“Ditto "not ready for prime time"”
Reviewed 17 March 2014

It's funny that two of the five reviews on TA since the Capri reopened say "not ready for prime time", because that is exactly how I described it when I was there. Our tour group stayed there at the last minute when we were inexplicably bumped from the Melia Cohiba. The decor stays true to the late 50's (don't get me wrong, it is new furniture). I stayed on the 14th floor. The elevators never worked well. The showers seemed to be designed for maximum water on the floor. The front desk was always running out of CUC. The air conditioner was really noisy. On the plus side, the restaurant food was good and I liked the variety of the breakfast buffet. I also liked their rooftop bar. The staff seemed eager to please. I think this could be a good place to stay, in time as they get the kinks out.

We did not stay at the Capri but took a look for future reference. We have been curious as we have watched the construction/renovations on this building for years.

We looked at a junior suite which was comfortable and very spacious - the nicest hotel room I have seen in Cuba (and I have stayed in many hotels here). The lobby is beautiful as are the lounge and lobby bar. The restaurant at the top was so lovely that we would have eaten there had we not already eaten at the restaurant on the bottom floor; the view is unmatched by all except perhaps La Torre on top of the Focsa building, but the windows here were open with a warm breeze which made it hard to leave.

We had meals in the lobby bar and the restaurant below (the food comes from the same kitchen). The food was very good (which is why we returned the second time).

Service was excellent from all the staff we met - especially Yusnely and Williams in the restaurants and Jorge the manager. They recognized us from a nearby hotel where we had stayed previously, and went out of their way to treat us well. They even arranged for the musicians (amazingly talented, even by Cuban standards) to play a song especially for us. ¡Muchas Gracias! We will definitely be back!

Dear guest.
Thank you to take the time to write this wonderful review, and say, that you have seen the nicest room in Cuba at Capri Hotel, that our looby bar lounge is beautiful, the lovely "La Florentina" Restaurant at the top roof with its marvelous Habana's view, the tasty food you took in our places, and mostly the excellent service of our staff.
At NH Capri Hotel we wish to see you soon again.

Only 3 floors were ready for occupancy. Our room had a leak in the bathroom from the room above. The shower design insures the bathroom will flood during every shower. That design feature should insure that there will be more leaks from rooms above in the future. The view over the city is quite good (our room was 12th floor.)
Breakfast was good. But the fellow cooking eggs was just learning about egg whites only and nought nothing of mixing a ham omlette and a vegetarian omelette on the grill.
Elevators worked sporadically.
Location at 21st and N is quite good for seeing the sights of the Vedado.
No opinion of cost as we were on a group trip.
This is a 3 star property at best

Though the Capri Hotel is named in all the Havana tourist guidebooks, you will not find many of its reviews on the web or on Tripadvisor. This is not surprising. Indeed, all the guidebooks speak about Capri as a historical hotel built in 1957 and owned by Italian-American mafia, a Hotel that was also the setting of some well known movies (“Our man in Havana”, “The godfather II”, etc). But the guides also say that it is now only a ravaged building in decay.
This is no longer true.

Capri Hotel re-opened on January 2014 after several years of restructuring and I had the pleasure to be the very first guest to sleep again in its rooms with my wife.
It is a modern 19-floor building in the Vedado area, just in front of the well known Hotel Nacional de Cuba and close to the Malecon promenade. It is structured as following:
- A wide and elegant lobby lounge;
- A top-floor pool, with a beautiful view and a bar for cocktails and light lunch (relaxing on the pool while drinking a cocktail and watching the entire city from above really makes you feel like a Mafioso in the fifties) ;
- 2 restaurants. An informal one is in the basement, where breakfast is served. A more elegant one is at the top-floor, with a beautiful view on the city and the pool, offering both Cuban and Italian food. The quality of this restaurant and its chef is considerably higher than the Cuban standards.

Rooms have modern furniture with colors reminding the ’60.
Touches of “Italian-style” reminding the old days of the Hotel are not only in its name, but also in the furnishing and in the food.
The Hotel staff is extremely kind and pleasant.

At the moment of our stay (on the opening day) the Hotel was still in partial working for renovation. Only a few floors were open and the opening of several facilities are still expected in the future (a third restaurant, another bar, a spa/fitness, a direct passage to the adjacent cabaret “Salon Rojo”).
Being in a early start-up stage, it is understandable that some services were still unavailable (ex. wifi) and some inefficiencies and shortages were forgivable.
During the start-up phase the Hotel was managed by the Cuban Gran Caribe state owned hotel group, but it is expected to become part of the NH group in the next future.

Overall, it is a Hotel with a charming history, now totally new and promising to be one of the best in Havana. With high standards comparable to European and north American hotels.
It has been really exciting to be the very first guest of this wonderful hotel!
The future guests, among which I may gladly be included, will have the chance to assess better the complete outcome of the renovation.

Room Tip: Ask for seaview rooms.

The Hotel Capri is a block away from the Nacional and reopened in January 2014. The Nacional is the grandmother of hotels in Havana. Lots of tourists go there to see the place so the lobby is always busy, but the rooms are must and food subpar. Enter the Capri, which is newly opened after a 10 year rehab. It isn't quite ready for prime time yet. For example, the internet doesn't work and the pool isn't open yet. The rooms are only open on a few floors and are nicely appointed. The bathroom is good, but the shower floods the room every time. They clearly have a design issue with the glass divider.

Our room (an odd numbered room) looked over the Nacional and the water so make sure to ask for one on that side of the building. The beds are comfortable, but it was hard to get the air conditioning to cool the room adequately. The hotel halls are very cool though.

The breakfast, which is included, was excellent, particularly the pastry, although it varied from day to day. Sometimes they didn't have money to exchange.

This hotel is a work in progress, but I'd choose it over the Nacional in a heartbeat. Other members of our group were there and complained about the facilities. A clean room, good food and friendly staff made this an enjoyable stay.

Room Tip: Pick an odd numbered room.
