I had spent many fine moments back in 2005. It is still as fine, but.....
One can sit very good on the terrace, enjoy the music or the things happening on the plaza. The food, we took some small dishes for lunch, was quite good and the service nice. So far so good:
- we asked for mineral water, not checking the menu and expecting to pay the same as everywhere. They brought us Acqua Panna, from Italy in a glass bottle (my sustainable heart ached). For which we had to pay CUC 4. At a later stage we noticed they also have the regular Cuban water. Ok, our fault;
- A dish of bread with oil arrived which I waved away since I had not ordered it. Later we found the same dish on the bill;
- The bill was made up and counted CUC 28,25. We did the same addition and came to CUC 18,25. Obviously calculation is not their strength :-).
The next day we just had an espresso on the plaza. Again, not looking into the menu. We enjoyed the cup witnessing a neighbor getting German beer. He refused and then received the normal beer. When we asked the waiter to pay he said CUC 5 which was amazingly high (normally it would be around CUC 1,50-2,00). We protested and he mentioned that it was because of the nice place, the nice view. We asked for the menu. Instead a receipt was given - by somebody else - for CUC 2,40.
So please enjoy the things described in the first sentences and always check the menu, for every item you want to consume and count the bill. It can be a sport since these Cubans (working in state companies) are inventive and challenging!!
We had another encounter of the same kind at a state owned restaurant (Habaguanex seems to be the chain), where we did not check the Mojito price and it was CUC 4!!
