We were actually surprised at how much we enjoyed Old Havana, with its cobbled streets, old churches and buildings and great looking squares (which reminds one of some of the old cities of Spain). From one end to the other, one can take about 45 minutes on average (just to give you the scale) and highly manageable on foot.
Currently, only 40% of the restorations are completed and it may take a long time given the lack of funding. What we loved very much are the residents of old Havana with its amazing ethnic diversity, friendliness, with lots of character (they are always willing to help - and some may go all out to guide tourists). I particularly enjoyed the walk along the coast with its beautiful sunset, and the great looking old Cadillacs (though they are slowly replaced by Korean and European models).
Diesel exhaust fumes fill the air - with uneven roads and rubbish along the paths. For those heading to Havana, these are part of the experience - an authentic old Havana experience!
