“Little known secret luxury hotel in Havana”
Reviewed 14 January 2013

There are only fourteen rooms in this lovely and private boutique hotel in Havana. It looks out over the Malacon and is removed from the hustle and bustle of Havana. Interestingly, I was ready with ear plugs, did not experience any sleep disruption due to noise, as a previous reviewer wrote. Breakfast is included, with espresso service, and I enjoyed the fact that only hotel guests are present in the small lobby and restaurant (great security). I spent my last night at the Hotel Saratoga, which is more of a "luxury hotel", but I am glad that the bulk of my nights were spent at Terral.

two recommendations for management: 1)improve the water pressure in the showers; and 2) insert the glass in the restaurant table tops.

Room Tip: we have the two top floor suites (411 and 412). Large rooms and spacious terrace.

We stayed in three hotels in Cuba, including the Hotel Nacional - this was by far the best.

The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the location looking out to sea across the Malecon is brilliant.

We had one of the junior suites on the fourth floor, which we highly recommend. It was a huge set of rooms, with a lovely bed, a sofa, a dressing room, and all the usual appurtenances (except Wi-Fi, but that's hard to come by in Cuba). It was possible to sit in bed and look out to sea, or sit on the large terrace. The finish on the room was much better than anywhere else we found in Cuba.

It is a busy road outside, but from the fourth floor it was no trouble to us, and having just flown from Europe we slept soundly until well into the morning. We then had a very pleasant, and very filling, breakfast.

The food was excellent too. Seafood was the speciality, and in the evening we had a mixed seafood dish that was just lovely. The restaurant is very small, so booking is a good idea.

We just wished we could have stayed longer.

Room Tip: There is an extra charge for the junior suites, but it is not much. Treat yourselves!

We had four wonderful nights in Terral. It did not start to well though. Wen we arrived at 10 pm after a long journy from Norway, we were met by the manager who said we could not have the room due to electric problems. It might have been that they had overbooked, but since I don't know I will not hold it against them. We were sent to Hotel Presidente with a complimentary dinner. After two nights there, we were picked up and sent back to Terral. We got a free lunch when we arrived and a free dinner incl wine in the evening.
Let's start with the rooms. We had a standard room on the 2nd floor. Everything is brand new, and the room is tastefully decorated. All the rooms have balconies facing the Malecon and the sea. Big bathroom with good waterpreassure. Plenty of storagespace, and the bed was fantastic.
We had no problems with noice from the street, and my girlfriend is a light sleeper.
The food here is really great. By far the best food we had during the month we spent around Cuba. Even if you are not staying here, it is worth to pop in for a lunch or dinner. You might want to book ahead, since the restaurant only have five or six tables.
The staff is very helpful and friendly, and they speak english very well.
If we go back to Havana, there is no question where we will stay.

This is an almost excellent hotel. what makes it great is the beautiful rooms, the great setting, the excellent and well priced food in the restaurant and most of all the divine staff, who could not be more helpful or accommodating to every guest's needs. Here is the main problem: They did not use double paned glass on the windows during the renovation. The result is that your rooms sound like they are situated over a freeway, which the Malecon more or less is. The upper floor rooms (3 and 4) are pretty good. Avoid the first floor at all costs. The rooms on the Eastern end (104, 204, etc) are right over a lamp that illuminates your room at night because the blackout curtains only cover 80% of the windows. Also, like most hotels in Cuba this hotel does not have wireless Internet. Their one computer was not working at the time of our visit. Also, their phone line to the US was broken. This is not the hotel's fault-- it is a Cuba-wide problem. But I hope that by posting it here someone will listen. The kind and generous people who work at this hotel deserve to be supported better by their superiors.

Room Tip: Make sure you are not on the first floor and preferably on 3 or 4

We arrived back in Havana for our last night before leaving the country, with no accommodation booked. We had been staying at casa particulars and decided to treat ourselves on the last night. The first 2 hotels were both full, but they did recommend this one to try in case they had a room. Lucky us! One last room - 402! (must be better than room 304 guys!)
This is definitely a boutique hotel and not a B&B.
Kingsize bed, outdoor veranda and lounger chairs, dressing gowns, flatscreen and cable TV
Forget all the other hotels - this was bliss! The service, the decor, the comfort, the space - the view! Oh and the breakfast included! more like brunch!
Nothing could have been nicer, - except if we could have stayed longer.
Yes the price is up there, but not as high as some of the other older hotels.
And Ariel the barman is a great guy for a chat and his mojito's definitely the best we had.

As a previous reviewer mentioned this is not an Inn or B&B but a 4 star hotel.
My partner and I booked to stay at Hotel Telegrafo during our trip to Havana. When we arrived we were told that our room was not available due to flooding (we didn't believe this was true) and that we would be taken to another hotel of equal rating (4 star). As a result we arrived at Hotel Terral in a particularly grumpy mood. On the outside the hotel is modern but very unpreposessing -compared to some other historic hotels in town this looks like a let-down. We were also suspicious of the fact that no one (including the taxi driver) knew about it, given that there are not that many hotel in Havana and in general they are known to locals. This is just because the hotel is relatively new though, so do not be put off. When we entered the room we started mellowing... First of all, the room was of a very generous size. Everything was new, clean and of good quality (especially for Cuban standards!). We had two double beds beautifully made up with clean and crisp linen. The beds were also very comfortable, with good quality mattresses and pillows (again, this is not a given in Cuba). The bathroom was big, elegant and clean. But the best of all were the views: the hotel is on the Malecon (the only decent hotel on the Malecon I think), and it boasts amazing sea views from all its rooms. We were offered a welcome cocktail as soon as we arrived, so the combination of views and the drink definitely helped up warm to our forced relocation. I also must mention the very friendly, polite and professional staff who coped with our intense annoyance in having to stay at a hotel other than the one we booked. The location is great for walks and sunsets by the sea, and not too far from the old town. The only problem is that the rooms are quite noisy. The Malecon is not only a romantic drive, but also a busy street (again, for Cuban standards). Unfortunately, though everything else in this hotel has been refurbished to high standards, there is no double glazing. That means that sleeping is a bit of a challenge if you struggle with noise...
Once you do sleep though, you wake up -and then you have breakfast. And then you are, again, very happy! The chef is brilliant and the breakfast is very plentiful and of excellent quality. You have a choice of dishes which are all prepared fresh and are very good indeed. We had fresh fruit, yogurt, omelettes and cheese toasties, and lovely pancakes (called hot cakes on the menu).
If you are not a very light sleeper you will enjoy Terral a lot. It is one of the best hotels in Havana (much better than Telegrafo, by the way, where we were unfortunately made to return!)

Dear Customer:
We greatly appreciate that you have taken time to comment your opinion about our hotel. The nice thing about the description given by you comforts us, your satisfaction is the main reason for our work.Unfortunately there are issues for which we have no solution, is the case of being next to a busy avenue. But you do not worry, if you visit us again, we will assign you a room in our higher floors. Besides I commented to you that in the month you visit us Carnivals were held in Havana, This celebration takes place on the Malecon exactly where we are located, this brought as a consequences that feel much noise in the hotel. We apologize for this and hope that on your next visit you can sleep well.
I send my best wishes and we hope to see you again.
Yuni

First of all, this has been misclassified here as an "Inn or B&B" -- it is neither but, rather, a full-service hotel directly on El Malecon in Havana and the first of its kind in Cuba.

A group of eight of us stayed here on the first nights this hotel was opened to the public, in May 2012 for the Art Biennale.

El Terral is the name of the breeze that comes across the Havana Bay. You will certainly enjoy this beautiful breeze from the balcony of your hotel room. Be sure to request an ocean view.

The hotel is perhaps the first true design-ish boutique hotel in Havana and definitely is the first -- and only -- hotel directly on the enchanting Malecon (seawall overlooking the ocean), which is often called Havana's living room. That is a good thing if you want to be in the middle of the action, and a terrible thing if you want to sleep on weekends.

I reviewed this hotel on the Cuba forum when it first opened. Here are highlights of that review:

The best room is 304, it has two balconies, both overlooking the Malecon and el Morro castle. West and southwest exposure. Huge king bed. Huge room. Separate bathroom and dressing area.

It's a modern design hotel, one of many I imagine will pop up on the Malecon in due time. The Malecon is extremely noisy on weekends, so don't expect a quiet sleep. Also the traffic will wake you early.

In the morning it is gorgeous to sit in the little lounge area and look over the Malecon for breakfast. There's a great breakfast in the morning that's included. Eggs, fruit, juice de fruta bomba.

It would be great if it had a rooftop bar or restaurant.

At night, you can have dinner in one of the four booths but because it is the only lit place on the Malecon you are in a bit of a fishbowl. Nothing to see out (at dark) and everyone looking in.

The staff is very good and motivated, no attitude, no apathy. When we left at 5 a.m. for the airport the staff saw us off, having made us little sandwiches. Concierge service was great. Front desk took myriads of messages for us by phone and transcribed them into English as well.

Pillows were horrible foam but the mattress was the best I've slept on in Havana. It didn't sink in the middle. Even at the Hotel Nacional it sinks!

Oh and the showers -- great hot showers. Really a nicely built place. Would definitely stay there again.

PROS

Beds, staff, breakfast, proximity to both Vedado and Central Havana.

Huge rooms.

Gorgeous view of the sea, amazing breezes!

Hot, plentiful showers (a rarity in Havana).

CONS

Malecon car traffic will wake you in the morning.

Malecon party people will keep you up on weekends until 4 a.m.

No place to hang out or lounge at night (you CAN hang out in tiny lounge but it's not fun).

No rooftop bar! This place screams for a rooftop bar!

In short, we would definitely stay here again especially if Room 304 is available. It's amazing.
