“Spacious private lodge in Bonaire's great outdoors”
Reviewed 29 October 2013 via mobile

In the private grounds of the lodge we had a 2-story former stables to ourselves. At breakfast, we could watch the hummingbirds, afterwards we would feed the pigs and have a stroll through the grounds watching birds, butterflies and iguanas in the cactuses. As the lodge is located close to Kralendijk, all the diving/snorkling spots and the National park are close by. The village of Kralendijk being just 10-15 minutes by car.
If you like, you can prepare your own meals, there is a fully fitted kitchen and a nice table with a great view. The owner is taking great care of his property, keeping away the goats and mules that roam the country and eat up everything that grows except for the cactuses. The lodge uses only solar power, and since there is almost always a strong wind on Bonaire, your lodge is airconditioned by nature! Our kids simply loved the place, the animals, the outside shower (there is one inside too), their own room, the lookout, driving the unpaved road in the back of the pick-up truck, everything.

When you're looking for a place to stay at Bonaire, look no further and book Auriga Ecolodge. The owner Hans (re)build the lodge (which was formerly a horse stable) with his own hands and he's deservedly proud of the result.

Expect a big wooden house with a nice and fully equipped kitchen, two showers (one outdoor shower!), two bedrooms, plenty of space to relax or sit and a rooftop terrace from where you can see a sky full of stars at night or a beautiful sunrise/sunset. All day and night you see and hear Bonaire's wildlife like iguanas, all kinds of birds, lizards and donkeys. And of course the three sweet dogs of Hans. The property is very green and lush compared to the dry, bare ground you see when you drive from Kralendijk to the lodge.

Hans himself is very nice, welcoming and helpful. He knows a lot about Bonaire's nature and is dedicated to preserve and protect it. That's why you really should go on a tour with him as well (Outdoor Bonaire). We did the Kayak tour in the mangroves, which was really nice!

Enjoy!!

Auriga Ecolodge is the perfect destination when you're looking for a place in the middle of nature. The area around the lodge is planted with typical Bonairean trees and bushes. A real green zone! There's chickens, a greenhouse and a BBQ place. And there are loads of other cool plans in the making! The lodge itself is spacious, colourful and one-with-nature. There's even an extra outdoor shower to make your experience complete. We loved this place! It's also romantic, private and lots of time to watch the sun go down, or up ;-), from the special star-gazing platform. It's such an amazing place, this kind of peace and quietness is really hard to find. And yet it's only 15 min from the city centre or Lac Bay. What else would you wish for?

Only a small drive away from the bustle of the town and water front, driving through the cacti bushes, we found ourselves in a little oasis, where at the same time as feeling connected to nature in an open space, we had all the privacy as well. Highlights for us were the warm and friendly design that made us feel at home, the fun BBQ area, the outdoor shower which gives a feeling of freedom and our little outdoor friends the hermit crabs, frogs and moths.

The Auriga Ecolodge is an ideal place to experience Bonaire’s back country known as the kunuku. The 15-minute drive on dirt roads is well worth the effort for it delivers you to a Mecca of island nature. Owners Hans and Jenny have created an oasis for native plants and animals. I especially enjoyed my time on the stargazer platform that rises above the surrounding canopy of kadushi cacti (similar in look to North America’s organ pipe cacti), acacia and divi divi trees. From this high perch you can spot raucous parrots and parakeets, colorful tropical orioles and the strange, nocturnal nightjars. To the east, you can see a slice of Caribbean blue. The rest of the vista is rolling farmland covered with arid vegetation and small fields of sorghum. Windmills reminiscent of the Oklahoma plains punctuate the skyline.
The lodge itself is a rustic outpost of local stone and wooden beams with all the conveniences of home. The ground floor has a full kitchen with gas stove. A hammock and hanging chair are great places to enjoy the constant, cooling trade winds or one of the many books from the lodge’s ample library. The clean bathroom is tiled with a water-saver toilet and a large shower stall. There is also an outdoor shower if you want to get clean under the stars.
But what I like most about Auriga is that it truly lives up to its billing as an eco-lodge. Solar panels supply the electricity and black water tanks passively heat the water. Hans has planted endemic species of island flowers and trees. This off-the-grid place has a lush look to it, unique for arid Bonaire.
If you really want a unique Caribbean experience, book the Auriga for a week. It’s a great place to chill out and get away from it all. Hans also gives guided nature tours and his local knowledge is impressive. He has lived on Bonaire for 17 years. But the lodge is not so remote that you can’t enjoy the bright lights of Kralendijk, the island’s seaside port. It’s only a 20-minute ride to town. Just watch out for the roaming donkeys when returning on the back roads at night.

For those who are real environmentalists and want to explore the island, this is the perfect place. Hans, the owner, is dedicated to the environment and uses solar and wind power to help preserve the natural beauty of the island. Hans also happens to be an excellent tour guide for caving (we got to go snorkeling in a cave as well as get up close and personal with some bats and other cave creatures) and kayaking through the mangroves (exquisitely beautiful!!) and other such adventures. As a guest at the lodge you can get a discount on these trips.

The only set back in the location is that it is not very close to the shore. We divided our vacation into two: half was at the ecolodge to explore the island, and the other half by the beach to go snorkeling and see the reefs.

You should definitely (even if not staying at the lodge) go with Hans as a guide. I believe he works for outdoor Bonaire.

You have a very large and comfortable housing area with a full kitchen to cook in, two large bedrooms, an upstairs eating area and a place on the roof to see the stars.

Also, I'd advise a 4-wheel drive car if you're staying there... the road can get bumpy/muddy and is unpaved.

In the middle of nature, close to the eats coast you find the Auriga Ecolodge. A very specious lodge which gives you a feeling of total relaxation the moment you step out of your car and still be close to Kralendijk and all beaches and dive-sites. The lodge is very tasteful decorated with a kitchen with all you need to cook a nice meal. A lovely bedroom with a very good bed and very clean. Surrounded by trees there is an outside shower and if its to "cold" there is an inside shower and toilet also very clean. All electricity is powered by solar, and water comes from big water-tanks which makes you very conscious on how to use it, even when you get back home. At night the sky is full of stars, all you hear are the sounds of the night, the leaves rustle in the cool wind, little crabs walking around carrying their shel house. Owls, and before dark flamingos fly over. What a wonderful place, an oasis of serene tranquility, adventure and fun. Thanks for this great experience!

We have never had a guest who has stayed this long at the lodge without really leaving the property. I suppose it must have given you the home feeling we want people to have while staying with us. Let nature do his wonderful healing work.
Hope to see you again here !
