If you are staying in a hotel near (or in) the old town of Havana, beware, the taxi fare to this and other restaurants in Miramar, will set you back at least 10 cuds (each way) which is approx. equivalent in dllrs/euros. Also, our taxi driver had to ask twice before he found the restaurant so take a map to show him where to go! We had reserved a table for two and although arrived early before the reserved time of 7h30 pm (no other patrons) we were warmly welcomed and seated to a very nice table next to the fountain and pre-dinner drinks were ordered and delivered swiftly. Unfortunately, several items on the menu were unavailable (a large party of Chinese diplomats had booked all the lamb and goat and there was no cheese, anchovies or bruschetta to make up some of the entrées…) However, despite reading that no live music was available on Mondays, a group of musicians soon appeared to entertain us and the many people now arriving at the restaurant. There is an air conditioned room (dark and gloomy) so we opted for the (very large and roomy) patio where the ceiling fans do a good job. The personnel who speak very good English, are professional and seemed genuinely interested in making our evening an enjoyable one to remember. The food was delicious. Both starters of grilled eggplant and the other of crab were excellent. The main courses of chicken and slices of grilled beef were also well cooked and nicely presented. Maybe not very Cuban cuisine, more international, but that was why we had chosen this particular restaurant. We ended our meal without a dessert but my husband was given a cigar and we both enjoyed a complimentary glass of rum to sip while enjoying the music which was so good we bought a CD and listening to this back home we happily remember our evening at La Fontana.
