“Friendly and Relaxing”
Reviewed 8 May 2014

I stayed here for ten days with my husband and ten year old twin boys. I chose it after many months of poring over Trip Advisor reviews, with the goal of picking a hotel that would be a perfect fit for my family. Happily, Bougainvillea lived up to my expectations.

The staff here is very friendly and helpful. When we checked in we were upgraded to a deluxe suite from a regular one bedroom suite, which has never happened to me before, so I was thrilled! The suite was large (lots of storage space -- what a change from Disney last year!), pretty, and had a nice view of the main pool area and the ocean. The balcony had a large two tier drying rack for the towels and bathing suits which was a great, always in use touch.

I absolutely loved the beach and pool areas. One of the things that I avoid like the plague are resorts that have limited loungers and umbrellas at the beach and pool. I DO NOT want to line up to reserve a palapa for the next day, or get up early to put my belongings on lounge chairs to reserve them, etc. when I'm on vacation. This place actually has signs saying that you can't reserve chairs like that! Whenever you arrive at the beach, you can grab your lounge chairs, drag them over to wherever you want them, and then the nice guy at the watersports desk will come over and set up large umbrellas for you (one umbrella for every two lounge chairs, which was fine -- the umbrellas are huge). Perfect -- we can relax in the mornings and take our time getting to the beach, because we know that they'll have plenty of spots for us.

We had a rental car to explore the island, so ate most of our dinners out. We had breakfast at Lanterns and lunch at the pool bar frequently, though. The food was good, reasonably priced and with very friendly service. They are a bit on "island time," but that's what you're here for, to slow down a bit.

The ocean was perfect for my boys when there were no flags -- waves to play in, but not overpowering at all. We did have four red flag days (no swimming in the ocean -- just dip your feet in the edge) and one yellow flag day (don't go out too far). So, definitely take advantage of the ocean when there's no flags. That includes jet ski rentals; my husband and boys had a great time on the jet ski. Thankfully they took advantage early, because later on in the week the flags were up and so jet ski rentals were off limits to anyone who didn't have a lot of experience, or were taking kids, etc.

Overall, we had a wonderful time in Barbados. Beautiful, friendly island with lots to do and good restaurants a five minute drive away from Bougainvillea in the St. Lawrence Gap. Bougainvillea had everything I was looking for in a family resort.

My husband and I stayed at Bougainvillea for 7 nights in April of 2013. It was our honeymoon (we're in our late 20's) and after doing a little research we decided to stay at Bougainvillea. We booked our trip through American Airlines Vacations and I can honestly say the entire experience was wonderful. We arrived late Sunday night and were greeted with smiling faces and friendly accents (oh, those beautiful accents!). We were shown to our room (a Junior Suite) and were pleasantly surprised at the size and cleanliness. It was a perfect mix of modern amenities and the beach vibe that we were looking for. The kitchen was an added plus as we loved being able to self cater a bit. That night (and every night in Barbados) we fell asleep to the relaxing noise of frogs and waves. It was just divine.

The next morning we had the buffet breakfast, which we loved. It was a great way to start out our trip. What a way to wake up...sitting right next to the beach and enjoying a beautiful breeze with great food. We had breakfast there at least 2 more times. We also really enjoyed the beach and in particular, the boogie boards. We spent at least a few hours every day swimming and playing in Maxwell Beach and it was definitely one of our favorite beaches we visited during our stay. The pools were great as well and I can still hear the beautiful noise of the happy hour bell...So much fun! Oh, the rum punch! The bartenders were so friendly and we honestly felt sad when we had to leave them. They became friends by the end of our trip.

All in all, I can't say enough about this place. We aren't big travelers, but Bougainvillea and Barbados had such an impact on us, we've booked an anniversary trip for the second week of July. We're counting down the days until we're back (59!). Go here.

My first time in Barbados was truly a memorable one especially staying at this resort. The views were breathtaking and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The rooms are island themed and the back patio were footsteps direcly to the ocean. Hearing the howling wind and crashing waves made it a truly unforgettable experience. Definitley will visit again!! Thank you for such great service! NAR

We have been timeshare owners here since 1995, so I suppose our views are more than a bit biased, but our annual stay at this delightful property is always the highlight of our year. I cannot imagine what the expectations of those who give Bougainvillea Resort a poor review must be! Staff are invariably warm and friendly and the rooms and common areas are always spotless. We just returned from our "second home" and are already looking forward to 2015

It is a fine hotel, but, as most of the things on Barbados, it is overrated. On arrival we were surprised to see that the hotel is quite different from what we imagined based on the photos published at the hotel's page. The hotel appeared to be way smaller and elder then featured on the photos.

On the plus side, the rooms in the hotel, as well as the territory of the hotel, are very clean. The rooms are very spacious and contain all the amenities you need, including the kitchen appliances. The beach is nicely maintained and supplied with sufficient amount of sunbeds, which renders the traditional sport of going to the beach early morning before breakfast to occupy a sun bed unnecessary.

We don't want to come us picky, but we can't agree with all these reviews appraising the service in the hotel as impeccable. Yes, the staff is generally friendly and customer oriented, but you would expect it from a hotel that charged 259 euro per night. Sometimes the service was quite slow and not so professional.

On the down side, the interior of the hotel, as well as the rooms, looks somewhat tired.. The food served in the 2 restaraunts of the hotel was a disappointment. It was pricy and not appetising.

Eventhough the beach adjoining the hotel is very nice and clean, it has one of the strongest undercurrents among the beaches of the southern Barbados. So if you don't like rough waters and want to enjoy calm sea, you may want to look for another hotel.

Maybe it was about the season (mlMarch) but somehow the average age of the hotel's visitors during our stay was about 60+. Not that we had any problem with that, but this is still something to take into account while opting for the hotel (especially if you have a young spirit (no matter the age) and are up to some action). Not sure about other months, but in march when we were there the hotel was always way too quite and all the services seemed to be tailored to senior tourists, not the ones younger than 30-40.

In sum, it is a OK hotel, but you may be better off looking for something with a better price pet quality ratio.

Thank you for your feedback. As always, we will continue to work to improve as it is our goal to deliver the best vacation that we can to all of our guests.

We do welcome guests of all ages and have never really had this perceived as a negative. Perhaps there were more mature guests during your stay but certainly the average age range can change from week to week. Similarly, with the ocean, while it was a bit rough while you were here, right now, it is much calmer and it will be like that more and more as we head into the summer – we’re sorry that it wasn't that way for you.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon here in April 2013 and it was wonderful. We decided we must go back for our 1st anniversary. We did just that in April 2014 and did not regret a single moment. We selected the All Inclusive option this time around. From the moment we arrived at reception we were promptly attended to and all of our All Inclusive options were explained to us. The room was spacious and very clean as usual. The view was spectacular with both pool and ocean in sight. We had dinner at Lanterns which was very tasty every time we ate there. The breakfast buffet at Lanterns is also nice with plenty options and of course there is the omelet station where Marion will prepared your omelet on the spot with the toppings you choose.

Our favorite spot for was the Pool Bar where you can either sit poolside or swim up whilst in the pool. Here we met Roxanne and Jose Manuel who are fantastic bartenders, warm, courteous, friendly, funny and our new friends. Lunch can be ordered at the Pool bar and came from Lanterns restaurant as well and this was great. Our kids absolutely enjoyed the kids pool and the pizza and couldn't stop talking about it.

We had dinner one night at Water's Edge restaurant which was just okay and the wait for food was way too long! The dessert was great and service was okay.

Overall we had a wonderful time and will surely return and maybe make this resort our anniversary spot for years to come.

Thank you for choosing Bougainvillea for your honeymoon. We recently introduced our all-inclusive option, so it’s great to hear that you overall you enjoyed you dining with us, though we have noted your constructive feedback on Water’s Edge.

Roxanne and Jose Manuel and of course Marion and her omelets are fantastic – we will be sure to share your kind words with them. Thank you again for taking the time to post and we look forward to welcoming you back on your first anniversary.

I was somewhat apprehensive when I booked this resort, thinking it might not be as nice as others we have stayed at previously. It's very competitively priced and has an extremely good tripadvisor rating so I went ahead and booked here.

First impressions were great because it is a very pretty resort with lovely gardens and lush plantings. We arrived at reception and were offered rum punches and banana bread. Very attentive staff looked after our luggage and showed us to our room. Oh dear, that's when I began to regret my decision to book here. The room we were shown was not the superior studio I had booked, but a one bedroom suite, in fact, an upgrade. But I did not like the suite, it was on the ground floor and had a dated look. Back to reception where the manager Leena offered to show us several other room types in different parts of the resort. We looked at a couple and decided on a Junior suite on the 3rd floor. It had a good ocean view and I liked being higher up.

The suite was very comfortable and nicely furnished. The bed was extremely comfortable with good linens. Bathroom was OK, it did have a nice rainshower in the tub. The kitchen in this unit was very small with only a hotplate but it was adequate. It had an older style coffee percolator rather than a coffeemaker which I really feel they should replace. You will be given 2 beach towels which you must turn in at the end of your stay or be charged for them. They can be replaced at the beach hut for fresh ones every day.

This is the south coast which has bigger waves and you will be tossed around in the water. Several days during our week the red flags were out which means do not go in the ocean. We found this disappointing but as we had a car we just drove to Carlisle Bay beach which has the lovely calm water.

We had several breakfasts and dinners at Lanterns By the Sea, the onsite restaurant. The food was good but not outstanding, although my husband had Mahi Mahi which he thought was the best he'd eaten on the island. We had afternoon tea one day at the other restaurant which is called Water's Edge. The service was unaccountably poor and the food really average. There was no one else eating there and it took us over an hour to get our food.

The staff at this resort are really wonderful and especially Leena, the manager, who went out of her way to ensure that we were happy with our accommodation.

The beach and gardens here are really lovely and we enjoyed our week very much. We've always stayed on the west (Platinum) coast on previous holidays but this was a nice change and I think we would stay here again.

Room Tip: We much preferred the west side of the resort and would book that side again.
