“Shabby rooms”
Reviewed 28 March 2013

Stayed here one night as part of a tour group. Location was okay, but wished it was closer to the squares. Ate dinner and breakfast and it was very disappointing. Dinner was expensive for what we got. Would not recommend eating here. The rooms were okay, but I didn't expect much from what I have experienced elsewhere in Cuba. I would recommend staying in a casa instead as you get much nicer rooms and better food and service. The hotel was very dated. The bar area was very loud and everything echoed.

Stayed in this hotel as part of a tour group so didn't have any choice. Web site claims there are safety deposit boxes available in rooms, this isn't true. Most of the others travelling in our group were concerned about the locks on the doors which were less than secure & could easily have been forced open with little effort. I returned back from a nearby restaurant, unlocked my room door to find the entire contents, apart from a bottle of water & insect repellant gone. My main suitcase, small daypack, clothes by the bed, toilettries all gone. The police said the window had been forced through & looked like this was how the thieves got in. I was staying on the 5th floor so can't see how thieves got in that way & the window was far too small to get my case through, so they brought in the sniffer dog who indicated that my possessions had gone through the door. Whilst waiting for the police to arrive, I had noticed a member of staff came to let in another tourist (not in our group) into their room at the far end of the corridor, as they're door had jammed. After coming out of the bedroom door, the sniffer dog picked up the scent & walked straight down to this room door & barked loudly. However, it found no scent in the room. I mentioned this to the police via my tour rep interpreting, but the hotel receptionist kept interupting trying to change the subject. We are all of the opinion that this was an inside job & the staff member with the master keys who let in the other tourists, was obviously involved, as was the receptionist. He claimed that there was security on the door & only tourists could enter, yet we saw numerous people congregating in the lobby to watch the satellite tv, who didn't appear to be tourists at all.
Just be very careful if you do stay here. You may want to invest in some kind of security meshing for your case or chain it to something solid in the room. You expect to be on your guard in backpacker hostels but not in a hotel which claims to be secure.
