Gran Caribe Club Atlantico
Ranked #56 of 80 Hotels in Havana
Reviewed 15 March 2013

We took a 7 day package from Sunwing and it was pretty good. Flights departed and arrived ontime and SunWing service was excellent. As we were the only ones going to the Atlantico we were picked up and delivered by taxi.

As others have said, the Atlantico is the best of both worlds. Great sand and location - Havana is accesible by the several/day free shuttle which made exploring Havana great.

The food is simple fare, plentiful and while somewhat limited, the bar grill restaurant and the restaurant in the hotel (both require reservations) are very good. Fresh fish is great. The red wine from Spain was surprisingly good and we must apologize to the hotel for drinking more than our share.

The rooms are clean, not overly well equipped but then this is a resort 3 star. Efforts to repaint were evident and appreciated.

The staff are the high point especially if one tips for service. Toiletries, and other items as gifts are very much appreciated. Check in and out was seemless.

We had a great time and we will return next year.

It's my first time in Cuba. The weather was wonderful with averqge 25 C everyday for this time ---Cuba's winter. We spent our most time in La Havana. This hotel has a nice beach with clean water and white sand. It has shuttle bus to Havana with only about 30 minutes away. It's not a fancy hotel with large group of people but it's fairly good for people who like to have a quiet and relaxing place.

Room Tip: Does not really matter. Pretty much same...

Review - Gran Caribe Club Atlantico

Package booked with Sunwing, travelled end of January, out of Ottawa.

Flight there: The plane left Ottawa a little late. The usual Sunwing services were provided, choice of Chicken & Rice or Veg Pasta. We both had the chicken; its airplane food, it was edible. The pilot announced we were going to be landing earlier than anticipated, thus depriving our pallets the taste of coffee.

Landed and disembarked at the Varadero airport, without incident. Queuing through Immigration and Security was speedy and also easy. Collecting our luguage took some time. Despite our 22:00 arrival time, the airport was fully staffed, as were the beer cart guys and the Tour Reps directing people to their buses. It all made for a very simple and quiet arrival to Cuba.

The transfer to the hotel was quick, with only one stop before ours.

The staff at the front desk wore friendly smiles and were pleasant and helpful. The bell-hop helped our tired selves get our suitcases to our first floor room.

The room was clean and smelled aired. The magnetic lock on the door needed to be treated just right to open the door for you, but always did let us in. The room, its balcony, air-conditioner and bathroom were all sufficient. Nothing fancy, but more than adequate, and everything in good repair. Our room, as mentioned, was on the first floor. We were in the part of the resort that jutted out from the lobby towards the road. We were located above the resort store, with a view of the front gate guard hut. Despite being near the roadway and within line of sight of the front doors, it was never noisy. There was always something to see from the comfort of our balcony, a.k.a. front porch.

We were greeted by the over-night bartender with an offer of ham and cheese sandwiches. Something it seems they do for guests arriving very late at night. Having changed into shorts, sandals and unpacked our travel mugs, we settled in to the breeze-way off the lobby, the smoking area, for the first of many nights of people watching. The bartenders in the 24 hour bar are great. They are pleasant, polite, helpful and accommodating spanish teachers. The ladies in the pool bar, and the guy who manned the piano bar (Look for the room with a large big screen tv... it sits on the covered, namesake, piano) are also great people. The addition of diet soda and ice to their selection of offerings would probably be appreciated, but add more rum, you’ll get over it. The coffee was always great, and both our travel mugs and reusable water bottles were always happily filled.

The food was simple, bordering on ick some days. I can survive on anything, but a fussy eater might be hard pressed to satiate their hunger. Breakfast had the expected omelette station with all the trimmings, and a smile. Most expected breakfast fare was available, pancake, toast, scrambled eggs, fruit, etc. The menu did not include bacon for the duration of our stay.

Between breakfast and lunch, and again between lunch and dinner, there were cheese sandwiches or hotdog and cheese sandwiches, both made on a grill (though not quite long enough to melt the cheese... Have more rum). The odd day we had ham or beef patties to accompany cheese as well.

Lunch for us, consisted of tomato and cucumber salad (some days with choice of lettuce, most days not), fresh bread, cheese and boiled eggs. There was a few hot dishes to choose from, most refreshed leftovers from breakfast and the previous day’s dinner, some more inviting than others. Dinner offerings in the buffet were similar but included freshly made fish or chicken from the grill station and a pasta station. There were a few dinner components that were just wonderful, though these rarely appeared more than once, with the exception of the grilled white fish fillets. A must have that was available most nights. Late diners would find themselves with less selection, if at all, in the case of the aforementioned ‘good’ dishes. But there could usually be bread and desserts to be found. We didn’t starve, nor did we lose weight. The ‘a la carte’ in the main building, if available, has a very nice chicken salad appetizer and an excellent fish main course. Staff in all the venues were courteous and helpful without exception.

The shuttle to Havana was punctual, reliable, and convenient. It was also fast and air-conditioned. You need to book your seat on the bus the day before, there were a few occasions when all the seats were spoken for. Taxis are available and will run you $15 CUC (or less, if you haggle) for a one way trip, in either direction, between the resort and the City.

The pool was clean but rather cold. There did not seem to have been a shortage of loungers, though shaded ones were at a premium. The beach area was well kept and large enough to suit. There were also plenty of loungers there, and more shaded area to be had.

If you want a beach side resort from which to explore Havana, this would be your best, all-inclusive, low cost, choice.

We will likely return, the proximity to Havana, its reasonable cost, and reliable shuttle, can't be beat.

I just returned from one week at Hotel Atlantico. Expecting the worst, having read many reviews here & elsewhere, this is actually a great hotel choice for visitors seeking all incl beach resort (fantastic beaches), great nightly entertainment, and close proximity to Havana for culture & city tours etc (Hotel provides 2 shuttles back/forth a day). Food was also much better than expected, one must visit cuba with open mind, knowing its limitations. The Food was surprisingly quite good considering what I heard before. Even my friend commented the same.Breakfast in particular was always our fave. My advice, stay away from undercooked meats or anything that looks gross. Also avoid large leafy veggies, seafood(in particular fish). I mostly ate vegetarian/salads dinners, little meat like chicken, roast pork, occasionally clams/calamari. But generally it was healthy, filling & good. After few days my friend didnt listen and started overeating things like fish & fruits with skin (best to eat peeled fruits like papaya, pineapple). He had diareah the last few days & then just stopped eating. Often we did beach in mornings, then Havana, early afternoon, then stayed in Hotel at Nights since they have nightly shows, bars etc. This resort is gay friendly, and adult minded, singles, couples, all ages (you dont see many kids which was good), it wasnt too crowded or loud. There were good day & night activities...and the beach & sand was fantastic. In cuba tourists tend to pity cubans and tip for everything. My advice, be very cautious tipping hotel staff, they are already the most privilidged workers in cuba- having access to luxery of tips. Its OK if you tip discreetly for great (regular) service, but to tip out of pity and spoil some workers into thinking if they fetch you a soup bowl, when none is out on the table for guests- they should be tipped, in my view is ridiculous. . Rooms were also OK and clean- everything worked.Overall this was a great trip.

Dear customer:

Please let us know your opinion and experience in the period in which they stay at our facility. Indeed as you mention we are a country that we care hygiene cautiously, keeping a tight grip on the washing and sanitizing of all meats and vegetables, made by our doctors daily sampling of food a day to maintain good health our customers and our reputation. The Atlantic Hotel is old, small but friendly welcomes anyone who wants to feel at home as our staff has an admirable preparation and charisma. The management is proud that her trip to our country and the Atlantic hotel was great.

Great deal to visit La Habana and have the tranquility of the beach.
Free shuttle 2 times per day to go visit La Habana. Great beach, beautiful sand and water.
Food acceptable...nothing fancy. You need to reserve and go to the grill-restaurant near the beach. Much better than the buffet.
You have to give tips to barmen and waiters, they will REAAAALLLYYY appreciate that and we'll be thankful.

if you want to be as close as possible to havana with a beautiful beach, then this is the place. only 20 minutes away from havana and the beach here is beautiful. However, the hotel does have some issues. Food is just tolerable and gets the job done to fill the stomach!! Service corresponds with the star rating. Rooms are clean and adequate. however, there are no elevators in the hotel. They have some very nice dance shows in the evenings which are worth getting involved in for entertainment. If you are a 'cancun' type of person, you would never go here. But if you like Cuba, then you will come back again!!
