An exceptional quality in Cuba, hard to come by even in Hawana.
Lovely historical interior and facade, elegant rooms, tasty breakfast. European standard service, even a Wi-Fi!
A nice pool, but unfortunately closing at 6pm. Also - internet access codes run out before noon, get one in the morning!

Stayed: April 2014, travelled as a couple

Old Grand Hotel, lot of history and culture. So it need lot of updating, like plumbing and rooms. Excellent location, close to all old Havana attractions, you can walk to anywhere. Basic but good breakfast. Lot of good music quite often. Great lobby, but most of the rooms are not that great, but you don't spend much time in there anyway. Good air conditioning.

Room Tip: Corner rooms or on the outside are probably better, especially on upper floors.

I agree with the other reviewers. A good hotel, a lovely pool area. The rooms are a bit hit and miss..a few smells, not the cleanest, perhaps peeling paint, a small area of mould on my ceiling, but on the whole, the beautiful common areas, the live music, the lovely little bar on the ground floor and the lobby...plus the wonderful breakfast with music on the 9th floor looking out over the city with 180 degree views of the sea...
I would happily recommend and go back. I stayed on two different occasions in May and feel it is a "reliable and relaxing" choice of hotel.

We stayed on the second floor in one of the internal patio rooms - probably because of this we had some issues with humidity smells that came back every time we left the room`s window closed for more than a couple of hours.

Positive
- Very central location
- Tour and beach buses stop in front of the hotel
- Good and varied breakfast
- Very clean (even with all the humidity)
- Silent AC

Neutral
- Possibility to have breakfast before "normal hours" (although only old pieces of bread and coffee were served)
- Relaxing pool with free towels
- Food in the Patio was generally good (although very slow to be served), but you should avoid at all costs the Pizzas
- Live music everyday, almost all day long - a little bit too loud and so it could be heard in the bedrooms, but still very entertaining

Negative
- 220V outlets were available in the room, but unfortunately were too loose to be used safely and effectively
- Although "fast" internet was available in the hotel lobby, we were only able to get one voucher, as in all other attempts to buy them we were faced with weird apologies from the staff (why they just didn't say they run out instead of telling us "they'll be available in 10 minutes" or "its not working" - when we saw other people using it...)

Room Tip: If possible avoid the Patio rooms and choose one with external windows and on a floor as high as pos...

Stayed 4 days at the end of April with my family and I have the following comments :
The overall feeling is good, nice building which is old but the lobby has character . It is very close to the center of Havana, a few streets away only from Obispo, with lots of restaurants around the corner.
The room we had on the 8th floor was a family room consiting of two adjoining rooms, so plenty of space, the beds were confortable, the room was a bit on the oldfashioned side but acceptable. The bathroom was also old looking as other reported with broken tiles and rust stains in the bath, could be better but it was clean. The airco worked well, however it smelled really bad of sewage when it was off, that was a real put off when coming back to the room, the airco system should be checked (I mentionned it at the reception, hope it's being done for other travellers).
The breakfast downstairs was good, there was enough choice to satisfy each of us, the breakfast room with the open windows on the square is very charming. I saw that there was a breakfast room on the 9th floor for VIPs (whatever that means), the view from the 9th floor was lovely but don't know if the breakfast was the same as downstairs.
The pool area was tidy and clean, we really enjoyed a refreshing dip after a day in the heat of the city and there were enough loungers for everybody. Only had drinks at the pool restaurant/bar so cannot comment on the food.
The patio inside is very nice especially in the evening when there is a band playing Cuban music, the service was fine as well.
Overall the staff were helpful, except at the tourist desk downstairs where we did not feel very welcome when asking about tour possibilities, maybe the man was having a bad day that day and the day after when we returned.
We tried the Wifi and bought a card for 4.50 cuc for one hour, wifi worked actually rather well, especially compared to other places we stayed in after our time in Havana (Cienfuego, varadero and trinidad), so that is a bonus for the hotel.
The main reason for booking this hotel was the Accor affiliation and the fact that it was centrally located with a pool, we liked the hotel and I gave a rating of 'very good' because I thought that 'average' was a bit harsh, if there was an inbetween I would say it was just good for the fact that the bathroom and room was a bit tired looking and I expected better from Accor. Unless some renovations are done in the bathrooms and unless the smell is fixed on the 8th floor I would probably opt for a different hotel in the same area with a pool.

We stayed here for two nights at the start of the pearl of the carribean tour.
The hotel has a great atmosphere, live music which is a great part of Cuban life. The bathroom was rather old fashioned but this is Harvana and not DuBai.
The staff were friendly and helpful and enjoyed breakfast siting by an open window watching all the old cars pass by and children on their way to school.
A lovely colonial hotel.

The overall quality of hotels in Cuba is basic at best, so I booked this hotel with no expectations. As a member of the Mercure group I assumed this would be a safe, clean and standard hotel for a single female traveller.

The location was great. Very centrally located allowing great access to many tourist attractions. Close enough to the main promenade and beach front. Easy access to Old Havana and its updated tourist area. Several museums and attractions all within walking distance. Really felt in the heart of the city, where everywhere was reachable.

The hotel its self was old yet relatively well maintained for Havana. The main lobby offers WIFI at a price that seemed to be the standard cost for Cuba hotels. A Lobby bar provided reasonable price snacks and drinks always with a catchy salsa band and dancing for guests entertainment. I stayed in a basic, twin bed standard room, which did have a cot available. The bedding was clean, fresh and adequate for post travel sleep, nothing fancy or overly lush, but reasonably comfortable for a good nights sleep. Noise wasn't an issue from my room, however I was on the 7th floor away from street traffic noise. Bathroom facilities were again basic, old staining noted to tiles and bath rim but completely functional with toiletries provided.

The most valuable part of my stay, was the friendliness and attentive service provided by the hotel PR Manager. As a single traveller with limited Spanish and new to Cuba, I found this service invaluable. The manager assisted with lost luggage, including many phones calls and direct interaction with otherwise unfriendly airport staff. They always arranged reliable and safe taxis. Could offer a range of acticities or suggested attractions with the details (who, what, when, where) and all this with a smile. They were all very approachable and easy to talk with. This service really made my stay.

While I did feel the hotel slightly over priced, in comparison to other placed visited in Cuba, the general cleanliness, staff service and great location made this hotel worth the stay.
