We were actually surprised at how much we enjoyed Old Havana, with its cobbled streets, old churches and buildings and great looking squares (which reminds one of some of the old cities of Spain). From one end to the other, one can take about 45 minutes on average (just to give you the scale) and highly manageable on foot.

Currently, only 40% of the restorations are completed and it may take a long time given the lack of funding. What we loved very much are the residents of old Havana with its amazing ethnic diversity, friendliness, with lots of character (they are always willing to help - and some may go all out to guide tourists). I particularly enjoyed the walk along the coast with its beautiful sunset, and the great looking old Cadillacs (though they are slowly replaced by Korean and European models).

Diesel exhaust fumes fill the air - with uneven roads and rubbish along the paths. For those heading to Havana, these are part of the experience - an authentic old Havana experience!

Very touristy, but absolutely beautiful. Spent hours just wondering the streets. The food is more expensive around here, but almost worth it to sit in plaza and be serenaded.

We had a tour with a woman who is involved in restoration of the old buildings. She provided great historical and architectural perspective.

City with great personality in spite of ruins!
The restored buildings are beatifull, making you feel in a Spanish Colonial era.

Driving to Old Havana from the airport was a bit of a shock for me. It looked dark and gloomy. Morning was different story! The more I explored it the more I liked it. The architecture is amazing. Just wandering around and looking up at the buildings makes your day. You can find beautifully restored and refurbished buildings alongside with old ruined buildings that trees grow from. There are many little squares with street sellers of old books and other antiques and street musicians who will make a good party for few bucks. Old cars and horse carriages are another beauty of old Havana. There are many restaurants and bars with live music throughout the day. With food one should be careful. Cuba is not the place with rich gastronomic offer. I chose to stick with shrimps and lobster.
Take your time explore the little narrow streets and hidden squares and breath in the great atmosphere.
