“the best place in cuba to rest in contact with nature.”
Reviewed 29 July 2012

the hotel is excellent and it is in the middle of Forrest, and the food is great also, the bad part is the final route to arrive there. there are 7km of bad route to arrive be careful with your car.the service is excellent also the water fall, but ask before go about if the water is abundant because if you go in the time of little rains you will see an empty water fall.

Room Tip: all the rooms are excellent with view to the river.

You don't need your own transport - we took a taxi from Bayamo for 45CUCs and a taxi onwards to Santiago for 60CUCs (there were 4 of us sharing the cost). The road is only bad on the very last stretch -we had to get out and walk while our taxi struggled up the hill. Once there, we were in heaven. The rooms are spacious with large balconies for relaxing. Trees, plants, flowers everywhere. Lots of birds. You can hike, horse ride, swim under the waterfall in the hotel grounds. The food is buffet style with a different roast every night. If there is a large group staying, there is live music. Mostly it's very quiet. The staff were pleasant, but didn't put themselves out. They ordered our taxi out, and I'm pretty sure they took a cut -we were, after all, captive clients. The room phones are expensive and the one pay phone only takes tokens. They'll help you, but you can see they really want to get back to their conversations..When our taxi arrived, they just called our room to say it was there -we had to get our own cases all the way down the steps to the front.
Take a walk up the steps behind the hotel, turn left at the base of the mirador and up into what looks like private land through the gate. It is, but the people in the house are welcoming and the young man, (who works at the hotel) will show you a circular walk you can do -and help you across the river!). Tercera Frente is worth walking down the road to- very friendly people too. This stop-over was one of the best parts of our 4 week trip. The hotel is very reasonable -we paid 62CUCs a night for a twin room, including breakfast and evening meal for two (January 2012). Should have stayed longer!

We came across this little hotel by chance because we were tired of staying in the crowded cities. I found the name of this hotel in one of our cuba travel books. There was only two sentences about it and so we decided to call ahead and make reservations. Nobody picked up the phone. We were leaving from Santiago to cuba and it was a beautiful highway all the way except for the last 7 kilometers. It took half an hour to do the last 7 because the road was so full of pot holes and it goes through a very small village. We were starting to get worried when we felt as though nothing could be beyond this little vvillage, but eventually we saw a sign and a little later, a gorgous hotel. Now this hotel is made up of about 6 wooden cabins that fit quite a few rooms. It is so lush and it really did make the top of our list of cuba trip highlights. The waterfall that is right beside the last cabin is amazing and you can swim in its green waters. Very refreshing and just like a screen saver. There are many chickens roaming around, we even saw some high up in the trees! We went on a walk through the forest (just like a rain forest) and the guide took us through farms and across the waterfall. The staff was super friendly and really helpful. There are tourbuses that go up to this hotel quite often. Not much canadian publicity, mostly european when we were there anyways. Bottom line, it is totally worth going out of your way to even come for the day. It will make cuba an even better experience. ENJOY!

Room Tip: the rooms right beside the waterfall arebeautil!

Hotel Horizontes Villa El Salton is located on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Maestra, Cuba’s highest mountain range, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and a natural waterfall that is the main feature here. Opened in the 1960s as a health resort for the Cuban Communist Party elite, today it describes itself as eco-resort - I would say it is more a hotel in the rain forest, not a lot of "eco" to be seen.

The setting is in the "Montane rainforest" which surrounds the hotel, and the hotel overlooks a small river. The reason it was built on this site is the natural waterfall and lake below in which you can swim (well my wife did anyway). It is certainly natural as there is no "pampered" way in to the lake, you have to tread on the stony beach to get in, and the going is difficult.

El Saltón has 22 air-conditioned rooms in four buildings. The wood-paneled bedrooms had terrazzo tile floors, and picture windows - but the jungle was inches from the windows, so there was not actually a view! Small satellite TV and (empty) refrigerator. We spent two nights here.

Dinner in the hotel restaurant (eating out is not an option here - the road is bad enough in daylight, and after dark would be impossible). The setting was spectacular but the food fairly dull in the restaurant. Apart from us, the only other guests were a party of 2 German men aged around 60 and their 2 Cuban female "companions" aged around 20!.

We took a nature walk with the hotel guide (2 CUC per person per hour, so 2 hours cost a total of under £6). It was an interesting ramble, he explained the local birds and was a good mimic of their calls. He stopped at a local house where the 80 year old lady lived with a large extended family. An earth floor to the house, and a toilet of sorts down the garden - but they did have a TV set (as did virtually every house in Cuba)

And along the dirt road, the propaganda continued with slogans painted on stones, pipes and anything else that came to hand.
