“A disaster”
Reviewed 17 January 2014

We stayed 10 days in bungalow #1. And we will never do that again. The house is like a jail. all windows and doors have bars, which constantly have to be closed when you are out or during the night. There were no chairs to sit or lie on in the garden so every day we had to drag heavy furniture out and in to sit outside. On a Saturday afternoon three gardeners entered the garden with chainsaws and machetes to remove some big trees and beautiful cactusses, the habitat of many big iguanas. With all the noise and damage around the home we did not feel on holiday. My complaint to Bonaire Exclusief was commented as "an incident". But the incident repeated monday morning at 8.30 am with the same gardencrew, now to remove a hedge with the neighbours.
The common swimmingpool is a mess. Lots of droppings of iguanas are lying on the tiles around the pool and drain into the swimming water during rainfall. And we had some heavy showers these days. Nobody seems to look after the hygiëne of this SWIMMINGPOOL.
The service is poor. For wifi has to be paid.....(!?) and it could not be reached with our modern tablets in the house, so you had to go outside in the back of the garden or to the swimmingpool to get connected. No change of bedlinnen in 10 days. The servant, who did not pick up sms-messages which we had sent because of a late arrival did nothing with my remarks on the gardeners and the dirty swimmingpool, but was willing enough to criticize us on the chairs outside, which had caught some drops of rain. On checkout we made spic and span appointments about the time to return the keys. Nobody I have waited for half an hour afterwards, then left the keys somewhere hidden in the porch. No, Bonaire Exclusief is not exclusive, it was a disaster.

The plants on Bonaire grow very fast. So fast that we need to cut them short regularly. Our gardeners work with great care and try to limit the nuisance. In this case they were a bit to enthusiastic and we have asked them to finish the job after these peoples holiday. Incidentally they started to work next door. It's Murphy's law...

The internet on Bonaire is slow, so WIFI is even slower. However if you cannot get connected, then the problem is with the person using the "modern" tablets. We have more than 250 people logging on to the system every year. Our WIFI services are for email and limited surfing only. We do not have a network which facilitates internet TV or video conferencing.

We have Self-Catering accommodations. As you might know this simply refers to an efficiency in which guests take care of their own meals, laundry and other needs. The accommodation provided has facilities that allows guest to cater for their own day to day needs. Self-Catering accommodations includes a fully equipped kitchen. Our prices are correspondingly.

We are sorry that our park manager ("servant") did not make it on time. We have discussed this with him.

Okay, our first time here. Apartment was just what we wanted, tidy clean and cosy. Hose was more than happy to help us out, very friendly and accommodating. I think the only negative things to point out would be the ants (natures fault) and the two single beds of slightly different heights!

The accommodation was close to everything, and was in a quiet area. Yes the wifi was slow, the only reason we used it was to check in on our way back. Holiday does not require wifi! (our opinion of course).

The hire car....ahh yes. We used Stuyvesant hire car / truck. We paid for a truck with air con. What we got was a truck with air con that worked only in first gear, one door would not open and we did NOT get told to leave windows open when diving. So when the window got broken by local youths, we got over charged for the repair (I phoned up the garage) and for some strange reason, it seemed to be our problem that Mark's Visa card machine did not work, so we had to pay in cash. Maybe he thought we was going to pay by visa (which we was) and then dispute the fact that we did receive a truck that was not fit for purpose (which we was not).
My advice for the hire car...go with someone else. All we wanted was something that worked. We did not care for the cosmetics! This was mentioned, and the problems were mentioned to Mark, only to be told that this is a Bonaire truck!

We are coming back here, we will probably use these bungalows again. Unless something drastically takes our fancy, we will not be using Stuyvesant again. Although he mentioned he was getting new trucks next year, there just seemed something 'dodgy' about the whole affair. Determined it would not spoil the holiday we could not help the feeling that we had been 'ripped off'.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2a, lovely bungalow.

My husband and I stayed in #11 http://www.bonaireexclusief.nl/eng/bungalows/number11.html
in January of 2012 and received a great rate for a 3 bedroom 2 bath house of about $100 US per day. At first we where very happy with the place and the property manager Hose was very nice and helpful. Included in the price is a free pick-up from the airport by Hose. You pay about $15 for a return. The property is conveniently located in walking distance to the beach and quiet, but I would not stay here again unless they take care of their security issues. Cleaning also needs to be addressed. And I would not stay in this house #11 again. Because the price was so good, the problems with the house could be over looked, but I went into another house and it was in much better shape.

First security: The island itself has a petty crime problem that is not the fault of the property, but many other complexes you can stay at are gated or have security guards. Bonaire Exclusif is a target and the local thieves know it's easy to attack. The owners of the houses know about the theft problems but wont pay for the security. And the management does not warn you about it. We started hanging our clothes to dry inside the house because of the crimes. One vacationer in another house, at the complex, had all their clothing stolen off the lines while they slept one night. The 2nd night another house had shoes stolen off the steps. And then the 3rd night an empty house was broken into and the bed was stolen. I'm sure there was more we did not hear about. This is going past petty crime and is just plain theft. Make sure you use the safe in the houses and kept other items away from windows and out of sight. They also do what is called "fishing" which is when they break the windows, throw a line in with a magnet on the end, and gather items without even going in the house.

Now to the cleaning problem: Pillows are not washed and are stained with brown old sweat marks. Walls are not cleaned and splattered mosquito bug blood on the walls by the beds. They need some oversight on the cleaning that we renters pay extra for. Honestly, for a vacation house it was just slightly worse then an average place, but they can do better. #11 itself has some issues. The leather couch is so disintegrated, if you touch the back upper pillows, the leather is so crunchy, it gets under your fingernails and falls to the floor. Most of the other furniture is falling apart too. It all looks like it used to be outside and is weather beaten. There was no cable TV reception, no WIFI reception, and a weird ongoing squeak, from what I think was the water pips.

A little info about the rentals is stretched. Wifi is only really available if you are staying in one of a few houses right by the pool and you have to pay extra for it, which they do tell you up front. I tried a couple of times to use it, and I had to go sit out by the pool. Problem is ,it's out in the sunlight, so you can't see your computer monitor and if it starts to rain, well you get the picture. And it's slow. Also, the website http://www.bonaireexclusief.nl/eng/ makes it seem as if the complex is secure and gated by the way they show the layout and state that it is a "closed bungalow park". It is surrounded by a 5 foot wall, but it's wide open to drive in, no security gate, no guard, and people can easily hop the walls into the back yards.

Again, not all bad, it's a good deal. I might stay there again if they had security and only in a different house. But my first choice will be to stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: we don't recommend #11. Houses right next to pool get wifi, others do not. Make sure you never l...

Security
In recent years we have invested a lot in security. All accommodations are fitted with anti theft measurements and the park is surrounded with a big wall. However the tiny problem we have experienced are to small to make the resort a fortress. We will always try to find the balance between security and a good atmosphere. And what are we taking about, sometimes a stolen towel or some shoes. The crime on Bonaire is nothing compared to Florida, Bahama's or similar islands.

Cleaning
We are sorry the bungalow was not properly cleaned. It's our priority to improve this as soon as possible.

WIFI
Our system has a coverage of 1 square mile. But the strength of the computer you use is also an important factor. We cannot insure that all computers have enough internal power to get a proper connection.

The bungalow resort is a private park and only has one entrance. We indeed do not have a guard or security gate. That's not needed for those few times a year someone steals a towel. We off course do not advertise our resort as a secured place.
