“Superb hotel with outstanding staff”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

Spent our second week of of our honeymoon here and we were extremely impressed. The hotel is immaculate and every single member of staff works incredibly hard to answer any guest queries or book taxis.
Lovely front room type seating area with sofas for afternoon tea. Such a relaxed atmosphere.
Fantastic and varied breakfast with more than just the usual options. Really enjoyed having the dumplings and plantain for breakfast.
The massages and facials in the spa were also absolutely fantastic.
We absolutely adored watching the sun go down each evening and being able to swim in the beautiful clear sea each day.
Barbados is a stunning island that leaves a very lasting impression. Truly hope to be lucky enough to return one day.

Dear SGLondon1984,

Thank you so much for your kind words regarding your recent stay with us at The House. We truly appreciate your compliments.

It is wonderful to hear that you so enjoyed your stay, especially the delicious meals it sounds like you were served. Additionally, we have to agree that there is no better way to watch the sunset than on the deck at The House.

Thank you again and we truly hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

This hotel suited us perfectly. It's small ( about 30 rooms) and right on the beach, which is wonderful. There's no competition for sun beds - we could come down to the beach at any time of the day and easily find a sun bed. The hotel's standard of service is very high. The rooms (ocean view suite) was excellent, being well appointed and comfortably air conditioned. There's a small pool but with the sea right there (calm, right temperature) I can't imagine why anybody would want with the pool. Apart from the generous range of (free) water sports, are no real "things to do" at the hotel, nor arranged entertainment, which again meant it was peaceful and what we wanted. It's adult only and seems to attract a good type of visitor (quiet, respectful etc). I would normally include a few negatives with my hotel reviews, but it is really hard in this case. Possibly the only thing I would say if that the (free) wi-fi was generally slow, although that might just be because everybody was using it at the same point of day.

We visited The House for our 3rd wedding anniversary. When we arrived we were greeted by the lovely staff. We were given a welcome cocktail and checked in. We had booked an ocean view suite which is recommended. The views are beautiful. Throughout our stay all the staff were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts were excellent with a glass of champagne. Cold drinks and ice cream were served to you on your sunbed every day and afternoon tea was lovely. Would highly recommend this hotel and we can't wait to return.

Room Tip: Ocean view suite, 2nd or 3rd floors.

We stayed at the House on the 2nd leg of our honeymoon. Rocky start, we reserved an ocean view room they overbooked and put us in a garden view suite. This was very upsetting but the staff there was very helpful and nice. They were able to move us to an ocean front room the next day. It is a small quiet boutique hotel, nice and quiet and relaxing. Breakfast is included. It was nice that through your the day they stopped by and offered ice tea, water, ice cream. I believe we were the only Americans there on our visit mostly English, so they have tea time daily. Included massage was heavenly. Everyone that works there is just wonderful. Drinks at sunset are a MUST, the views are just absolutely breathtaking!

Dear nyc1acc,

We are very pleased to hear that your honeymoon was a delight, despite a minor setback. I am happy to hear that you were immediately attended to as well.

It’s lovely that you were able to experience some of our English customs, such as the afternoon tea! And we must agree, the drinks at sunset are not to be missed.

We look forward to your return in the near future.

I just returned from a great "girls weekend away" at The Hotel on Paynes Bay. There were four of us, and we all thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing stay at the hotel. The hotel is definitely adults only and only two are allowed to a room. My daughter and I shared a one bedroom oceanview on the third floor. Our unit contained a large livingroom, two separate balconies and two full baths, each with a bath/shower combo, the shower having numerous nozzles and jets. Our other two travel companions shared a junior suite oceanview. I read the Tripadvisor reviews prior to planning this trip, especially the ones that expressed concerns. And yes, I agree the air conditioning unit in the bedroom can be annoying. While the champagne breakfast buffet may have been somewhat mundane (the basics of most buffets), I did like that the some of the hot items changed daily and included some local fare: plaintains, or curried chicken, or flying fish. I also thought an egg station that went beyond the typical omelet/scrambled/or boiled egg choice was a nice touch. Rarely have I had a buffet that included eggs benedict as a choice at the egg station. On the day of our arrival, the chef planned a seven course tasting meal for dinner which was quite delicious. He even came out and mingled with the guests.
Many have lauded the attention of the Ambassadors, and I wholeheartedly agree. All of the Ambassadors are amiable and helpful. It was slow time at the hotel and perhaps they had more opportunities to interact with guests and helpful. Most impressive is their ability to engage guests in conversation. Most hotels instruct the staff to at least say "good morning" or "good evening" and that's about as conversant as they get. The Ambassadors that work the open areas are able to draw guests in conversation if so desired or know when to leave the guest alone. Without taking away from the service provided by all, I especially want to cite Vannitta, Christopher, Kerrie, Andrew, Rawl, Andrew as examples of the fine service provided by the Ambassadors. My friends and I, probably known by them as "the ladies from California," truly appreciated our interactions with them and their service to us. One another note, I would like to make two observations that are not under the control of the hotel but worth noting since they did contribute to our experience:
First Observation: I rated the hotel a 3 for location even thought it does not necessarily control where it is built. The hotel is on the west coast of the island which is also known as the "platinum" coast. The restaurants in the vicinity are also upscale with upscale prices. If you are looking for less expensive restaurants with perhaps more local fare, you have to travel to other parts of the island which necessitates a cab fare. While I understand that if one chooses an upscale hotel, one should expect restaurants in the area to reflect this. However, my friends and I did not want to be prisoner to the hotel and its vicinity, we also wanted an opportunity to sample some of the restaurants where the average Bajan might go. We did go to Fish Fry on a Friday night in the village of Oistins which definitely provides a variety of opportunities to sample authentic Bajan dishes and a chance to mingle with hundreds of local residents (note; if you do not like crowds or noise got to Oistins on a weekday)
Second observation: We were there August 14-18. This was a very slow time on the island with not many tourists. That is both a plus and a minus. The minus side is that many establishments are closed for renovation (to prepare for high season in November/December) and/or have truncated hours. For example, I was highly disappointed to learn my favorite restaurant in Barbados, Pisces, was closed for renovations during my recent stay.
All in all I would return to The House and encourage others to stay. I can only attest to the experience my friends and I had, and it was not colored by free drinks, ice cream or massages. I guess I would say different strokes for different folks! We had a totally positive experience. Thank you Ambassadors and all at The House and the citizens in Barbados for contributing to a great girls weekend away!

Room Tip: I was on third floor in Room 363, a one bedroom oceanview in corner. Had total view of ocean from b...

Dear Sandra R.,

We thank you for your lovely review of your girls’ weekend and are so pleased you spent it with us at The House.

Thank you for highlighting many of our favorite aspects of our hotel, including our delicious eggs benedicts, always an excellent choice for breakfast. Additionally, I will pass on your specific thanks to Vannitta, Christopher, Kerrie, Andrew Rawl, and Andrew with the message that “the ladies from California” wrote about them.

It’s great to hear that you were able to try out some of our local favorites – Oistin’s being one of them – despite your favorite being under renovation. Hopefully next time it will be better than ever.

We look forward to your return in the near future.

Sincerely,

Elegantly calm, comfortable rooms, charming and attentive staff, beautiful location, great access to watersports, and restaurants. Some nice touches - tasting evenings, drinks receptions, BBQs and Movie Night on the made for some lovely evenings, but spotting flying fish skipping over the water at breakfast was a highlight!

If you are looking to relax, in a place that quickly feels like home, then this is it!
