Bougainvillea Beach Resort
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 13 April 2009

There are so many good reviews already written about this hotel and all well deserved. Here are a few highlights worth another mention.

Ted's Tours - Take this trip early on in your break. It gives a great overview of the island of where and what to do. All you have to do is put up with Ted's corny jokes all day! But they just made the day all the more enjoyable for us. The lunch that is included in this trip is also excellent.

Cool Runnings - Excellent tip. We took the 5hr morning one and the time flew by, so this may be a better option the the shorter sunset trip.

Bert's Bar in Worthing - This is about three quarters of an hour to walk from Bougainvillea. We returned one evening, using one of the No. 11 suicide waggons that will take you between Bridgetown and Oistens for BD1.50 per person per trip. Well worth the adrenalin trip!!! The pizza at Bert's is excellent. Watch out for the rum punch though, it's way stronger they any other we sampled on the island.

The supermarket in Oistens offers a shuttle bus back to the hotel, but I'm not sure if they have a minimum spend before you qualify for this. It's about a 10-15 minute walk, but feels a little further with shopping bags!

The Check-in Chill-out option the Virgin offer is excellent. Our cases were collected at 9:30am where we were given our boarding passes. We then we spent the rest of the morning around the pool/beach. Then made use of the hotel guest lounge(showers, shampoo, shower gel and clean towels all provided). We were collect at 2:30pm and taken to the airport 20mins away. We were then able to walk straight through to the airport shops and then on to the plane for the 4:45pm flight. No hassle!!!!

Enjoy!

Very pleasantly surprised. Fantastic Hotel. Very friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you. (as were the people in general in Barbados). Rooms and gardens very clean . At the end of the Bay so not really disturbed by Hawkers etc. A short walk one way to St Lawrence Gap and the other way to Oistins.
Oistins Fish Fry was fantastic fun, the Fish was to die for. Great atmosphere. Unfortunately the night we were there, there was a power cut over the Island at about 8.30 bringing our evening to an early close, but we had time enough to get the feel and the atmosphere of the place. Don't miss it.
Also if you like to mix with the locals I fully recommend Debbie's Bar (Rum shack). This is on the way to Oistins, just past the Supermarket (about a 15 min. walk from Hotel), here we sampled Mount Gay Rum, you buy by the bottle, not by a shot, (smallest bottles 200ml costing 9 EC$) and you can also buy and eat in or take away local food, eg. rice & peas, stewed chicken, macaroni pie etc. All the locals are in and out the whole time. You can spend as long as you like there, we arrived about 11.30 a.m. for drinking first and then eating. For 2 very generous meals and the small bottle of Rum it cost us 30 EC$ - this is less than one meal any where else which usually cost about 45-60 EC$. We went back a 2nd day.
For boat trips consider "Cool Runnings", this was arranged by the Hotel, perfection. Snorkelled with the Turtles. The staff on this Catamarran couldn't do enough for you, plently of lovely food and drink.

This was our second trip back to Barbados. We stayed at the Southern Palms on our first visit to Barbados and at the Bougainvillea Beach Resort on the second trip.

The Bougainvillea is a wonderful, relaxing resort with a beautiful beach and lots of amenities. There are two sides of the resort - one (nearest Reception) is much busier with lots of activity and hustle and bustle; whereas the other side is quieter and more charming w/ hammocks, lawn lounge space and a really nice grill for the customers to use on their own. The beach area nearest Reception was always very crowded w/ lots of kids in and around the area; whereas, the other side was calmer and quieter w/ less activity. The hotel offers a very nice, well-equipped gym facility w/ ellipticals, treadmills, weight training equipment, and etc. The Laundry facility was adequate and they even had a Library where you could exchange books. I did not use the Business Center; however, had Internet access in my room which worked extremely well (at no extra charge). And the hotel does charge for local calls, which we were a bit surprised to see especially since the Southern Palms did not. We were not impressed w/ the on-site restaurants. It seemed like they never had their act together. We thought about eating at Lanterns several times, but they never had their menu ready early enough for us to decide if we wanted to eat there or not. So we always made other plans. It also seemed like they were closed too often. We stopped in several times and were turned away.

Our hotel room was decent (no frills). We had a room w/ a kitchen. The kitchen equipment was adequate, but really needed to be updated. For example, there were no coated pans so we had to scrub the pans constantly of food. This is hard to do when you don't have pan scrubbing supplies. And some of the utensils didn't function properly (i.e. peeler and knives). We also didn't have any storage containers. I've stayed in hotels that had their kitchens better equipped. On the positive side, it was sufficient for most of our needs.

Overall, we really like this resort and would definitely stay here again if we were to return to Barbados. I would NOT recommend this resort for Singles and / or adults w/ children over the age of 16. It seemed like most of its customers were older (50's & 60's) or in their later 30's with young kids.

We have just returned from a brief , very enjoyable stay at the Bougainvillea. I can confirm all of the good things that have been said in previous reviews. The grounds are very attractive and well maintained. The resort is well staffed and all are conscientious. We appreciated the attention to detail, decor and cleanliness of the property .
The resort is well located at the end of a very nice beach. This means that it is fairly quiet. There are ample beach chairs and umbrellas. The beach area is safe, clean and great for kids and for relaxing on the sunchair.
We recommend the vans that pull up at lunch. It is a good, inexpensive way to enjoy Bajan food for lunch or save for dinner. The servings are very generous. We also recommend the walk into the Gap for the evening by way of the beach... take the pathway by the Dover Beach Hotel and then turn left. Coming back there are many taxis available.

Our room was clean and comfortable but was out done by the beach and gardens in terms of value for the cost.
We would come back, hope we do and would recommend to others.

1st time in Barbados. Booked Bougainvillea due to overall reviews to see Barbados, spend time on a beach and watch England attempt to play cricket.
Rooms are v spacious, service excellent and location superb. Clean towels every day and staff could not do more to help. Free wifi which was a plus. Quiet most evenings which suited us as you can go out if you want more but v relaxing for a quiet evening in. Restaurants and bar are ok but not special and quite pricey for what you get but the flexibility and location makes it great. Beach is fantastic with very few hawkers which if you are approached will go away with a polite 'no thank you'.
Tips: walk to St Lawrence Gap via beach before sunset - there is an alleyway adjacent to Dover Beach then get a taxi back, only takes 15 mins and watch the sunset over the sea. Also can easily walk to Oistins for Fri/Sat night again before it gets dark. Liked Margarets best for Kingfish.
Hire a jeep for a day - easy to get round island and do go to North coast caves and Bathsheba. Booked car through hotel - it was on last legs with dodgy tyre and worn gear box so would insist on one in better condition next time.

We have been visiting Barbados for more than 10 years. We have stayed at various hotels on the island, the last 3 years at Bougainvillea - and we love it. We feel comfortable there for many reasons. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained and the rooms are spacious and welcoming (most with kitchenettes for convenient meals). The staff is very friendly and always helpful from the bellmen and front desk staff checking in to the waterfront staff assisting with everything from towels and umbrellas to waterfront activities. There are several restaurants including the Water's Edge for convenient, casual dining right on the beach. The beach is amazing as are the three (3) pools on the grounds (1 with waterfalls, 1 with a swim-up bar). We have an 8 year old daughter who loves Barbados, and loves the Bougainvillea - she always makes friends and there is a kid center and a great indoor game room. This is a family friendly place but we have seen many weddings take place on the grounds as well and we see many happy, romantic couples. It is conveniently located for access to the shops and restaurants in St Lawrence Gap and Oistins. All in all, if you are ready to relax and lay back and enjoy Barbados, you cannot go wrong with this place.

We have visited Barbados seven times and this was our best hotel. We found our room was excellent and well kept. The staff were very friendly and professional. The beach was excellent and well looked after. We explore a lot and Bougainvillea was a great base for all our activities. We look forward to returning.
