“Nice hotel”
Reviewed 29 August 2014

Spent 2 nights here. Beautiful room, clean and spacious. Free wifi which was reliable and quick - something of a rarity in Cuba we later came to learn. The rooftop pool is beautiful but unfortunately closes quite early in the evening. It would have been nice to have had an evening dip after a day of exploring the city in the heat. Also the sink in our room was blocked and the drain in the shower was also blocking up but these are just minor things as the building is quite old and typical of havana and to be expected I guess. Breakfast over priced and only average quality. Would stay again

We booked into the Hotel Saratoga and loved staying here in Old Havana.

It's central to all the walking activities you want to do around Old Havana. The rooms are spacious - we were given one of the internal rooms so it was very quiet although disappointing they put opaque windows in the French doors overlooking the interior - normal glass would be OK as they have heavy curtains during the night.

The bathroom and amenities are excellent and well serviced by the staff. there is a tourist service to organise any trips you would like to do whilst in Havana or organise your transport to other parts of Cuba.

The concierge service will book you great restaurants for you evening meals - recommending different ones well within strolling distance of the hotel.

The best aspect of this hotel is the rooftop pool - it is a fantastic space to relax in the afternoon heat after strolling around different parts of Havana during the morning. The view of Havana here is well worth the visit - take your camera up there for some photos looking at The Capital Building and old Havana stretches out before you.

I can thoroughly recommend Hotel Saratoga.

This hotel has old world charm in a great location. We had a junior suite which was spacious and an excellent up to date bathroom. The room was clean and serviced daily. Air conditioner worked well which was a relief in the Havana heat. We had dinner the first night in the hotel which was tasty and acceptable and reasonably priced (though obviously you can get cheap eats elsewhere outside of the hotel). Breakfast was a pretty good buffet or you can order some items off the a la carte menu. Staff needed some reminding about coffee orders, etc but they were never rude and always friendly. The pool on the roof is a superb retreat after walking the wonderful streets of Havana. The furniture has just been updated providing a much more pleasant experience by the pool. We had lunch and numerous cocktails by the pool - very nice! The concierge Jorge is extremely competent and helpful: he organised a number of dinners in fine quality paladores (home restaurants) which were superb. Listen to his advice, he is great! Free wifi was also much appreciated.

Based on a lot of the positive reviews and the fact many well known celebrities stayed here, we chose to stay at the Saratoga. It's location was probably the only positive point, as it's in the heart of the old town. However given the political context, it's probably what's considered locally to be upmarket. Smoking is still allowed in rooms and through the hotel, so there's a musty smell throughout. At breakfast, tea and water are poured as you need it, not left out openly, again playing to the heritage. I wouldn't stay here again, it's very tired and quite noisy as the suites face the road. Choose a cheaper room if you want quiet! Also, you will need to pay cash after any transaction instead of adding to your hotel bill at the end (laundry, room service etc).

I loved the building. This was my first impression. The old style architecture gives a glimpse of one side of the old style Cuba. OK so it is relatively expensive but the experience is worth it. Shortages are evident even here for example some items on the menu for the evening meal may not be available that night but run with it. The Maitre'd was very helpful suggesting alternatives and the meals were excellent including the fine wine. All the staff were very helpful and accommodating. The rooms are well furnished and I have never seen such an extensive mini bar in the fridge. Not that I indulged, I preferred cocktails downstairs, but they even had Toblerone chocolate "bars". A nice comforting touch. All of our party (3 groups) had rooms overlooking the atrium but for me this was not a problem. If you want a view go to the roof pool. The hotel is near the old quarter (come out of the hotel turn right walk a couple of blocks and turn right again to find obispo "street") Take care: In Havana in some areas many people ask for money. More importantly if you go out walking even in day time then take precautions. Within 15 minutes walk you can drift in to areas where you you may be vulnerable from opportunist theft.

I have stayed at all the top hotels in Havana in the last year and this is by far the best of the bunch. Admittedly, Cuba needs to allow more foreign hotel chains to really manage their properties and not have a shadow Cuban management, restrictive foreign exchange rules, and limited opportunities to buy needed supplies or fire bad workers...

Irrespective of the many challenges of running a hotel, this hotel is elegantly designed from an old building, has reasonably good and safe food, is well located right across from the "Capitolio" building and has a great senior management - The GM is the best of any of the hotels in Cuba. It is also the hotel where celebrities (including Beyonce and Jay -Z) prefer to stay. Need I say more? OK - so it has by far the best free wifi of any hotel in Havana! and you can buy a shot of Johnnie Walker Blue at the bar....

Excellent hotel in Havana. Though i expected more given its reputation.
Lovely room. very nice bathroom! hotel is lovely. pool and bar on the rooftop. but as with any rooftop pool in a city center hotel, was small. excellent views however!
It is one of the better hotels in the center of the old city though!
Out room opened out to the interior courtyard, which was disappointing.
Free Wifi which is a big novelty in Cuba!

Room Tip: try to ensure you are 3rd floor or higher.
