“Many good points. Shame about the food.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2008

We were not impressed on our first night at this hotel. We arrived 3.45pm and our room was not ready until 4.15pm. Extraordinarily late I feel. Seems to me that over the years access to hotel rooms has got later and later but this seems ridiculous.
There was a BBQ the night we arrived so we thought we'd stay for it. Unfortunately we found the food very poor and the atmosphere in the 'Lanterns by the sea' noisy and down market. Not a good start and infact I wondered whether I could stand it for a full week. However things improved greatly after a night's sleep and we ended up having a wonderful holiday though that wasn't entirely due to the hotel.

Let me explain . I liked the following aspects...

*the well equipped rooms. We had a deluxe suite which had a well equipped kitchen living area, separate bedroom and large
balcony and plenty of storage space.

* the beach was lovely and there were more than enough sunbeds for everyone anytime of day. You could ask for sun umbrellas if you failed to get the shaded positions, at no extra cost.

* the pools were not too crowded except about 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

*the stroll every morning into the St Lawrence gap area along the beach was just the right length - not too taxing ,but we always got a taxi at night.

*the fact that we could make our own breakfast and lunch if we were so inclined. We enjoyed a few take- aways with wine on the balcony lunch time because we ate out every evening in the Gap.

We were a little put out by the list of rules in the room information book. Maybe they 've had bad experiences but I really don't need to be told not to do the things they listed.

I thought the food in the hotel was of a poor standard. Hardly anyone ate in and the re was not atmosphere at night that would tempt you to stay. Don't have a meal plan at this hotel. There are fanastic eating places in the Gap. We tried

Josef's --first class food but little atmosphere and a disappointing setting. Expensive. Probably wouldn't go again.

Pisces--excellent food and atmosphere; lovely setting. Worth the money. Definitely worth another visit

Bellini's -excellent food, setting and atmosphere. Well worth a visit

39 Steps Lovely meal but a bit far from base to go to often

Cafe luna- one of the best meals I've ever had..... but pricey. Still I would return to this restaurant many times.

At the end of our stay we had to agree that we had had an amazing holiday, eating food cooked to the highest standard.....but not in the hotel.

We would however still return to the Bougainvillea using it as a base as the accommodation itself was spacious and well equipped

We have just returned from the Bougainvillea Beach Resort in Barbados where we spent 2 weeks with friends and family. we got married in the beautiful gardens overlooking the beach and we couldnt have asked for more. Our wedding coordinator Veronica was fabulous. The beach is one of the best on the Island .An ideal spot to stay as St Lawrence gap is near by with some of the best restaurants I have eaten in the world. Our accomodation was OK but the bathroom could have done with a make over. Saying that all the other rooms that our friends had were lovely. The pool area was very nice and just a step to the beach. The pool bar would be better with more staff with a fun personality except for Roxy who was lovely and always happy to see you.The bell boys were great and always happy. Most of the girls on reception were very nice maybe one or two could smile a bit more. The restaurant Lanterns by the sea could have been better. It was a bit hit and miss. Overall we had a fabulous holiday and would definitely visit the Bougainvillea again in the near future. Stephanie from UK

This is a wonderful resort that we thoroughly recommend in line with other reviewers. Good things: wonderful beach, high quality rooms with spacious balconies, beautifully landscaped grounds with flowers, waterfalls and pools, excellent service. All is clean and immaculately looked after. Please take the following quibbles in the light of this - we would happily stay there again.

1) We choose this resort as it had a kids club but this only runs if enough children sign up and this doesn't always happen. This makes it hard to plan trips and activities as you never know if you will have your children with you or not until the morning. This is an advertised service and they ought to offer it regardless.

2) The food at the Lanterns restaurant is really not good - such a shame as everything else is of such a high standard and the restaurant setting is perfect.

3) Check in is not until 4 o'clock and most flights get guests there for around two o'clock and are asked to just sit around for two hours - this is totally unacceptable given how exhausted you feel after a trans-atlantic flight - and very hard on small children. Make sure you insist your room is ready for you on arrival.

These things didn't ruin a wonderful holiday though so don't let us put you off!

The Bougainvillea is a stunning hotel set in beautiful grounds on the South Coast of Barbados. My partner and I usually stay in 4 star hotels and this was marked a 3 star on a few websites…However this is definitely a 4 star !

From the minute we arrived we were greeted with bajan humour from the staff and given a rum punch and then shown to our room. We booked a deluxe studio and were more than happy with our room. The room was very clean and spacious and the balcony had a stunning view of the ocean. We stayed for 10 nights and had a ball! We were looking for a beach holiday but with activities if we fancied it. The beach is stunning and there is plenty of room to sunbathe without been cramped. Sometimes the ocean is rough as the hotel is located on the Atlantic side but it didn’t bother us….as there are nice pools to swim in at the hotel.

The staff are so friendly especially ROXY at the pool bar. All the staff take time to speak to you and are always eager to help.
There are two restaurants at the hotel. Lanterns which serves Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner & Water’s Edge which just serves Dinner. Lanterns was great for a buffet breakfast & lunch but we felt it lacked atmosphere at night. However they do a (take out) option and as our balcony was so big and had a lovely view we decided to eat in a few nights . We didn’t try Water’s Edge but it did look pricey. Pretty much every night we would get a cab to St Lawrence’s Gap (5-10 mins) which was a bay with restaurants on the water’s edge. We tried the majority of the restaurants there and loved them all. Pisces, Café Sol, Bellini’s & Harlequin were fantastic. The only negative with the hotel is there is a lack of bar area in the evenings. But as we would be in St Lawrence’s gap the majority of the time it really didn’t bother us.

Whilst we were there we did a Catamaran ride to swim with the turtles. This was on the Cool Running’s boat it was a fantastic day out and the staff were excellent. Bridgetown the capital is worth a visit too.

We don’t usually do write up’s on places we have stayed as the majority of people that write these moan about the springs in the beds. But please LISTEN to this review as we have visited many countries and were so pleased with our stay at the Bougainvillea Resort. We are already thinking about going next year.

One more thing enjoy the rum punch it’s delicious!!

Had 12 days at the end of January 2008. First time we had had a family holiday for 10 years, so had superior suite on 4th floor. As our kids are 27 and 23, the double pullout bed was supplemented by a single cot which was brought to our room within 5 minutes of suggesting same.

Room was well looked after, throughly cleaned each day and stocked with the welcome pack we ordered a week before arriving.

Bell boys were great and verfy helpfull. They took an interest
( maybe it was our 23 year old daughter? ) without being too matey.
The gilrs in reception and the waitresses were , without exception, efficient, friendly and professional.

The quality of the gym, sports room, beach sports equipment was very good. The one day trip we went on organised by the hotel ( swimming with turtles, snorkelling the wrecks off Bridgetown ) lasted from 8 til 12-30 and was far better than the similar mass groups sailing from Bridgetown. There were just 4 of us plus the captain.

Had 1 trip to Barbados golf club, 5 minutes by car. Excellent facilities, well worth it .

Car hire was fine, they came to the hotel, thje car was brand new BUT, beware. Road signs away from the main highway are almost non-existent. We drove to the East CoaST and it took us 2 hours to get to BATHSHEBA but only 35 minutes back.

All the locals were VERY friendly, stopping to ask if you had had a good holiday, stopping to let you cross the road even away from Crossings. Brilliant!! We walked back to the hotel a couple of nights arounfd midnight along the beach. There were 4 of us, and my 27 year old son is a weight-lifter but we were not in the slightest bit concerned.

The Gap has a great selection of restaurants. david's place took pride of place for us. Harlequin is run by a Reading FC fan and he added $1000 to our bill as I had a Bolton Wanderers Golf shirt on ... but didnt insist we pay the exess!!! Brilliant They had the best vegetarian choice.

Apart from flying Economy ( which coming back was awful for 2 six footers who cant sleep on planes) the whole experience was wonderful. You can see most of the island's highlights over 4 or 5 days by car which leaves a good week to relax , swim, etc. We visited a couple of really good hotels but , none had the super atmosphere Bougainvillea did and I'd certainly stay there again if we ever go back.

Just returned from a wonderful 10 day break, this was our fourth trip to Barbados and our first stay at the Bouganvillia, we will definately return to this hotel.
The beach is beautiful, the chidren loved the pool & gardens, the staff are all very friendly and the hotel is very clean and well kept. The rooms are spacious and the view from our balcony was wonderful.
The location is good for making the most of Barbados, two trips that stood out were horseriding with the OceanEchoes stables and Zeds surfing lessons, both highly recommended.
We have previously stayed at an 'all inclusive' hotel and know the west coast very well but, for us, the the beaches and waves of the south coast are more attractive and the flexibility of the Bouganvillia was ideal.
Looking forward to visiting this lovely hotel again and catching up with the friends we made there.

We travelled with two of our daughters (15 & 17) and stayed in studios. The hotel has a great position next to the beach and it is very pretty. It has good room facilities and although there are lots of sporting facilities listed, due to the height of the surf some of these are not very feasible and some are not free.

The children’s playroom is buried in the bowls of the hotel and was completely empty. Games such as pool etc. are chargeable and would be very popular if they were free.

Both restaurants were very quiet and almost empty by 8:30pm. Lanterns by the Sea was OK but not great. Lunchtimes seemed to be busiest with takeaways popular for the beach. The weekly BBQ was good but evening entertainment generally suffered from lack of atmosphere. We dinned out most evenings and particularly liked Bellinis Italian Restaurant at St. Lawrences Gap for outstanding pasta dishes.

Budget15 BBDs to St Laurence Gap, 20 to Oistins and 35 to Bridgetown each way for taxis.

We tried the island tour, catamaran day trip, Atlantis Submarine and Scuba Diving and all were excellent. The catamaran anchors for lunch at the beach next to the 5 star Sandy Lane Hotel and you can swim to shore after eating.

If we visited Barbados again, we would probably go all inclusive to the west coast for a quieter ocean to swim in and ability to make full use of sporting facilities. Also the general area is prettier than the South Coast region.
