Going back was sad and joyous at times. The place has detiorated beyond imagination. Old Havana has some great restaurants. Don't settle for the famous ones. Walk around and do not take advice from street hustlers. They get a commission for taking you to a restaurant. Some are good. The fish and shelfish is extremely fresh and inexepensive. The main streets have been somewhat fixed up, but the minute you stray away to the other streets, it's like a bomb dropped and has not been repaired. Lots of people asking for $, soap, tooth paste, whatever you can give them. A great place to visit if you like vintage cars. Negotiate with your cab driver before you enter. Cab rides should be between $3 and $6 CUC. Do not pay more. Lots of street hustlers trying to sell you cigars, a 'girl', a 'man', a good restaurant, weed, whatever you want. The art market is a good place to buy paintings. Most of the art is lousy, but some booths will have very good original art. Located at El Mercado San Jose (by the docks). I brought 22 paintings back with me and love them all. Bring your own toilet paper, none to be had except at hotels. What is available will desintregate instantly.
