“Relaxed Caribbean hotel.”
Reviewed 28 July 2014 via mobile

We spent two weeks at Bougainvillea earlier this month, lovely hotel with very friendly staff who were great with our 18 month old. We were upgraded from a junior suite to a 1 bedroom suite on arrival which was ideal, lots of space for the little one to run around and the kitchen gave us lots of freedom for meals. The hotel isn't big and glitzy, it has a relaxed Caribbean feel to it which is very welcoming. We were on the ground floor which was good considering we had a small child and a buggy. Note, there are no lifts. The children's playroom was useful as it gave us somewhere the small one could play out of the sun, a few more toys might be handy though. Proper cots and high chairs are provided which makes life much more comfortable for small children.

We ate in the restaurant quite often but the menu is limited and let's the hotel down, this needs improvement. The BBQ nights were good though.

The hotel isn't the most convenient if you want to get a few groceries, the shop 2mins along the road was closed (looked like it was being demolished) and the next one is a 10 min walk along the beach and through the back of the next hotel. Supermarket in Worthing is about $45BDS return and the driver will wait for you.

If you are happy with a few long'ish walks or getting taxis everywhere it's fine, we hired a car for a few days which gave us much more freedom. Oistins is a short taxi ride and a must for the fish fry, lobster!! :-)

The beach is great, white sand, plenty of sun loungers and not busy. Very relaxing just wandering along the beach! One point to note, the beaches on the south coast can be quite rough, generally too rough for young children. Further west is much much calmer. Swimming pools were good if a little small.

We stayed for 5 nights in early July. We knew the hotel would not be hugely luxurious but hoped it would be clean, have good staff, provide beautiful surroundings and have a great beach. It ticked all those boxes.

The staff were very attentive and friendly. The room we had was clean, well maintained, large (well equipped and large kitchen) if a tiny bit tired (quite normal of mid range Barbados properties). We did not eat at the hotel but the menus looked good and decent value. The pools are really pleasant and the swim up bar is a good place to meet people at 'happy hour'.

The beach is the star of the show. Great white powdery sand and manageable waves most days.

The location is roughly halfway between Oistins and St Lawrence Gap. Ideally you would want a car but a taxi is about 6-7 quid each way, so not expensive. Oistins is a must for fresh, flavoursome and cheap food.

This place provides a great base for exploring the south if you have a car. We thoroughly recommend it.

Just returned from 2 weeks at the Bougainvillea Beach resort. We stayed in a Junior suite on the third floor and had a wonderful sea view from our balcony. The room was just the right size with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. There was a small kitchen which comprised of the basics you would need to cook a meal, a microwave, fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle, two ring hot stove. We prepared breakfast and a couple of simple lunches in the room but I would not want to cook a proper meal to be honest. The room was cleaned spotlessy every day. The rooms are fairly basic and I do think that some of the furniture could do with being updated but for what we paid, I think we got good value plus we are hardly ever in the room anyhow.

The beach is absolutely stunning and we spent our days lazing around listening to the crashing waves. The sea was a fantastic turquoise and if you walk the beach you will notice if you look closely there are pink speckles in the sand...truly beautiful. There was also a nice breeze on the beach, the waves were quite big but we were lucky and only had the red flag once for a couple of hours.

If I am honest, I didnt really find the pools too inviting, we only went in once. The pool is very small and there are lots of leaves and flowers floating about even though it is cleaned every day.

We visited Lanterns on two occasions for dinner, the first night as we were extremely tired after the journey, the food was superb as was the service. The second time however, I chose the Lasagne and there was hardly any meat in it, I did mention it but just got a "sorry" the waitress must had clearly seen that I had hardly eaten any of it as it was just a mass off lasagne sheets with a teaspoon of mince! few days later at lunch (which was always good) I witnessed a Bajan family whose daughter didnt like two dishes that she ordered...they were promptly changed, the staff went out of their way to make sure she enjoyed her dinner....I wished I had made more of a fuss.

This hotel has no nightlife whatsoever, they do have a couple of BBQ's which we didn't attend but spoke to people who did and they said it wasn't worth going too. If it rains which it did on two or three occasions, there is nowhere to go apart from your room. The only bar is the pool bar and there is a bar attached to the other restaurant that was also outside plus rarely open. The night we went to Lanterns for the Lasagne, the rain was torrential and we got caught in it trying to get to the restaurant, an umbrella in the room wouldnt go amiss! my husband had to run back as thankfully the rain slowed down and change his shirt as he was drenched. Sadly whilst we were eating the torrential rain returned, my biggest gripe is that there is no toilet in Lanterns...you have a short 2 minute walk outside...so when it is lashing down, you get soaked. This hotel is definately not geared up for rain.

Also, be aware that the convenience store that is situated a five minute walk away has shut down and the nearest shop is about a 20 minute walk.

Overall, we had a relaxing holiday and the Bajans are lovely helpful friendly people. This hotel is a nice base for a holiday but it is deffo not for socialising...to do that, you will need to go out.

Thank you for taking the time to review. We appreciate your feedback and especially love your vivid description of our beautiful beach.

We would like to apologise if we missed the mark on your second dinner at Lanterns. All of our guests are important to us and we do try to resolve any issues to their satisfaction.

Bathrooms in the immediate beach/Lanterns area are a priority for us as well and I just want to assure you that this is one of many property enhancements that are being planned for the future. Some of the enhancements are due to happen quite soon – so please give us another look before you plan your next trip to Barbados!

We do understand your point regarding nightlife. We offer entertainment a few nights each week but for those seeking more, St. Lawrence Gap – one of the nightlife hubs on the island, is conveniently just 5 minutes drive from the hotel.

Finally, we are happy to say that the nearby convenience store is just temporarily closed. It is currently being renovated and once completed, will be reopened.

Have just got back from a 2 week stay at Bougainvillea. We were originally booked at Amaryllis but got transferred to this hotel after the closure of Amaryllis was announced.
I requested a top floor ocean view room (was told all rooms are ocean view) which we got on arrival, we were also upgraded to a Junior suite. had a bit of trouble with the bed situation but this was soon sorted, nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff.
Pool and beach area were lovely, always plenty of sun beds and lots of sun and shady spots.
Food was spot on, couldn't fault it but for all inclusive the options did get a bit boring after 2 weeks. All the restaurant staff were lovely, so helpful and friendly.
I celebrated my birthday whilst in Barbados, the hotel staff made my day very special, i had balloons left in my room and also a gift which was a lovely touch. Then after lunch whilst we were in the pool, they bought me a piece of cake with a sparkler in and sang Happy Birthday to me - it was more than i expected.
Room was spotless, air con wasn't very good to start with but this was soon sorted once we reported it.
Spent our Friday nights at Oistins, its a must. Sunday nights in Holetown and also went to the Gap a few nights (which resulted in sore heads the next day)!! Everywhere is easy to access on the buses although we did hire a car for a few days.
I have been to Barbados many times before, first time at Bougainvillea and it did not disappoint. The worst day was the last day, having to pack up and leave paradise. We kept our room on which was really useful as we didnt get picked up until 4:30pm so it enabled us to have almost a full day in the sun and still get showered after.
Already planning our next trip, only thing id say is that Bougainvillea needs to look at their AI options a bit more. More buffet type meals would of been nice and had to sign for drinks on a daily basis, something i have never had to do before on an AI.
Apart from that, thank you to all at Bougainvillea who made our stay one to remember and also an amazing birthday. See you all soon :)

Room Tip: Top floor rooms are lovely for views but with no lifts make sure you are prepared for the 4 flights...

I went with my dad for a week to watch the West Indies V England games. We did share a room. Poor dad had to tolerate my snoring! Anyway... the review...

On arriving we were met with a welcome drink, it was very much appreciated!

The room we had was a good size with a kitchen, lounge area and a large twin kingsize beds.

We were overlooking the pool which was quite small but when you are on the beach why would you need a big pool!

Food prices were reasonable, the bajan fish was a delight! You can't beat eating breakfast/dinner overlooking the sea.

I would guess that the rooms were ex-timeshare but they did the job. The beds were very comfy as well.

Overall a fantastic time away, bar the cricket!

Bougainvillea Beach Resort was a great family getaway. The room was spacious, clean, decent decor and had everything we needed. We were lucky to get a first floor room, with its own patio pool that flowed out to a poolside waterfall. The pools were great, especially with waterfalls, and the warmer adults-only pool was delightful. The stoned- / pebbled-deck by the pools was coming loose and painful on the feet - bearable and not a real issue when we wore sandals. Free WiFi seems to be prevalent everywhere we go in Barbados - it was good quality at Bougainvillea. The games room had free basketball toss and ping pong, and some paid games that were all fun. The free water sports (kayak, paddle boat) seemed great but haven't tried (yet). Beach is lovely, clean, nice sand - but rough water for younger ones. Older and big kids love the waves!

We stayed here from July 4-12, and had a very relaxing stay. This was one of a few times we have not gone all inclusive, and are so thankful we didn't. It forces you to get out and off the resort to mingle with the locals. We met some wonderful people, some whom we will be keeping in touch with, even after our vacation ended.

You must go to Rude Boys Jerk Chicken Kitchen, which is above the Dover Beach Market store. It is on the 2nd floor. We vacationed in Jamaica the last two years, and chose Barbados this year to try somewhere different. We were able to get some authentic jerk chicken in Barbados! You will not be disappointed! Very friendly staff, great service, great food, and they made us feel part of the family. I think we ate dinner in Lanterns just our first night, as we had a 3 hour delay getting into Barbados, and we were just tired and didn't feel like going out.

Upon checkin, our room was upgraded, which was nice. It did not seem like there was many people there, and we never had to wait for a chair on the beach. Therre was always one available. We spent most of our time on the beach, rather than the pool. The next resort down, seemed to have a red flag quite often when we walked down there to get the the Gap. Yes, we walked. It's not that far to walk. It's quicker to walk via the beach, and then take the pathe up to the street level.

Would go back in a heartbeat. Very quiet, laidback, and relaxing vacation.
The waves were a little rough, nothing that kept us out of the water. In fact, we got a great work out swimming in them without any worry.
