“20/20 in the 3w’s….”
Review of Kensington Oval

Although this iconic oval has had a major facelift in recent years and perhaps lost a bit of its original charm, I wanted to visit for my late father who loved cricket – I remember when I was as a young lad, Dad would stay up all night to watch our Aussies take on the West Indies…. Jump forward 20 years or so and my wife and I visited for the 20/20 final 2014 between Spartan and Wanderers. Earlier, we were out exploring Bridgetown – word to the wise, don’t bother doing this on a Sunday – it is like a ghost town as most are in church or at home. We decided just to walk the couple of km’s to the ground to get some exercise. Oddly, it is in a heavily industrial area of town so there were really no shops open save for the service station across the road. There are a couple of bars down by the marina though these were closed also. So we pretty much had about 3-4 hours doing nothing before the game started in the early evening. Once finally inside, the 3W's stand (the only one in use for this game) started filling up and we grabbed a few banks beers and some chicken & chips and took our seats. It gets pretty lively as the locals obviously take their cricket very seriously. It was a decent game under lights with Spartan ending comfortable victors.

Being Americans we wanted to tour the Kensington Oval to see what Cricket is such a big deal in Barbados. We made the mistake of walking to the the Oval (the first time) from downtown Bridgetown. Upon arrival we asked to for a tour, but they were closed due to a match in progress. We were able to take in the HCP vs Bangladesh in a four day test. Ticket prices were cheap and seating was abundant. The food was good, but nothing special.

We went back for the last day of the test and took a cab from Bridgetown (well worth it) the only lament is that the gift shop didn't carry any West Indies gear, just left over goods from the WE v THEM series against England. All in all it was an excellent facility and a match is a great respite from the sun and sand of Barbados.

Great ground, very cheap entry ticket prices and good prices on food and drink. The match we saw was in the evening so much of the ground was not open , so it lacked very slightly in atmosphere, but it gave us a real taste of banana cricket

My wife and I decided not to miss the opportunity to visit the Kensington Oval while we were doing a tour of Barbados when our cruise ship was in the Bridgetown harbour. One can also walk there from the cruise terminal that is only about 15 minutes away.
Although we were not able to experience the exciting atmosphere of attending a match, it was still a good experience to visit the Kensington Oval cricket grounds. Our country has played several matches there against one of our big rivals, the West Indies. We were just too late for the West Indies against England in the T20 series.

The place is in the middle of a busy street junction and has an impressive statue of Sir Garfield Sobers at the entrance. He is widely considered one of cricket's greatest all-rounders. There are Kensington Oval Guided Tours which you can take as well, although time did not allow us to do one. At least we could take pictures at the road side sign which says "Kensington Oval".
We also visited their Cricket Museum & Gallery across the road where we were able to purchase some cricket souvenirs.
I wore a South African cricket shirt during our visit and was very pleased about all the positive comments from locals who all just wanted to chat about cricket.
