“Wonderful art”

So much to see in Havana in a limited time but this also gives a different aspect to life and culture rather than just seeing old buildings and plazas.

“The Best in Contemporary art in Cuba”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2014

Completely refurbished in reopened in July 2001, this museum does not seem to be part of Cuban life and is a reflection of the government's continuous investment in art and culture that should make American's question our own priorities.

That said, the museum has not changed a single painting since they were originally purchased and hung for the opening. Beautifully arranged, there needs to be some critical scholarship, international exhibitions, and gift shop is a huge wasted opportunity for the Cubans to sell art and thereby support the artists.

“Two Parts to this Museum: see the Cuban half.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes has been split into two sections, one devoted entirely to Cuban Art in a "new" (1950's) building, the other to "International Art", in a 19th century building on the Parque Central. Although the International half has a few good things in it (located in a building with a sumptuous turn-of-the century staircase and interior courtyard), it is the Cuban Art Collection in the other building that is of greets interest to the international art investigator and collector. The museum takes you from the late colonial era, through the blossoming of Cuban art in the 1920´s and 30´s under the influence of French impressionism and Cubism, leading up to the distinctively Cuban works by the likes of Pelaez and Lam, all the way to Contemporary Art where Cuba continues to excel drawing inspiration both from its Afro heritage and the spirit of the Revolution of the 1950's. A tour of this museum is highly recommended, as is the book edited by Sonia Maldonado González that details the principle elements of its collection.

“Beautiful Art.”

The Air Conditioning makes this stop well worth your while. We enjoyed the fountains, and the collection is well worth a visit.
