“Amazing architecture but covered by scaffolds”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

All buildings here seemed crumbled, run down or covered in scaffolds. This is a grand building but so much construction work on and around it. A real shame. Everything takes more than a lifetime to fix.

“Impressive”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 August 2014

An impressive building, a replica to the American one. When we visited it was being restored. Now, it operates as a museum.

“Outstanding architecture. Tales and legends inside”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

Built between 1926 and 1929, a time record, during President Gerardo Machado Goverment (who later became a right wing dictator), this building is not exactly a copy of the Washington notable House of Representatives. Certainly, they have the same fonction (in Cuba, after restoration, it will be used with the same aim), but, for instance, the Havana Capitol has interior courtyards, following the classical pattern in colonial Cuban architecture, the dome is not so wide but possibly higher for a few meters, and it is also closest to the rest of the city being an important reference point. In the Union each State has his capitol, so Cuba, before Revolution, must be one because of the strait political, economic and financial ties, but the cuban architects tried to put new elements to acomodate the structure to the tropical climate.
At the moment of the inauguration it was considered among the six finest palaces around the world and many legends aroused inside. Besides the famous diamond robery, it is said that Clemente Vasquez Bello¨s soul (this man was President of the Senate in Machado¨s Goverment ans was killed by revolutionaries) mourn in the Lost Steps Room and other spaces, by night. Will this spirit be there when the Capitol reopen?

“Fascinating twin”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2014

Great to see such classic architecture - shame about all the scaffold when we visited but it will no doubt look magnificent when the repairs are completed.
