I realize this is more of a time share, but not many reviews on Casa del Mar so I figured I would throw in my two cents. I went here for a week in March 2010 with my wife and 2-year-old and we had a great time. Stayed in one of the 1-bedroom suites (Ambassador?) and was not thrilled with the room and its proximity to the pool & beach, but the walk wasn't bad and we were never really in the room. The staff did a great job cleaning the room every day (not common in all time shares from my experience). The beach was great, a little rough for a toddler, but great sand for our little one. I liked their beach a lot more than Aruba Beach Club's next door. There's a contingent of guests that wake up around 5 or 6 to grab chairs on the beach, but this seemed a little aggressive as we never had a problem getting chairs.
Matthew's is a huge positive for Casa del Mar - Really great lunch right next to the beach and a fun happy hour (we were there for St. Patrick's Day and it was a blast). They have all-you-can eat ribs on Wednesdays and the place is PACKED, we didn't eat there, but it will be on our itinerary for the next trip. Other restaurants we enjoyed were Pincho's, The Paddock in town, Ruinas del Mar, and Madame Jeanette's. Whatever you do........please.......do not......ever...... eat at Sunset Beach (at the Divi Pheonix). Just trust me on this.
The fitness center is really run down and the equipment is terrible, but they have signs up about getting new machines in the near future. My biggest problem with the hotel is their situation with the kid's pool. Children under 4 are not allowed in the adult pool (even with swim diapers) and their kid's pool was closed for 2 straight days while we were there, so my son had no place to swim. When I asked why it was closed, they rather rudely just told me it was for cleaning. Not sure why this had to be done during the day (no one was doing any work on it at night) and it would have made other arrangements while the kid pool was shut down. Casa del Mar has a kid's club that seems really popular for ages 4 and up.
The Alhambra Casino is right across the street and draws a pretty good size crowd every night of the week. There's a Dunkin' Donuts next to the casino, which was very convenient in the mornings. My wife and I like to go running on vacation and there's a great route along the beach heading towards the high rise area. We rented a car for the week and it was nice for making quick drives over to the grocery store (Super Value?) for food & supplies.
All-in-all, we had a really fun stay at Casa del Mar. This was our 2nd time in Aruba (were at the Rennaissance in town last time) and we love the island. May stay in the high rise area next time just to try out a different area, but we would definitely stay at Casa del Mar again.
