Let me start off by stating a few things. First, our group of four needed an all inclusive in Havana and the Acuario is the only one to be found. We were scoping out a hotel to bring down a group of 24 plus next April. Secondly, most Canadians go to this resort between November and March. We were there in August, the height of the Cuban Vacation Season. 90% of the guests appeared to be local Cubans enjoying their vacation.
The Acuario sits at the Hemingway Marina in the west end of Havana. The layout and design is very good. The resort is made up of several three floor walk-ups. Each room's balcony overlooks one of the canals at the Hemingway Marina. The views are wonderful. We sat checking out the many ocean going yachts and power boats we envy in our eyes!
Let's face it, no one goes to Cuba for the food! The food at the Acuario was not very good at all. Having said that, remember we were there during Cuban Vacation and perhaps the food was geared more toward the majority than the minority. Over a two day period it appeared an inspection team arrived and wow did things improve, but as soon as they left, POW back to less than average.
The 24 hour Snack Bar only serves food from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, but the drinks flow 24 hours a day.
I only saw one over worked grounds keeper who never made it down toward our block of rooms. There was a dead bird laying in a garden and it was there for our entire seven days. The common halls on the ground floor of our block of rooms and stairs never saw a broom or were washed down, except when it rained.
Our room was pretty good. The Acuario is renovating and ours was newish. We had a suite which gave us two bedrooms. Our air-conditioners broken down a couple of times, staff were quick to try to get them up and going.
The pool is massive. It is divided into smaller pieces designed for children and relaxing. They even have tiled lounges built into one area that was for adults, we sort of! The pool deck had not seen a good cleaning in a long time. It was covered in a brownish mould. The pool itself was very clean. The music was played at maximum volume all day long and into the evening. At times it was very difficult to carry on a conversation. Thoughts of the main speaker ending up in one of the canals were common within our group. Requests to turn down the music were mostly ignored.
The Acuario does provide a shuttle bus into Old Havana. A cab ride cost us between 20 to 25 CUC. Touring Old Havana is a must both during the day and at night. You will see two different cities.
I'll finish off with commenting on the staff. They did their best with what they had. Many tried to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. We noticed some staff started at 9:00 am and remained at their post until 10:00 pm.
