“Boring”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

We stayed here 4 nights in late February. We had booked this place and paid for it because of the beautiful pictures of the waterfall and the 3 natural pools that we had seen on the internet and on youtube.
When we got there,There was hardly any water in the fall and the so called natural pools were almost dark brown.I would'nt even put my hands in it! So no swimming Lot's of mosquitoes and a chorus of frogs all through the night. Food was good. We found it to be quite disappointing. No sauna. Check if there is water in the river before booking.

We drove from Santiago to this resort to do a gentle trek in to the mountains .The journey is very pretty through the countryside climbing up into the mountains .The resort is wonderful very fresh air a coffee stop then were taken by a local guide named William for a short trek .Being British it was midday at hot but very enjoyable with stunning views ,the guide then took us to his home .
Lunch was enjoyable .I would have liked to have stay overnight to enjoyed it more but we had to return to Santiago .A very long drive !!

If I remember correctly, this hotel/resort used to be a retreat for party members. It certainly still feels like a retreat situated next to a gorgeous river, in between to mountains and covered with lush green jungle. It's like a little haven to relax and unwind. The beautiful area is really stunning. The little village just down the road doesn't offer any entertainment and that why nature rules. There are several hiking trails staring at the hotel, and the local guide can take you to some beautiful vistas.

Rooms are large and clean and have a porch with a view over the complex and gardens. As you're located high up in the mountains, temperatures are nicely in the evening so an air conditioner is not always needed. Still each room has one.

Food is excellent and when with a large group, the cook is willing to go the extra mile and make something the majority would like. Not only the cook is this friendly, the entire staff is extremely friendly and ensures that you have a great stay.

Enjoying a beautiful mountain valley setting, this hotel is located at the end of a 70 mile drive from Santiago de Cuba, or 85 miles from Bayamo.

The hotel consists of 4 apartment blocks, each containing 7 apartments. Each apartment is reasonably spacious with a veranda overlooking the river valley, and contains a good sized WC & shower room, air-con, a large fridge, and TV. There is no safe in the room, but one can be hired in the reception at 2 CUC per night.

The hotel is suffering from a certain lack of adequate maintenance, as is typical of many Cuban hotels, but everything worked. The mountain mirador is no longer in use, but there is a pleasant short walk up the side of the river to a pretty waterfall - well worth the walk to see.

The hotel boasts an attractive bar, with an associated a la carte restaurant overlooking the mountain stream. The food was very average, but quite edible - the lack of quality being somewhat compensated by the attentive service. A Cuban band entertained us over dinner, but I'm not sure if this is a normal occurrence, or if it was for the benefit of a small group of German tourists on a mini-bus tour.

All of the staff that we encountered were friendly & efficient, and I would have no hesitation of recommending this hotel. We stayed in room 303.

Room Tip: All of the rooms appear to be fine, but the upper rooms present a slightly better view of the valley...

We had a private transfer from Trinidad to El Salton and our Cuban drivers even found it hard to find. It's in the middle of the rain forest with no outside noises or interference. Simple timber built roms with all mod cons you'll need for a relaxing stay. We had great sleep. We went on some fine walks to visit the local villagers, and see the flora and fauna. It's only 2 hours from Santiago.

Room Tip: We had room 404 - it must be the best room, on the first floor and nearest the pool/waterfall.

the hotel is excellent and it is in the middle of Forrest, and the food is great also, the bad part is the final route to arrive there. there are 7km of bad route to arrive be careful with your car.the service is excellent also the water fall, but ask before go about if the water is abundant because if you go in the time of little rains you will see an empty water fall.

Room Tip: all the rooms are excellent with view to the river.

You don't need your own transport - we took a taxi from Bayamo for 45CUCs and a taxi onwards to Santiago for 60CUCs (there were 4 of us sharing the cost). The road is only bad on the very last stretch -we had to get out and walk while our taxi struggled up the hill. Once there, we were in heaven. The rooms are spacious with large balconies for relaxing. Trees, plants, flowers everywhere. Lots of birds. You can hike, horse ride, swim under the waterfall in the hotel grounds. The food is buffet style with a different roast every night. If there is a large group staying, there is live music. Mostly it's very quiet. The staff were pleasant, but didn't put themselves out. They ordered our taxi out, and I'm pretty sure they took a cut -we were, after all, captive clients. The room phones are expensive and the one pay phone only takes tokens. They'll help you, but you can see they really want to get back to their conversations..When our taxi arrived, they just called our room to say it was there -we had to get our own cases all the way down the steps to the front.
Take a walk up the steps behind the hotel, turn left at the base of the mirador and up into what looks like private land through the gate. It is, but the people in the house are welcoming and the young man, (who works at the hotel) will show you a circular walk you can do -and help you across the river!). Tercera Frente is worth walking down the road to- very friendly people too. This stop-over was one of the best parts of our 4 week trip. The hotel is very reasonable -we paid 62CUCs a night for a twin room, including breakfast and evening meal for two (January 2012). Should have stayed longer!
