I had 3 nights here from 5th - 8th May 14. This place makes a decent fist of most things, but falls short in some vital areas. The location is pretty good - just about within walking distance of Old Havana and other sites of interest. The breakfast buffet is very accomplished with lots of choice and friendly, attentive staff and the rooms are clean well presented, albeit with showers that don't drain properly. By far the hotel's best asset though is the roof top pool and bar with stunning views and a great bar. Unfortunately, I was only able to enjoy it for part of my stay as the hotel owners opted to close the facility for 3 days in order to host a private cocktail party, which they only informed guests about by leaving a note in the rooms the day before. Very dissappointing to have such a key facility being closed at short notice with no provision of an alternative. Other issues included a lack of gym and spa, concierge service, or any form of tourist information whatsoever - there wasn't even a hotel map, guide or mini bar price list in the rooms. Despite some very good staff, I actually found some of the key desk staff to be not particularly helpful and mostly preoccupied, which I suspect was to do with the event they were hosting. It just felt as though they got lots of little things right, but it didn't have the fundamentals of a 4-star establishment just yet. With the refurb still under way I am sure there is more to come from the Capri yet though.

I have just returned after two separate stays at the Capri. I would agree with Mathew Farrar in much of his comments. The shower problem is a design fault and can be stopped by rolling the bath towel into a tube and laying along the edge of the shower (or bring your own sandbag). The staff were very helpful and I thought Ramese, who runs the bar at the roof top pool, made very good daiquiris - perfect for chilling out early evening with the views and watching the birds of prey soaring around the high buildings. His daiquiris were only bettered by the woman at Sloppy Joes in old Havana who was crowned Queen of Daiquiris in 2013 so a high recommendation. I would stay here again and although the refurbishment is not complete the welcome by the staff makes all the difference.

I don't tend to review hotels, and I'm not a hotel afficionado, but after touring around Cuba and staying in a variety of upscale hotels, I feel inspired to make note of the Hotel Capri. It's clearly a newly re-opened establishment, with renovations still taking place, but bearing that in mind, it was by far my favorite hotel in Cuba. The room where I stayed, on the 14th floor, overlooked the beautiful Verdado district, a quiet and more authentically Cuban neighborhood, 5km or so from the tourist center, Old Havana. An easy walk to the Malecon for breathtaking sunrises and sunsets over the turqouise water, and for me, plenty of incredible little streets to poke around and photograph, including a few beautiful little street markets.

Be sure to take in the incredible rooftop bar and pool! It's the perfect place to spend hot afternoons, lazing about to mellow music (a welcomed change from the thumping party music at all the other pools I visited around the Island), with a breathtaking 360degree view of Havana and the ocean. Even better than the afternoon pool lounging, were the end of the evening drinks I got at the bar. Head up for a masterfully mixed cocktail by Ramses the bartender, who mixed up the best drinks I had during my entire stay on the Island. Not only a master of fine cocktails but his inviting and open disposition made for wonderful, informative, and inspiring conversations as I looked out of the lights of Havana at night! Top Notch!

This hotel has just recently reopened after a major refurbishment. In fact when we were there the room we were sold was not in fact available! There was no Internet in the hotel and no-one in management seemed to have the slightest idea why or how they could get something to work. It seems incredible that a newly refurbished hotel should not have Internet in the rooms. The quality of the finish in the hotel and the furnishings in the rooms were of a low quality.
Generally the staff were friendly and one of the bell boys was first class. Always helpful and always smiling he desrved to be in a better hotel.

Hotel Capri has proved to be a fairly good option for Havana. Open since December 2013, it’s very clear that the hotel is still learning the ropes around international standards and expectations, but then again, most of Cuba is as well.
The hotel is your ‘newest’ or renovated option for Havana - but it’s no world class renovation - it’s a simple modernisation to start up operations and get some money in the door.
Let me start with my critiques - check-in staff have almost no idea and barely work at a pace faster than slow. Every time we’ve requested a double bed (because that’s what married couples do) they don’t seem to have any available.
The rooms a decent in size but it’s where the renovation is poor. The floor tiles have not been replaced, the cupboards and doors have simply been repainted and the general workmanship is very hurried.
The bathrooms were clean and well equipped, I especially enjoyed having a shower under the rain shower head - but I really disliked the drain clogging with water every time I did (this happened in the 2 rooms I showered in, so it much be an issue).
Extending your stay is like pulling teeth. They cannot guarantee the same room and the credit card machines simply don’t work (at least for 3 of my credit cards didn’t - luckily, it was 4th time lucky).
WIFI was extremely painful to obtain (even within the hotel) as Cuba’s government is still very much controlling all internet access, so obtaining a card (for around 3 CUC for 30 minutes) means a walk down the street, line up with your passport.
On the flip side, it was by far one of the best hotels we stayed in Cuba. The bell boys were absolutely brilliant - luggage was swiftly hurried to our room and restaurant options and directions were always offered very swiftly.
The bar staff were fantastic and extremely friendly - I even enjoyed their interest in wanting to brush up on their English speaking skills.
The breakfast spread was great (by Cuban standards anyway) eggs, cereal, cold meats, pancakes, the works - The coffee was even drinkable!
In summary, Hotel Capri's major let down would have to be the location (in my option) being around 5km for Old Havana (for a Havana first timer) can be really annoying, otherwise, for around 5 CUC and 5 minutes in a taxi, you’re easily taken there. I’m confident the’ll continue to improve as time goes on, so if location is not an issue, definitely stay there, as it’s one of the best places Havana has to offer.

Stayed at this hotel from April 13-20 and had a great time; although they still had not opened the gym and no wifi available, there were no public/business computers to contact the outside world; you had to go to the nearby hotel for any internet service.

I had the meal plan (breakfast-dinner) and thought the food and 24-hour bar were genuinely friendly and serviceable. Lots of fresh fruit and Cuban gourmet meals prepared for you on the spot; all bread and baking goods were different every day and made in house w. Of course what made it most exceptional was the people that catered and attended you at all times; they called you last name and remembered your dietary preferences and very accommodating.

Remember to bring a converter to plug in your pc/tablet.

Room Tip: I was facing El Malecon and had a great view of the bay.

View (11th story), cleanliness and functionality were excellent. The lobby wifi connection (very important to me) was fast. When, around midnight, I connected a 110 volt device to the 220 volt socket in my room I caused a blackout. Maintenance fixed the problem immediately at that inconvenient hour. Most important of all was the friendliness of the staff at all levels (reception, rooms, restaurants). Friendliness is a characteristic of the tourism industry in Cuba, but at this hotel they excel. They are genuine and personal. At the breakfast restaurant ask for Yusnely, one of the servers, the friendliest of all.
