This classic hotel has been brought up to modern standards and is a good choice in Havana. It is close to most of the sites you want to see in Havana, and is comfortable. Just across the street from a nice park, a block from the capital building, and just a few blocks to the waterfront. Good selection for breakfast, and the has a charming "sidewalk cafe" in front that is great for watching the wonderful old American cars that go by, as well as the people. Prices for using the minibar in the room are very moderate, making it inexpensive to enjoy a drink or two there without having to call room service or go to the bar. There is only one small elevator in the hotel, but it has only three stories so it was a pretty easy walk up if one chose to do so. The rooms have very high ceilings, and our room had a small balcony as well. I would certainly recommend it, and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Some people we were traveling with had rooms on the third floor, and had various problems with them...

Our group stayed at the Hotel Telegrafo at the front and back end of our travels (total of 4 nights). Positioned of the main street it is centrally located across from a park dedicated to Jose Marti and within walking distance (if you are a walker) to the museums, restaurants, and the capital. Upon first impressions, the Telegrafo has at late 1930’s-40’s look and feel that is well represented in the architecture. The lobby is a step back in time with the hotel s history captured in some great photographs. The only elevator (yep just one) is an adventure unto itself. It takes a slight coaxing touch of the buttons before it responds to your floor selection and moves with the speed of a snail. When the elevator doors open on your floor you are met with the distinct smell of stale cigar, cigarette smoke and mildew. This was expected due to the hotel age, and being in a country where tobacco is a significant part of the culture. Once in my room, I found it to be spacious and clean with the typical hotel amenities. There were a few minor things not working and a bug or two was spotted in the bathroom (covering the drains in the sink and tub addressed that issue) and the stale cigar smell a little less potent. However, once the air conditioning turned on the smell became overwhelming. To reduce the smell I sprayed the room with my traveling bottle of Febreeze. It did not help! I considered such a strong smell was because the room looked onto the courtyard where the bar was located. However, after mentioning this to others in our group (some smokers) and whose rooms faced the street they indicated noticing the same strong smells. Good thing – I was not going to spend a significant amount of time in the hotel room. Bad thing – the smell did not make for a good night’s sleep. So if you are a traveler who is sensitive to smells, especially when sleeping, take note.
Overall the Telegrafo was nice but average. The restaurant/bar staff was great, the room maid pleasant with an infectious smile (loved her rain boots), and the bathroom attendant at the bar was a smiling energetic 82 years young; well she was just fabulous and loving life. The image of her singing while cleaning still brings a smile to my face.

Room Tip: Select a room that faces the streets, so you can do people watching at night. Rooms that have windo...

This is a beautiful hotel, the staff was very helpful. I think it is important for travelers to remember where they are. This isn't a newly opened hotel in New York, it is an old building working it's way up to being an amazing place to stay. It is a bit worn around the edges, but they are currently remodeling the entry, showing their dedication to the future.
Our rooms were always clean with a handwritten note every day. The first room we had was enormous with 2 sets of french doors looking out to the corner intersection, what a treat! We did have to keep the curtains closed so the room wasn't too hot. The second room (after coming back from Trinidad) was much smaller and much cooler. My conclusion on this is that each room has the same size air vent, so if you want a cool room make sure it's a smaller room.

I had big expectations, the rooms are high ceiling and very beautiful. Excellent location, 2 minutes from the capitol.Although there was a window, I couldn't open it because it was so hot, yet the room had a strong smell of humidity and lack of ventilation and use. It was only a night before an early morning flight, chose not to return for my longer stay. Went to a casa, cheaper price and much better quality.

I was in Havana for 4 nights at the hotel Telegrafo. All together there were 5 of us and during that time we celebrated a friend's birthday where we were given a complementary bottle of champagne.

The staff at the hotel were helpful and our rooms came with a few mirrors, which is a bonus for 2 & 3 women sharing. There were some minor stains on our white towels and sheets but they were clean - I don't think they have 'Vanish' there yet.

A good selection of food was at breakfast and the guy that made our omelettes was always smiling and even remembered how I like my eggs. They play live music every morning too, which made breakfast time pleasant. My only critique here is that the smell of cooking oil is really strong and lingers onto the lobby area which attaches to your clothes.

If you get the chance, try the hotel's seafood salad. Very refreshing on a hot day.

The location of the hotel made it really easy to walk and experience the full of character and historical attractions old Havana has to offer.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Although you can change your money at the hotel, the bank (15 min walk from the hotel) has a better rate. It gets hot in there so take a fan and your passport for proof of ID.

Buy your drinks from the local store (5 minute walk). A 2ltr bottle of water is 1 CUC whereas the hotel charges 1.50 CUC for a 50cl bottle.

Check out the pool at the Iberostar, (2 minute walk). You are unable to use their main roof top facilities as it's for their guests only, but you can use the one towards the back of their building for free until 7pm as long as you have your guess pass with you and buy a drink.

Warning:

On our first night in Havana, we got talking to this Cuban guy named 'Alberto' who happened to be on his way home from working in another hotel, he said he would take us around and show us a few things about Old Havana. We ended up at Rosalia De Castro bar - we now believe he gets commission for bring people there. We paid for drinks including his at 5 CUC a pop (Mojitos were cheaper at the hotel). By the end of the night, he was telling us about having to buy milk for his baby at 12 CUC a packet and when we gave him money for it, he seemed quite disappointed and said the milk was actually 18 CUC. With his obvious annoyance he ordered another drink which was put on our tab and helped himself to our cigarettes. The reason why I mention this is because, the following day we had another guy come up to us in the same way with the same story.

Avoid using the hotel phone if you can, my friend need to call the bank in London and she ended up spending almost 40 CUC for a call that lasted less than 10 minutes.

Overall, I would say that the location of the hotel was better than the hotel itself but we were there to experience Havana, which we certainly did and that made and critique we had, a minor one.

The location is perfect, we had a great views across from the park. They have a good selection for breakfast and a nicely decorated lobby and courtyard/bar.

Unfortunately there are a couple of major issues...

Customer service is non-existent and the front desk staff are rude and unhelpful
Areas of the hotel are in need of maintenance i.e. cracked window panes, broken lift buttons
Broken toilet seat, missing sink and bath plugs in our bathroom
The bed was hard and the sheets were not fitted

We stayed for 2 nights in Havana at the Telegrafo.
It's in a great location right in one of the main squares.
The room we had was beautiful, huge ceiling and 2 balconies looking out into the square and the busy traffic. The room was clean and it had a safe.
The food was ok and staff were nice.

We would stay here again if in Havana
