“This museum lover was delighted!”

I love museums and visit them everywhere I go, but this little gem was in a class of its own. While small, the exhibits were great and the personal tour by Tom Butterfield was outstanding. My daughter, who was with me, told our entire family that she thought I was going to burst with enjoyment.

We visited in late May and the gardens were also a treat.
Thank you!

“A real highlight of Bermuda”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 October 2013

Sometimes you can stay too long on a vacation, so on our last day, when we thought we had nothing left to see, we discovered Masterworks Museum. And what a great find it was! Masterworks is a very special little museum nurtured to life by Tom Butterfield. He is a native of Bermuda and takes great pride in his home. But it is his love of art that led to this little gem in the ocean. Masterworks is located in the lush Botanical Gardens, a short drive from the center of Hamilton. We arrived on a "free" Tuesday, and we were graciously welcomed by the receptionist. It has a small permanent collection, but as she explained, the current exhibit was the Charman Prize of local artists. The display was fabulous; clearly a vibrant, eclectic, adventurous group of artists reside on the tiny isle. The best part of our visit was the personal tour of the treasures hidden in the vault of the museum. Tom gave us a very special gift when he generously shared Homer, O'Keeffe, and other artists' work with us. It was a memorable visit and one of the highlights of our trip.

“A must-see in Bermuda”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2013

My wife and I were looking for something to do on a Tuesday when we had nothing planned and saw a posting of a free tour of this museum. It was a quick cab ride from Hamilton. We were early so the volunteer at the desk recommended that we pay a quick visit to Camden, the official residence of the Premier just next door. What a fabulous building with equally fabulous furnishings. We had a free personal tour of the house with a liveried guide. (This house is open only on Tuesdays and Fridays from 12 to 2.) Then back to the museum for another personal free tour with the curator. The works are, of course, Bermuda themed. We especially enjoyed the current display of photography in Bermuda through the years. The tour included a visit to the curator's workshop in the basement where we saw stored painting by Georgia O'Keefe and Winslow Homer. Fantastic!!

“A "gem" in the Gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2013

Masterworks is almost hidden away from public view in the Botanical Gardens and can easily be missed.

Search it out, as it is a lovely art museum at a ridiculously low entrance of $5. Tom & Elise have nurtured and developed the museum from the start, and rightly deserve praise for their efforts in bringing art associated with Bermuda to the public.

Tastefully put together, their are two main galleries and an excellent library area on the upper floor. The small retail area also has quality gifts for purchase. Visiting artists from around the world, spend time there and exhibit their work on Bermuda - usually for sale.

Having enjoyed the exhibits, spend a little time in the new cafe, or take a coffee outside and enjoy the peace and calm this area brings.

Difficult to imagine a more cost effective way of spending and hour or two in peaceful and enjoyable surroundings.

“A Bermuda Must See!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 October 2013

We have been visiting Bermuda for nearly 20 years and we did not know about this hidden gem until friends recently raved about the visit. We were a group of six and requested a tour. Elise Outerbridge, the Curator, happily showed us around. Elise has been there from the beginning 25 years ago and had so much fascinating tales to share! We all loved it! The works they have collected over the years are absolutely beautiful. Even the non art lovers in our group loved the experience. Homers Cafe, attached to the museum is a lovely place for coffee or lunch and great food. We came home and have since joined as members and we look forward to visiting each time we are in Bermuda.
