“Mariott Ocean Club - home away from home”
Reviewed 30 October 2011

We are 45 year old married couple who like night life. We have traveled throughout Caribbean – Aruba 7 times, Cancun 3 times, Play del Carmen twice, Bahamas twice, San Juan once, Dominican Republic once and we have been on 2 cruises. Stayed in Aruba 10/13-10/18/11(thurs-tues). Direct flight down on Jet Blue. We were through customs and had our luggage within 40 min. Hotel is in the high rise Palm Beach area 15 min ride from airport. We rented a car from Hertz (outside airport across from where buses pick you up) that we planned to drop off at the Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino the next day. All the hotels have some car rental company in their lobby so you don’t have to go all the way back to the airport to return the car.

HOTEL/CONDOS – This is a timeshare property that has the Mariott Resort and Stellaris Casino hotel on one side and the Mariott Surf Club timeshares on the other. It is at the very end of the high rise hotel zone as you head toward the California Lighthouse end of island. There is however a new Ritz-Carlton being built on the other side of the Marriott Resort Stellaris hotel. This is our second stay at this property.

ROOM –Rooms in this property are either 1 or 2 bedroom suites with full kitchen and living room. We had a 1 BR suite and really love it. If you are looking to save some money on breakfast/lunch and drinks throughout the day this is the way to go. On our way from airport we stopped at supermarket and picked up all our supplies before getting to hotel. Porter’s help you load up all your luggage and groceries and bring it right to your room. Check in took 10 minutes. Nobody else waiting to check in. Had breakfast/lunch and all the drinks we wanted right out of our full service kitchen. King size bed in MBR was very comfortable. 2 flat screen TV’s (BR and LR) and a DVD player in LR. Also each floor has a room with 4 washer/dryer units for your use for free.

GROUNDS - Very nice. Pool area is free form and rather large. A lot of chairs around the pool area, chairs have umbrellas. There is a large Jacuzzi in the middle of the pool area that is secluded. Swim up bar and restaurant are adjacent to where beach starts. Lots of Palapas. This property rents some of the palapas. Go to the towel hut and they have a diagram of all the huts. About 60% of them can be reserved and 40% are first come first serve. Ocean front row is $15/day all rows behind that $10/day. We did reserve for 3 of the days we were there but based on the amount of people who were there at this time we did not need to. Sept/Oct are the slow months for Aruba. Towels are free just must give them your room number. Palapas are nicely spaced out compared to some of the other properties we walked passed each morning as we walked the beach from our end all the way to the Westin, which is at the beginning of high rise section. We brought our own cooler/drinks to the beach every day. There was waiter service but it is very sporadic compared to other properties/islands we have visited. Beach is beautiful with just a small area of small rocks right at the shore when entering water. Water is crystal clear.

RESTAURANTS – we did not order from the Ocean café beach front restaurant. We did go to the Champions Sports bar to watch football (PATS) on Sunday. Great TV viewing for all sports. They have the Direct TV NFL package so all games available. They do good job of seating all fans of same team in same area so as to better be able to organize TV’s to the proper games. Food is ok-good. Typical US bar food fare..wings/burgers/salads. Full line of beers available. Service was good.

DRINKS – as with all of ARUBA every liquor you could want they have. At this hotel they had local beers, balashi/polar, Coors light, bud light, Heineken, amstel bright. Drinks are expensive. If staying in a condo with kitchen buy bottles of your favorite liquor or beer and save money that way.

LOCATION - Hotel is in high rise section, palm beach. This area has really been built up and there is a large shopping/nightlife/entertainment(Palm Beach Plaza/The Village/South Beach Mall) area across the street from the beach starting at the Holiday Innand going all the way down to the Riu. It is a 5-7 min walk from this property to holiday inn and the start of the shopping mentioned above. You can either walk the beach or you have to walk out on the sidewalk of the street that you drove in on. It is still a cab ride away to get to the grocery stores which are half way between high rise section and the airport. They are in the process of building a new grocey store a lot closer to the high rise section. For a fun night out go to Sopranos piano bar in the shopping mall mentioned above.

Off site dining we ate at Passions on the Beach (across from Amsterdam manor)/ Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse(in the Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino hotel)/Hard Rock Care.
Both Passions on the Beach and Ruth’s Chris I have written reviews on in tripadvisor and highly recommend both.

Hard Rock café is like all other hard rock’s throughout the world.

The Ocean Club helped me decide that Aruba is my favorite place to be. Been going to Aruba since 2007, once or twice a year. It's a small island, so it's easy to see all the sites. My main objective is to spend most of my time at the pool/at the beach. I think the Ocean Club provides the very best in cleanliness/maintenance of the accomodations, common areas, the grounds/pool. The staff is helpful/friendly. There is a decent convenience store, and a few other nice little stores there: clothing, jewelery, cosmetics, home accents. There is a Mandara Spa on the premises, and I've had good massages, manicures & pedicures there. Great restaurants there and closeby. Love the beach, and it's easy to get a palapa. It's within walking distance to do a little shopping. Ling and Sons IGA Grocery is a short cab ride and has a wonderful selection. It's not as crowded as the Marriott Surf Club (next door-yes I've stayed there, too), and to me, that makes the Marriott Ocean Club seem more relaxed. The Marriott Stellaris Hotel/Casino is next door (-yes I've stayed there, too). It's within walking distance of other hotels/casinos. I recommend most people should stay here. If travelling with children, I recommend you stay at the Surf Club ;)

Room Tip: I've never had a "bad" room, although I wouldn't choose one on the lower floors be...

Had a wonderful first experience in Aruba while staying at the Marriott Ocean Club. Everything was perfect from start to finish. Accommodations were standard for Marriott, clean and complete. The grounds were immaculate. Pool/beach great! Plenty of palapas to go around. We did venture off property for a few meals and some shopping in town. The restaurants on site were great. La Vista had great buffets with no wait. The beach side restaurant was very good and had great service. The one thing I would skip was the live entertainment pool/beach side buffet Monday or Tuesday night that was advertised. The show was kind of cheesy and the food was just OK. We went into town (took the bus) to try to get some shopping deals but there were NO deals. Everything is expensive on the island. We would definitely recommend a beautiful restaurant off site called Pinchos. It was a 15 minute drive toward the airport but was the most romantic setting on the water in the evening. We heard it was a destination for a "date" on the bachelor in the 2006 show. I can see why. Another great restaurant a few blocks away on the strip of stores/restaurants that we discovered was Papillon. It was tucked away behind a row of other restaurants that we were tempted to try. We are glad we found it. We will most definitely be returning to Aruba!

We decided to give Aruba a try based on the reviews. As owners at the Frenchman's Cove Resort in St.Thomas, we kinda knew what to expect from Marriot. One week at the Ocean Club was just what we needed for a recharge.
The hotel is located between the Marriot Hotel & Casino and the Marriot Surf Club. This has it's advantages, because you are welcome to dine at all the restaraunts on all the properties and gives more options.
Pros:
-Once again, the location on Palm beach is great. All it takes is a 5-10 minute walk from a brand new mall and shopping area. There are lots of good restaraunts within walking distance from the Marriot properties.(Texas de Brazil, Cafe Rembrandt, Salt & Pepper, Flying Fishbone, Nobushi, Scala, Ruth Chris in Marriot Hotel, Moomba, Hacienda DeVittorio, Aqua Grill, just to name a few.)
-The beach area is large and located at the back of the property for easy access. There are palapas available and getting a chair seemed easy in October. The beach area was clean and the water was calm and warm. There are booths setup along the beach for those interested in water activites.
-Transportation around the island can be done pretty reasonable. There is a bus system in place that only cost 1.25 per person and travels from the High Rise Hotels to the Low Rise Hotels and downtown. We used this service several times, so their is not much need to rent a car if you are ok with waiting for bus service. The Marriot stop is located in front of the Surf Club.
-The weather was great. The sun shines most of the time in Aruba. The island is in more of an arid climate
-Short walk to the Stellaris Casino located in the Marriot Hotel
-Free wifi in the rooms was great for looking up things at home and points of interest on the island
-Large pool area with daily entertainment
Cons:
There really weren't that many for us.
-Being an owner in St.Thomas, we were expecting the water to be a little bit more clear. The beaches are still beatiful but not as pretty as the one's in St.Thomas/St.John in our opinion
-Aruba in general can be expensive. There is a daily tax on the room and the restaraunts generally cost us around $80- $120 to eat. We did splurge some at night because we were on vacation so this is just to give an idea of what to expect if you are going to sit down and eat at some of the local places.
-The views from the hotel are a bit limited the way the rooms are situated. We stayed on the sixth floor as recommended, and could see over the palm trees and a sliver of the beach. I could see if you were on floors 1-3 it would be hard to see the beach if that were to matter to someone.
-The happy hour at the pool is not much of a deal. Although we did spend some time at happy hour, the drinks were still $7 apiece which is the going rate for a regular drink throughout the island.
Overall, we had a great time and would enjoy to travel back to Aruba someday. Hope my review helps

Room Tip: Choose higher floors for views of beach

This was my first time to Aruba, but not my first time staying at a Marriot resort. As always Marriot has created an experience. I had a 2 bedroom that was superb. Room was clean, with high appointments from the kitchen, to the living area, the bedroom and baths. My view was spectacular facing the beach able to see the sun set on the ocean each night. The Ocean Club was just right for us.. Not busy and crowded like the Surf Club. Each day we were able to get the perfect hut and we didn't pay or reserve the night before. The staff was the friendliest. Always willing to assist and conversate. I want to give a special thank you to Linda that staffed the Towel Booth. She was so nice and on our last day thought enough of us to call to say goodby and welcome us to come again. The small cafe was a gem, not just because they had the right items for a quick bite, but after 6PM it was BOGO. Every evening, we picked up affordable sandwiches and snacks for our next day at the beach. I have to give a shout out to Madi.. Best tour on the island. Madi is a native that will take you to the Natural pools, bridges and the best beach on the island - Andicuri.. We had the beach to ourselves, swimming and jumping waves for close to a hour. Madi makes it personal and the ride is the best.. madimagicaltours.com. Took a sunset cruise with Red Sport. The crew, the food and the dancing was fun.. We were all friends by the time we debarked. I can go on and on but I won't.. Marriot you have my vote and I will be back next year.

There is not much more I can say about this timeshare resort that has not already been written. The rooms are clean and modern, the beach is just beautiful and the staff is lovely. After eight years, it just keeps getting better!

A couple of travel tips for those visiting the Ocean Club:
Fourth floor rooms and above offer the best views. Think of the facility as a large 'U.' Rooms inside the 'U' offer views of the pool and Caribbean. Rooms on the outside of the 'U' will offer some beach views, but you will also have a view of your neighboring resort.

If you plan to do laundry, please note you will be provided with one package of detergent in your room. Additional packets are available for purchase in the laundry area for $1.25 each.

Beach towels are available at the towel hut, just left of the Pavillion Restaurant (you will need to provide your room number for the towels). All beach palapas must be reserved through the towel hut. A number of palapas are available on a pay-reserve basis (up to three days in advance; $15 for first or second row, $10 for every row thereafter). Or, you can reserve a palapa for free, on a first-come, first-serve basis, when the towel hut opens in the morning.

Be sure to tip your servers and housekeeping staff; they work hard to make your stay a comfortable one.

Please use the trash receptacles on the beach - it only takes a minute! Please keep it clean for yourselves, the Aruban people and your fellow travelers!

Many thanks to the hard-working, dedicated Ocean Club staff for another wonderful stay!

This was our 5th time trading into the Ocean Club. They have nicely updated the rooms (but for some reason the same tired old whirlpool tubs & tiles were left). The only inside complaint I have is that the hall carpets on the 5th floor seemed quite dirty and need cleaning. The Ocean Club is still the quietest of the 3 properties esp. this time of the year. We were on the hotel side of the building and the construction on the new hotel pool is almost completed. The noise did not bother us. Outside the property is as beautiful as always...except for the walkway that extends from the end of the pool to the towel hut. It needs to be powerwashed!! People track through there all day and it is also where the outside bathrooms are located. (Gross place to walk in bare feet.....go around it). The beach is the same.....white and nice although they could do a little better job of raking it up more often. We had no problem renting palapas and there were a few open each day. Weather was sunny most of the time but we did have a few intermittent showers. The new shopping areas & restaurants near the high rises are all within walking distance. Texas de Brazil was excellent....as always!!! If you leave the island on Sat. or Sun., listen to them & be at the airport early. It's a madhouse!!! Hope all who go enjoy it as much as we did.

Room Tip: Ask for a room above the 3rd floor so you can see over the trees.
