We (two Canadians) booked this hotel as part of a low-priced Sunwing Vacation out of Ottawa, January 12-20, 2014. I stayed in the hotel 2 nights of the 7, my friend stayed for 5 of the 7 nights. We have no regrets, for the low price, but this hotel is certainly bare-bones.
The water, mould and security problems continue as renovations proceed at the usual lethargic Cuban pace. As temperatures outside were comfortable during our stay, we cleared out the mould smell by keeping the window open. We filled the garbage pail to have water for flushing the toilet. When the water (briefly) comes on, there is hot water in the shower. Our breakfast was included and it is good, except for the terrible coffee. Good coffee can be purchased at the lobby bar, where you can quaff cheap beer and watch the world go by on the noisy street. Our room 502 faced a quiet side street and the beds were comfortable and the door locks are electronic (with the plastic credit card-type entry system). Reception was friendly and the checkin was quick.
Even if you are not staying at the Colina, you can stop by the patio bar to meet other foreigners. We met an English-speaking american expat who used this routine to find company. There are plenty of good casa particulars nearby, so if the Colina is part of a cheap enough package, you can use it as your “landing spot” in a great location in Vedado. We didn't stay every night as we had other places to see and things to do, but I would not say the place is “horrible” as some reviews describe.
