out there. Once you were by the pool or on the beach you didn't notice it - that's the price of progress I guess.

De Palm Tours do an off road jeep safari. Was a brilliant trip of the whole island, thoroughly recommend it.

Kick back, relax and enjoy. Would we go back? Tomorrow if we could!!!

Room Tip: Ask for block A, high floor. Floor 9 have the largest balconies.

i stayed at this resort in may 2014 with a group of freinds we stayed there for soulbeach musuc festival..the pros are that the resort itself is really nice and very pretty at night...the staff was very helpful and pleasant!! i like the fact that there is a liquer dispenser in your room along with a stocked mini fridge with sodas and water...now the cons!! the rooms are very dated and furniture itself is just nasty...our shower leaked onto the floor daily which caused us to have ants...the smell alone in the hallways were horrible like mold and old cheese!! not kidding at all this resort waste so much money throwing away food because nasty..not fresh whatsoever bugs all over buffets...you would think with this being a major chain hotel they would have a system to avoind bugs in your food...only thing i enjoyed was the tuna sandwich...save your money!! its not worth paying for all inclusive in my opinion..this hotel needs a major face lift and new alchohol and new chefs!!

Room Tip: ask for a room with a large balcony

We were brought there not knowing what to expect because we were being shipped there because our hotel the Occidential overbooked! The Occidential did nothing to help us switch. The Rui on the other hand treated us like we were VIP guests. They quickly got us rooms. Which were beautiful. Perfect view! The staff there were so helpful and nice. We should have switched to the Rui. The pool was great, the beach was perfect. At the pool they had fun activities going on. The rooms and hotel were clean and beautiful. Our next trip to Aruba we will be staying here. When we were moving back to our original hotel who again did nothing to help, the Rui staff helped, going above and beyond. If you want an all-inclusive hotel by the shopping this is the place to be! Thank you to the entire staff at the Riu!

Room Tip: Rooms were great! The mini bar is bottles of top shelf liquor, unlike our other hotel that was beer...

I have been to Aruba at least 20 times and this was our first stay here. I have walked by the property on other visits and thought it looked very nice so we chose this property. It was more windy here than any other place we stayed. The umbrellas at the pool kept blowing over. This resort had plenty of seating for everyone unlike most of the other hotels. I did get up early to reserve my seats, but you could come out any time of the day and find chairs here and there if you weren't too picky as to were you sat. You could also find seating at the beach unlike other hotels where you would have to be down there between 6 and 7 am.
The buffet dining hall was one of the best that I've seen. Plenty of room at any time of the day to go in to have something to eat. The food was also better than most other all inclusive hotels that we stayed at. There was plenty to pick from. Some of the food stayed the same daily, but the main course changed daily. As soon as an item was almost gone they replaced it with fresh food. More than enough staff on hand to keep things moving. We did not eat at any of the places where you needed to make reservations for dinner, but I did make one for the steak house but we did not what to eat outside and that place is outside by the beach. People talked about long lines for making reservations, but that was not the case. I went down at 8:10 and there were only 3 people in line so I really don't know what all the reviews were talking about.
Not much going on around the pool. The staff would act as though something was going to take place, but most of the times nothing was happening until 3:00. There was no music or anything. My kids played pool water polo the first 2 days and then the net broke. I still don't understand why they never replaced it. Other hotels would have bingo and I was surprised to see none of that here. There was an actively sheet for times that things were suppose to take place but that rarely happened.
The rooms were not all that bad. Enough space and clean but nothing ultra modern. The beds were hard like other people had said, but I guess it's just what you prefer. I'd rather have hard over a soft lumpy bed any day.
There was a outside bar at night that was always full and then at 10:00 they would have a show going on inside. I don't know what the shows were about since it was always full so I didn't have a chance to see. None of the shows on the island are anything great so I'm sure I didn't miss anything.
The staff was always helpful and like I said before there was more than enough of them.
I would not recommend this hotel for people with small children because there would be nothing to do.

We are still here at the moment this hotel has been badly mis sold the service is rubbish report a fault to reception it takes days not hours .Room service one hour wait .Four days on the bounce had to request room towels from reception it takes 2 hours before they arrive. The management in this hotel is seriously failing and needs to up its game. Also had to move rooms this took 3 days as over booked.if I was the manager of this hotel I would start looking for another job probably looking after beach loungers Riu need to look at their brand as this is an embarrassment to the group

Good luck if you are staying here any time soon as its a lottery on the rooms I forgot to mention the building works so did our holiday company Thomson

the staff where fantastic, couldnt be more helpful. Myself and my boyfriend are in our 20s and we where bored a lot of the time. we had to go out of the hotel a few nights to have a good night. A lot of people we spoke to agreed that the entertainment at night was very poor, very old fashioned and boring. A lot of people where in bed early because its so boring.

Pool was good, food in the buffet was nice and the Italian restaurant, the other resaraunts where not very nice.
very clean hotel but needs to be updated. If you are young couple I would not recommend to go here, we spent a lot of money on food and drinks as we went out a lot of the time,
The island is beautiful and dont have a bad word to say about Aruba itself.
