“Perfect for families!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2014 via mobile

We stayed in the bungalows and it was just perfect! I was travelling with my 2 daughters who were 6 & 16 at the time. My oldest stayed on the sofa bed in the living room and really liked having her own space. The kids club staff were fantastic and my little one couldn't wait to get there every day! Strange but we enjoyed the buffet more then the a la carte's, it was Cuba though so it wasn't really about the food. We lived he wandering magicians in the lobby bar in the evening and my kids raved about the foam party on the beach! This is definitely the place for families and being able to walk to the plaza America to go to the grocery store or bank made the location just perfect.

We loved our 14 day stay at the Sol Palmeras. Very good quality / price ratio. The beach is beautiful, clean and quiet, white sand and emerald sea. By cons, long walks for miles barefoot in the sand are not possible because the beach is less than a kilometer. This is also an advantage because the beach is very private and there are no vendors. With shoes, it is possible to take a long walk and get to Mansion Xanadu that we highly recommend. On the beach, we always found a palapa, no matter what time it was. To the west of the beach, there is an interesting place to go snorkeling with small reefs and fish diversity. We liked the gym which is new and not busy. The vegetation on the site is lush and diverse, very nice for taking walks. The pools are nice. We found the food very good, especially at the Chinese and Italian restaurant. The buffet is diverse. There are several places for lunch outside with a location directly on the beach, which we enjoyed. The visits at restaurants ''à la carte'' are unlimited, which is a positive point also. We were a little disappointed about the alcoholic brevages that are not made with real fruits. The wine is quite good. The hotel is very clean overall, a little mold in the bathroom, a detail for us. We liked the international guests (many people of South America and Europe). The animation is balanced and the staff is courteous throughout. The service at the reception is more or less effective. Beware of scams at the medical clinic of the hotel, they try to sell you unnecessary treatments (injections) without telling you the price in advance, the bill can quickly rise ...

Room Tip: The rooms on the side of the pool are very pleasant.

Just back from an amazing 2 weeks spent at Sol Palmeras hotel. The weather was glorious everyday and the beach was stunning with enough space for all guests. We did have to get up early to put our towels down on the sun loungers if we wanted to have a good spot at the pool or beach but this is true for all hotels, not exclusive to Cuba or this hotel! Our room was in the main hotel and was very close to the stage where the entertainment at night took place but I never had any problems with noise. The food at this hotel is of good quality and great variety, we spoke to people on our flight home who slated their hotel for poor quality food which really made me appreciate Sol Palmeras. Our favourite restaurants were the steakhouse and the seafood, I work in the hotel industry in the UK and can say the chefs here can make better steaks than most chefs I work with! Humberto always looked after us at the buffet. The mojitos and lemon daiquiri cocktails were a personal favourite at the bar. Francie was always pleasant and made great drinks. Tips are greatly appreciated by all the staff but I did not feel pressured to tip constantly unlike what I have read before travelling. Our maid was Lidia and made sure our fridge was always topped up with water and our room spotless. Our Thomas Cook rep Jesus was always happy to help and we ended up doing the Havana tour, swimming with dolphins and the catamaran trip. Our night at Club Tropicana in Havana was the best of our holiday and would totally recommend it. The hotel entertainment always kept myself and my partner entertained day and night, the dancers and the band were amazing! Thank you to Martica who encouraged everyone to get involved in the water polo at the pool! If you want to leave the hotel the bus stop outside the hotel is only a short ride to the town of Varadero which has bars, restaurants and shops.
This was my first trip to Cuba but it won't be my last!

I'll make this short and sweet.

This hotel was amazing . We had everything we wanted without having to run after it. There was cool events like archery and rifle shooting at lunchtime.

The restaurants were very good. The best was "El marinero" (seafood). We had a mean piece of beef covered with a brown gravy and awesome shrimp.

The rooms were very clean and well air conditioned. The maid we had was spectacular and we always got back to our room with a surprise. She conceived towel designs i had never seen before.

The beach is breathless and is the best i've seen in Cuba.

The only thing negative was the fact that the hotel was undergoing some maintenance so sleeping past 9 was difficult but it wasn't really a problem for us.. Actually it was more like an alarm clock.

The staff will do anything to make sure your stay is a memorable one.

I'd like to give a special thanks to 2 very helpful employees of the Sol Palmeras.

Carlos (waitor at the lobby bar)
You were very kind and always on top of your game. Such a service deserves to be recognized. You offer a quality service that everyone should take exame from. Thanks once again for your great help.

Mercedes (restaurant reservations and italian restaurant)

You were so helpful and kind. You always answered with a smile and made our stay that much better. Keep it up it makes a very big difference in the end!

We will be back for more Sol Palmeras! Thank you!

I have been travelling to Cuba since 1992. This was the first prolonged stay in Varadero.
The Sol Palmeras was a nice, comfortable hotel with a very friendly staff.

The checkin went smoothly.
The room on the 4th floor facing the pool was clean and spacious enough for three people. The bottle of rum was a nice touch.

The meals were good. Plenty of choices, warm and flavourful. there was a pasta area, a pizza area (excellent), a fish grill and a meat grill. The salads were always fresh and decently varied. The desserts were fairly varied and quite tasty. Being open minded and you will not be disappointed.

The pool area was comfortable with plenty of chairs, and areas of covered shelter. The water in the pool was too warm. The pool bar was nice, good service and a self serve water area. Too bad it was not a swim up bar.

The grounds were very clean and manicured.

The beach was phenomenal....very clean, with a slow gradual gradient. No waves , no seaweed. A few shells were found, as were starfish and a few needle fish. The beach was long enough to walk down and then you were greeted by a beautiful rock formation on each end.

The Plaza Americas is walking distance away (beach or road) there you can find a grocery store, Benetton's, sports stores, shoe stores...etc....if you forgot anything at home, do not worry too much...this area has decent provisions.

Our 8 day stay was very relaxing. The entertainment staff was busy and kept us busy if we wanted to be...they were, not in your face and not pushy.

Thank you for a great stay...Mom and two teenagers.

This hotel was so far the best one that I have stayed at on my three visits to Varadero. Front desk personnel were friendly and helpful. The room was clean and quiet with a beautiful view, the beach was perfect with friendly staff there all day more than willing to find a good spot for you to sit and set up a lounger for you. The food at the buffet was average but there was always a good variety. Some of the wait staff was friendly but not overly so and most of the staff aside from the front desk and beach personnel seemed rather grouchy at times and not very welcoming. The hotel itself and the outdoor surroundings were quite nice and they have a great selection of different accommodations for you to choose from while you are there. I would recommend the Chinese restaurant there, the food was excellent and was not overly crowded. The resort is just steps away from the bus stop to head into town which is perfect for those really hot days when you don't want to walk far. Nightly entertainment was greatly varied and always interesting and not so loud that you could not enjoy staying in your room if you chose to. I would stay there again

My Wife and i stayed at this hotel from the 13th_27th of June . We had a great holiday and we would return without hesitation. The room we had on the third floor was a little dated but was very clean and practical for our needs, Our maid was Tamara & she was amazing. The food is mostly good in all areas but maybe the beach bar could do cold sandwiches aswell as hot food ?. Some reviews say that you have to queue to get into the main restaurant but we only had to queue on Fridays when new clients arrived. I would like to strongly disagree with people who also say that if you dont speak Spanish , you will be ignored. I was never ignored, but that maybe because i was always polite and friendly with the staff and didnt treat them like dirt unlike some jumped up Brits & other nationalities from the eastern block. All of the staff that we dealt with where all very polite and did a brilliant job from the reception(Hugo Boss) down to the lone gardener around the pool area. The beach bar men,Oliver & team & the fish restaurant manager Javier where first class , friendly and hard working. Also the happy girl in the Icecream hut was a gem always smiling and singing to us. The beach is fantastic & clear sea was like taking a warm bath. Drinks where of a good choice & plentyfull. All in all we had a great time at the hotel and also in the town & Havana. Try the Beatles bar if you like rock music, it is in town which only costs £6 each way in a 1950s taxi.
