This hotel was recommended to us, it states to be a 5 star hotel but to US standards this would rate as a 3 star hotel, we did experience power outages but from what I understand this is very common in Cuba, food in the hotel restaurants was good, but had better meals in Old Havana. This hotel is about 20 minutes from Old Havana. Staff was 50:50 some staff was very friendly and helpful others were rude and would not give you the time of day. The pool area was the best part of this hotel, the hotel is on the beach but do to the rocks you would be putting your life at risk. For me my next visit to Cuba I would stay in Old Havana that is where all the action is. The Cuban residents are extremely friendly and for the most part it is safe in Old Havana.

Arriving in the dark in the middle of a power outage reminds you that you are in another country. The staff were overwhelmed by this, and couldn't provide a light or accompaniment to the room three floors up. Thankfully, when the power did come on we could see that this place was not too shabby. It is on the beach, though not for swimming. And has a large but cold pool. It has a great free shuttle into old Havana which we used often. It is about a 30 minute trip. The breakfast has lots of options, for Cuba. There is a good restaurant across the street, and the area other than that is pretty vacant. So if you are looking for nightlife, shopping, or action, this might not be the place for you.

Myself and my boyfriend have just returned from a 3 night stay at this hotel, and I have to say I was very impressed. Upon arrival, we were escorted to our room with a fantastic view of the sea, and were also given a free bottle of champagne and box of chocolates as we were travelling as a couple which we thought was a nice touch. Our stay at this hotel was actually split into a 2 night stay, interrupted by a week at a beach resort elsewhere in Cuba, returning to the Melia Habana for a final night. Both rooms we were given were clean, comfortable, incredibly spacious, and both with an amazing view of the city and sea.

Bus service to the city centre was punctual and efficient. However, I would warn others that the bus does not drop you near major tourist attractions such as the capitolio etc, so you may decide you need to take a taxi into the very heart of Havana if you aren't quite au fait with getting around on foot. Also, locals have cottoned on to the fact that tourists are dropped off here and so expect to be harassed when leaving the bus. This, of course, is not the hotel's fault but is something to be aware of.

Staff were helpful but not especially friendly, neither in the reception nor restaurants. Pool was lovely, with free lilos provided and a swim up bar. Perfect for a dip after a hot day sightseeing in Havana!

Thank you for making our stay in Havana special. Would recommend to anyone wishing to come and see this wonderful city.

We stayed in the hotel for 4 nights which was the right amount of time to really experience Havana and the free bus to the center of the town was very convenient and made the distance you were away from the center bearable.
The hotel has a large pool which was busy when we were there and we did not use it as we preferred to go to the city to explore Havana itself.
There were plenty of dining options in the hotel, the rooms were somewhat dated however you have to remember you are not in a developed country. It was very clear and the staff were attentive and very friendly.
Credit cards are not widely accepted and the hotel puts on a surcharge - American Express card is a no go area FYI,
Overall the hotel served completely our needs and whilst billed as a five star property that it is not but we were happy.

The hotel is a bit too big, with large and spacious nicely furnished rooms, dining hall and reception area. It is fairly clean, given plenty unused space, and the services is reasonably good. The room maids are eager to impress you with towel decoration, but also eager to be paid for that. I especially enjoyed the food and live salsa music during the meals. considering the hotel capacity the pool is quite small, but one can enjoy a cocktail and hang around instead of struggling in the pool. The reception desk is definitely a weak point as few employees speak any foreign languages except Spanish. A security guard can also be a annoyance if you want to bring in a friend from outside of hotel. A small tourist office is almost useless, so have your homework done before you take off to Havana.

Room Tip: Ask for the room overlooking the Atlantic coast or the swimming pool - really great view!

Dear Anna:

Thank you very much for posting your review about our Meliá Habana. It has been a pleasure to verify you enjoyed our large and spacious rooms decorated to your taste, and also our meals, live music and pool.

Sorry that the reception staff who greeted you at the time could not communicate with you in your language, but just knowing another language is one of the prerequisites for a position as a receptionist and here we have who speak English, French, Italian, German and Russian. However, we find very useful your observation because alerts us to take action to prevent the recurrence fact, means that in a given moment there is not present any to speak the language required by the client.

The fact that visitors are not allowed in the rooms is a safety action for the clients. If you want to add somebody in your room, you can, but you must register at reception and pay for it.

We hope that these details do not constitute an obstacle to your return to our hotel, so we remanin wainting to say you welcome again on your next visit to Havana!

Horrendously expensive internet.
Breakfast is ok and bar food is nice.
Staff reminded me of service in the Eastern Bloc in the 70s but at least they smiled.
The hotel is rather like a concrete car park with windows.
Agree with others that the pool is nice.
