The center has a lot of potention, but as the title stands, a lot of restauration must be done. There are some nice squares, but I thought it was a little bit dissapointing.

Compared to Holguin's grit-like the centre is more circular, organic as the streets were designed as a maze.
This was to deter pirates.
The largest city between central and eastern Cuba it sees few tourists and give's a good idea of cuban city life

Centro Storico de Camagüey. Date: November, 2013

I have spent two days in Camaguey (est. 1528), which I think is the minimum time required.

This city of 300,000 has a large size historical center, but if you are able to walk, you can see most of the area on foot. Contrary to many reports, this city is not a maze. If you have a bit of orientation sense and a map (get the guide and map free at the airport), you will not get lost!!

We stayed in a casa about 10 minutes walking distance from the Plaza Carmen and have no problem finding our way back from any point of the old town. That included our night excursion! The city seem safe, but unfortunately, there is not much nightlife.

Catholic religion and the many wonderful churches may outlast Castro. Many are renovated or in process to be renovated with the help of UNESCO money (World Heritage Site since 2008)

We found many places in the Old Quarter under renovation, which proceed in Cuban pace!

Some places, like the major artery of Calle Republica, were unintentionally changed to pedestrian malls, as there are piles of sand and bricks everywhere blocking the road.

There is an actual pedestrian mall ( Calle Maceo), but the shops there will not be of any interest to western tourist, who actually would like to buy something. It will be however be of interest to tourist who want to see what assortment of goods are actually available in these stores.

We have seen perhaps 20 other tourist in the 2 days, so you really get a real Cuban life experience.

It was also the only place on my visits to Cuba, were I could by stuff priced in Cuban pesos.

Delicious ice cream for about $0.10 and Cigars 20 pieces /$1 (identical cigars for offered to us for $2 each on the beach)

If you can not do all the walking, because of the heat or your feet, (we had about 22- 25 c in November) hire a bicycle taxi to take you around.

Take the time to simply walk around and enjoy the architecture and history of this plaza and it's surrounding streets. There are several dining options and a few vendors selling crafts in the plaza.

The city is beautiful, founded in 16th century, parts of it are almost untouched. See it if you can.
