“Relaxing Vacation”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

Spent a week with friends. Wish we could return already. I feel completely rested. You can wake up every day and walk right out to the beach. Your kids have an awesome pool with a lazy river included with your stay. To make it even better, there is a swim up bar for Mom's and Dad's! The restaurants off-site were excellent, we didn't have a bad meal all week. Make sure to try Linda's Pizza and Pancakes for breakfast, their pancakes were excellent! Dine out at least one night at Pincho's, you won't be sorry!!

It's hard to ever go wrong with Marriott and the Surf Club is no exception. Let's start with the roomy units with great beds and thermostats theat will really cool your room. Now the beach area is great and the giant pools and lazy rivers make it fun for the whole family. The staff will do whatever it takes to make sure your needs are met and that everyone has fun with activities non stop.

Room Tip: We rented a car because we like to explore islands. But not really necessary because it's close...

We own a three-bedroom unit at the Surf Club. We were there the second week of July, not having been there for five years. We were very disappointed with the overall condition of the unit we stayed in. Our annual maintenance fee is around $2000 and they certainly haven't spent much of it on the unit we were in. The cabinets and vanities were in rough shape. The refrigerator was missing a shelf and part of the door. The ice maker worked intermittently. The door out to the balconey scraped at the bottom and made a horrendous noise every time it was opened. The oven was missing racks and the dishwasher heating element didn't appear to be working. The grout on the tile floors is light gray around the perimeter of the room and black in the traffic areas. Overall the maintenance was lacking. I will admit though, that when we reported these problems during our meeting with the sales staff they had people in our room within the hour and most of the items were addressed. But these are onging maintenance items that should be taken care of on a regular basis.

The grounds and the beach are beautiful. We spent most of our time at the beach or in the Serenity Pool and had a wonderful, relaxing vacation. Guests are issued a chair tag when checking in. Supposedly you can tag chairs starting at 7 AM and any chairs cannot be unoccupied for more than two hours. It a system that works in theory only. We went out a 7 one morning to find a good number of chairs already tagged and at one time heard someone state that they would go out at 4:30 AM to tag chairs. Tagged chairs go unattended for 4-6 hours and no one is monitoring it.

We will probably trade off our week the next few years and go elsewhere. Hopefully when we get back to our home resort things will have been remodeled.

Thank you for visiting Marriott's Aruba Surf Club. As an owner, we appreciate your feedback and apologize there were multiple maintenance issues with your villa. This is not typical and should have been addressed prior to your arrival. We will share your feedback with the resort leadership team and thank you for bringing this to our attention. We look forward to hosting you again so we may truly exceed your expectations.

We had a blast at the surf club. This was our 3rd time visiting as a family with 2 young children, the last being a few years ago. It is busier for sure, it is louder, but let's not forget this is a huge resort complex. If this is your first visit, I would read reviews so you know what you should do everyday to make your visit more fun. A few things that helped us:
1. Someone wake up early (0700) and go tag your pool chairs and get your palapa ticket.
2. After breakfast or around 0900 bring towels and some floats down and inhabit your chairs and palapa.
3. ENJOY your day!!
4. Iguana feeding everyday, kids enjoyed this.

A couple of new things we did this time and enjoyed:

1. Donkey sanctuary- went in our car, kinda hard to find. We brought some apples to feed the donkeys. Lots of fun, owner very cool and knowledgable .

2. Jolly Pirates snorkel- brought our 8 yr old. Mostly a carribean boose cruise, but appropriate enough and our daughter did enjoy the snorkeling at arashi and the rope swing.

3. Red sail sunset cruise- relaxing pre-dinner activity for the whole family. Unlimited drinks and beer and a few light hours devours offered.

People are constantly leaving floats and toys here when they leave so not necessary to bring a ton of them.

Everything in the resort is an easy walk.

Don't forget this is the Caribbean so things are done differently, and it might take longer for things to happen or it might be done differently than you are used too, that is ok- you are on vacation.

Nice clean resort with helpful and friendly staff. Had a 3 bedroom suite in the Compass tower which was very large [sleeps 12],clean,comfortable,modern and well appointed. The kitchen was also large and had everything a well stocked kitchen would have. Had a very nice view of the pools and ocean and extremely quiet. We checked in super quick on a Monday, which I strongly suggest since I hear weekend check ins can be a disaster. Rented a car for the week which I also strongly recommend since there will be many trips to restaurants, grocery stores, and sightseeing. Rented a newer SUV for 7 days through Royal for $350. If staying 5+ days get the car. You'll be glad you did.

The Surf Club is definately designed for families which is great and thats why I chose this spot. I like a little noise and action and seeing people have a good time. No doubt during July 4th week you will get all of this and more. There were lots of children but all seemed very well behaved. Everyone was having a great time. We made some friends with other families and often bumped into each other throughout the day.

What you really don't want is the musical chair game that starts every morning around 6am. Best you bring an early riser with you who can get up and go down and reserve your pool and beach chairs placing tags on them. Make sure you place items on the chairs as well since the tags don't have your name on them. Also point out to the chair police that you have reserved these chairs. This will help stop but not guarantee other people from trying to take your chairs. It's a mess but with so many people staying I'm not sure what other alternative there is. There is really no more room for additional chairs unfortunately.

The pools are all nice and the lazy river can be relaxing but when crowded which is almost all the time you get plenty of feet, arms and butts bouncing all over the place. Good for the kids but I've had enough of the lazy river theme for awhile.

The pool bar was great. Volleyball games going on throughout the day plus the World Cup soccer games were on. Great to sit in the pool and watch the games. Prices of drinks not all so great. We always brought a large cooler of drinks/food down to the pool which definately saved a large amount of money over the course of the week.

The adult pool and spa was also relaxing when we needed a time out from the kiddies.

The beach was ok. Not great like some other locations. Again the beach is super crowded with chairs and palapas[straw huts]. The water was murky and having the pier and boats coming in and out right there causes much of that. I liked Palm Beach better. Forget about Baby Beach. Not worth the trip.

We did stock up on groceries the first 3 days there. Super Foods is close and had a decent selection including American brands. We cooked out on the grills at the resort a few nights and had breakfast in our condo every morning. If you enjoy a drink or two I suggest stocking up as well. The prices will shock you but not as bad if you were to purchase them at the pool or bar.
If you like beer try the Balashi brand. Its made in Aruba and not too bad. They make a light beer call Balashi Chill as well.

Leaving Aruba and going through customs is crazy and aggrevating. At first I thought we must be on a hidden video show that other people were watching and laughing at us. The problem is you go through Aruba and US customs all within a short space. Not well organized at all. I have to think leaving on a weekend and going through this circus must be horrendous .

All in all we had a great time. I likened this to Disney because of the crowd and amount of children. This was my second time visiting Aruba and most likely would stay at the "low rise" area again.

Room Tip: If you want space get the 3 bedroom 3 bath suite. Almost 1800 sq ft. Ask for a high floor pool view.

We are Marriott owners and exchanged our week for the Surf Club. As usual they did not disappoint. We are a family of 5 with kids, 11, 8 and 6. We all loved the pool and the beach. The lazy river was great and we enjoyed hanging together on that. Restaurants were good and the place was clean and well kept.

My wife and I, plus her cousin and husband, just returned from the Marriott Aruba Surf Club. We were there from July 28th thru August 3rd. Let me start by giving the disclaimer - my wife and I own a week at this Marriott resort in the Lighthouse Tower. Last year, we saved enough Marriott Destination points to add to our 2014 points and upgrade to an ocean front view in the
Lighthouse Tower - the view did not disappoint !!! The resort has a western exposure, so we could watch sunsets every night, cocktails in hand, without leaving the balcony.

This was our fifth trip to Aruba and like all the previous vacations, the weather was beautiful every day - sunny, 90 degrees. The resort is in great shape. Since our last visit, they have upgraded the lobby and gym and added a new adult-only pool - all positive enhancements.

We spent equal time on the beach and at the pool. In years' past, it was difficult getting a palapa on the beach or a bimini at the pool, but we had no problems this year. Don't forget to bring your pool floats or buy them locally as they're fun to use on the lazy river.

We have a list of our favorite restaurants and they did not disappoint. Visit Smokey Joes for some of the best ribs. There is a wonderful crepe stand at the Hacienda Mall that makes delicious breakfast and dessert specialties. Go to Gianni's for a terrific Italian dinner. Try the
Fettucine Alfredo that they prepare in front of you in a flaming cheese ring. If you want something eclectic try Yemanja Woodfired Grill in Oranjestad, behind the Renaissance Hotel.

We tried something different for this visit, we took an island four-wheeler tour from DePalm. They take you to the natural pool and the remains of the natural bridge. The remainder of the four-hour tour is spent travelling on the beach, hills and rocks of Aruba. If you looking for a four-wheel adventure, we truly enjoyed ourselves.

We have been to other isles in the Caribbean, but the people of Aruba always make you feel welcome. Since it is outside the hurricane zone, you can visit the island at any time. We have never rented a car because the taxis are so reasonable.
