“Not an ideal option for divers”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

Was in Bonaire for a week of scuba diving with a group of friends. We booked the Windsock for the week. When on a dive vacation, I have a fairly minimalistic approach to my hotel stay. Basically I need a place to sleep, a place to wash and dry my gear, and proximity to food. But I expect even diving hotels to be clean and well serviced.

I had several disappointments with Windsock. First, it is condo rental, not a hotel. Which means you get handed your key on day 1, and other then a major malfunction with the room, you are on your own for the week. No services. Not even a washer and dryer. Even though there is a 'manager' on duty, he asked us to contact him between 9 am and 10 am if we had any needs. Seriously. What diver is at their room between 9 am and 10 am? Nice enough guy though. Having said that, I could live with all of the above, if it were clean.

The rooms are not cleaned well. I confirmed this with other units too. Just walk across the floor in barefeet and then look at the bottoms of your feet. Or wipe off the counter as soon as you arrive. It was disgusting.

Second, there is no washer or dryer in the unit nor on the premises. So pack accordingly.

There were no trash bags provided (other then the 1 in the can), no toilet paper (other then the partial roll already there), and only 2 keys per room.

The bedrooms were strangely configured. First, there is one 'master' room with two large beds that allegedly can be separated into two beds if needed. There are two cabinets that act as closets, and a full bathroom. It has an in-room AC unit.

The second bedroom is a very small room with two smaller beds. It has an in-room AC unit as well. The room is so small that you really can't separate the beds and walk between them. We lovingly referred to it as 'the kids room'. It's bathroom is basically a partial bath. You have to go out into the main area to another room to use facilities.

The living room and kitchen are decent sized and reasonably well equipped. But very little dishwasher soap, etc. There is no AC in the main living areas, but fortunately the rooms have sliding doors to the patio that when opened, allow a nice cross breeze.

There is a small pool area. Nothing exciting and it appears the pool pump is broken. At least I never saw it running.

There is one dive site at the windsock. It is fine for a quick dive. There is a private beach area with chairs as well.

The windsock is located very close to the airport. Which means two things: 1) you FEEL the airplanes going overhead and 2) you are in the middle of nowhere. There is no restaurant or other services within 'walking' distance. So when you arrive, you need to head to the supermarket and get everything you including toilet paper, cleaners, paper towels, food, ant spray, trash bags etc.

There are several other better options on Bonaire. Many that have onsite restaurants and some basic amenities. On my next trip, I'll be staying at one of those.

Windsock has a total of eight apartments, four on the ground floor and four one floor up. The ground floor apartments have a large terrace with direct access to the garden surrounding the house and the upper apartments has a big balcony. All balconies and terraces are facing west towards the quite busy road EEG Boulevard so there is some traffic noise. There is also a swimming pool and a parking lot on the property. On the other side of the EEG Boulevard is Windsock’s private beach with sunbeds, toilets, shower, equipment storage room and a Wannadive service point. The house is located very close to the airport and you can hear air planes landing and taking off, especially the big planes. But there airport is not very busy and it is mainly active during daytime so the sound never really bothered us. We stayed at Windsock for three weeks and enjoyed it very much. The house is well maintained and has everything you need. We stayed in apartment number 3 on the ground floor and it had a well equipped kitchen with all the kitchen utensils and equipment you need (only a toaster oven thought). It was really like a home away from home. The air conditioned master bedroom was big with an en-suite large bathroom and has a lot of storage space. There is also a second smaller bedroom that we did not use - also with AC and an en-suite shower. A second toilet is accessible directly from the inner patio just outside of both bedrooms. The large combined living room/kitchen had a couch, two arm chairs, a dining table with four chairs and two bar stools. The terrace is large and has a big table. We ate all our meals out on the terrace. A ceiling fan on the terrace provided well deserved cooling as there is no AC in the living room/kitchen. Free WiFi internet is included but the signal is only strong enough in the kitchen/living room/terrace area. Evert and Diny who are the property managers were really helpful. We also rented an affordable small car from Windsock for our entire stay. Evert booked a diving class at Wannadive and a mangrove kayak tour for us and was in general very helpful in case we had any questions. We also paid the activities booked via Windsock directly to Evert and then he issues a voucher for the activities. It is possible to pay with credit card but it cost 5% extra so you need either a debit card or cash. We did most of our grocery shopping at the Van den Tweel supermarket (open 8am-8pm), about 10 minutes drive away, where you can buy pretty much everything you may needs. They have both Dutch and American products. What we really liked about Windsock was the fact that they have their own beach. If we wanted to have a lazy day and not go anywhere we could just walk across the road and spend the whole day relaxing on the sunbeds and swimming and snorkelling in the sea. Snorkelling is alright by the Windsock beach and you can see plenty of fish. We recommend swimming either south along the shore two-three houses down where there are rocks and corals and plenty of fish. You can also swim north and look at the fish hiding under the dock at Bellafonte. The reef is also very close to the shore so you can just swim out and snorkel or dive there as well. If you get bored of the Windsock beach you can just walk a few minutes north towards the airport where there is a sandy beach with good snorkelling or south where there is another small beach. All in all we can recommend Windsock and if we’ll come to Bonaire we would stay there again.

This was my second trip to Bonaire and stayed at the very comfortable apartments Windsock. To make it even better the property is now managed by couple on site that make themselves available regularly for any assistance you may need, in my case it was being able to place a call to United to fix an issue with my flight. We stayed two weeks again and the situation is ideal with good kitchen, across the street is the house beach with a tank depot and some storage. The pool now has a barbecue for use. Bonaire is very good for an independent dive vacation and the Windsock with Wannadive helps to fill what may be needed and make sure all goes well with your stay. Third trip will be in the near future.

After 8 or so trips to Bonaire, I've settled on Windsock as a favourite place to stay. It is clean, well located, beautiful, boasts gorgeous gardens and a pool. Across the road is a private beach - your room key opens the gate. Occasionally the beach might be closed briefly for a private function such as a wedding.

Evert and Diny - part owners and 100% managers - are gracious and helpful hosts. Any small items we lacked (a clothes drying rack and an extension cord!) were immediately and cheerfully provided. As pilots, they can even offer you an aerial tour of the island ($) from the nearby airport. Recommended.

One cannot help be impressed by the enduring quality of construction at Windsock. I first stayed there 10 years ago. Everything has been maintained or improved since. Our unit was liberally stocked with cookware and china, had a new flat panel TV, a huge fridge with ice maker and a fabulous master bathroom I only wish I had at home.

Bonaire is changing: the island seemed so much cleaner than last year - not so much plastic blowing about, and there is an obvious and confident police presence too. Road traffic and noise through Belnem on EEG Boulevard is increasing however, and is the only downside to being at Windsock or any of the other small resorts along this luxury part of the coast. Our understanding is that this issue is being addressed.

You need a car to reach the many fine restaurants in Kralendijk. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Upper floors are quieter, with a nice breeze (or more!) wafting steadily through the apartment Plus...

We have visited Bonaire several times over the past four years, the diving is amazing and our dive shop the best on the island. This visit we chose to stay in another location due to over pricing at our usual resort. We are very glad we made that decision.
Windsock is a beautiful, well maintained, and centrally located property just a few minutes from the airport. One of the main things we look for is value, proximity to dive shop and condition of property. Windsock has all these criteria met and exceeded. The hosts are marvelous, picked us and all our dive gear from the airport, gave us a nice tour of the accommodations (pool, windsock beach and wanna dive station on the beach, provided security for our personal belongings, had dive truck available for rent, and on our last night invited us to a local island party.
We could not have had better stay, clean, relaxing and above all affordable. Really lovely stay.

We stayed in apartment #7 for 2 weeks. The living room, kitchen and bathroom are nice, but the bedrooms are too basic and the bed is not comfortable. The acoustic is pretty bad, the patio on the ground floor makes it all very noisy. The garden is very nice with lovely birds, butterflies and friendly reptiles. The "beach" across the road has great views on Klein Bonaire and is a very good dive site. Make your diving arrangements with Wannadive (very good, HQ at the Eden Beach Resort) and you can keep your gear here, also pick up and drop off for tanks.

Although our stay was over six months ago, I thought it would be helpful to have a review in English on TripAdvisor. The apartment is well designed with a full kitchen with dishwasher and full size refrigerator (may or may not have an ice maker depending on the unit you get) and all necessary cooking essentials. A/C in the bedrooms worked very well and proved necessary as the windows are small and allow very little air circulation. A/C was not missed in the main living area as both glass walls slide open to let the cooling winds circulate. The location is superb for the southern dive sites, but does sit close to the airport which is easily forgotten until that early morning KLM flight arrives. By the second day it was comical to us as the faint roar gets louder and louder and the windows start to rattle. We simply rolled over and went back to sleep. The small freshwater pool was a nice way to relax in the afternoon heat. It is very good to know that these are individually owned apartments that are leased out, so there can be some subtle differences between them and that other than the unit itself and the linens, not much else is provided. You will get one roll of toilet paper per bathroom, a small bar of soap in the bathroom, and one garbage bag for the kitchen. Everything else is dependent upon the previous guests, although there are property managers on site should you have any problems or dire needs. Wi-Fi signal was strong and reliable. Access to the Wannadive location across the street was wonderful. We had 24 hour access to tanks, gear storage, as well as an easy, but fantastic dive site. We are headed back to the island again this summer and will probably stay here again. We really enjoy the freedom that shore diving on Bonaire provides and think that the Windsock Apartments only adds to the independent vacation that we so enjoy there .

Room Tip: Second floor!!!
