It is a nice hotel very well located right in the center of Habana. The lounge is huge for a today's hotel. It seems this hotel must have been a luxury hotel in times before.
The problem are things like an overused carpet in the room, or a not so great food service and a old Air conditioner button. but it is clean and has a beautiful view of Habana.

Location was good, nice area with lovely Avenues, Coppelia Icecream Park interesting and it was safe. Walked via Malecon to old town/harbour in 30 mins. (We are over 60). Tourist bus very handy and used this 2 days running. Amazingly large "lobby" with good atmosphere and helpful staff. Pasta meal in restaurant nex to Reception was tasty and reasonably priced as was the Cafe and bar(s). 25th floor restaurant was not open but views spectacular and were told the nightclub is great venue. Our room on 8th floor was BIG, clean, pleasant enough for our 3 night stay and the outstanding views of Havana and sea made it even better. We just could not stop gazing out there. Breakfast room: Relaxing, no rush and we enjoyed the food which certainly set us up for the day. One morning, a lady played the piano.

The public areas on first 2 floors - no complains at all. Not so the corridors which had an eerie feel to them, were dirty, unkept, and distinctly uninviting even making some allowances....
The lifts were challenging, the safety questionable!

Took at stroll to Hotel Nacional and spent time in their beautiful gardens. For 40cc (approx) we had buffet and Parisien Cabaret with included 2 drinks. It was after midnight when we walked back and we experienced no problems at all.

Havana was all we expected plus some. Fabulous experience and could have easily stayed for a week. If you like beer then don't miss the micro brewery in the corner of Plaza Vieja. It was a more than pleasant rest whilst seeing the sites.

I would recommend this hotel but would not stay there again myself as I couldn't face using the lifts

Its very easy to make comparisons with most other western hotels. I think work on the premise that a 5* quoted for Cuba is 2-3* in Europe. I will say that this is the biggest hotel in Cuba and full of tourists only. The staff are friendly and if you tip at the beginning of your holiday they remember - especially room service as the room was spotless after that. The food is not brilliant and the top floor restaurant was not good (views excellent). Take a rubber sink plug as they were missing and your own beach towel to the pool as those supplied were a bit dubious. Strike up a deal with one of the taxi drivers at the hotel and they will be at your call - great service "ask for Micheal". Get to breakfast either early or late as its chaos mid shift.
Use the tourist bus $5CUC for the entire day as it takes you into the centre of Havana.

Habana Libre hotel is a major tourist hotel in the outskirts of Havana. We stayed on the 15th Floor and the view was just absolutely amazing and definately made the hotel stay worth it in itself. This hotel is not near the old town and is a good 30 minute walk to get there - or roughly 3CUC in a local taxi. teh walk from the hotel to the old town is worth doing as it takes you through the local backstreets and gives you a flavour for the real Havana life. This in itself we saw as a benefit as we got more of flavour of local life in the suburbs rather than the tourist life in the old town. Local paladores were amazing. The breakfast is absolutely amazing and definately not to be missed. The main "hop on hop off" tourist bustop is almost directly outside the hotel which is very handy. The rooms were very large but were a bit rough arond the edges, but more than comfortable. The balcony's are only juliet balconies and not anything that you can sit out on. I would definately reocmmend this hotel for a stay in Havana.

We had booked with the National & was bumped over to this hotel for 1 night for who knows what reason. We were on the 15th floor with a good view & a large clean room & well equipped bathroom. We were very hungry when we arrived so went for a pizza...so bad. In the morning we went to the included buffet...so gross, my husband could not eat again for a week. It was really that bad, we feed our farm animals better. The hallways had a naseating smell. The elevators were slow & stopped at every floor. The staff at the front desk continued to get our room mixed up saying that we were in room 1512 when we were in 1514 so did not get messages from our rep & unfortunately wasted most of our day. For what they charge for this place is outrageous no matter what country your in.

we stayed here one night, we had booked to stay at Raquel in Vieja but when we arrived they had no power and with much happiness they told us they had arranged for us to stay at this wonderful hotel. Upon arrival we were initially quite impressed, fantastic view from 21st floor (after having moved from a room with no working aircon from the 7th floor, no porters assisted us at any point), good sized room and the best bathrooms we'd had in our 2 week trip, but the location was awful, the staff were awful, the food was awful. When our rep found out what had happened she immediately offered us to the change to return to the Vieja district and we moved out the next morning.

If you want a business hotel that could be anywhere with no character whatsoever, this is the place for you, though the service and food was terrible. Porters did come up to us when we were leaving, they took our cases then disappeared, my partner eventually pushed the trolley with our cases to the waiting taxi which did cause much amusement and he was happy with his tip :-)

Stay in the Vieja area to avoid the hassles of travelling back and forth and for a much more rewarding trip
