“Get what you pay for”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 April 2014

We got a very cheap deal to come here and we knew it was around a 3 star hotel in Cuba so I didn't get my hopes up - glad I didn't. I believe this hotel is worth what we paid but definitely nothing more.

The biggest let down was the food - I know this is a complaint by most about Cuba but the food wasn't very tasty, buffet had the same each night just with a different theme name. I ate mainly rice and pasta dishes. The biggest let down was snacks/food available near the pool - only hamburgers, fries, hot dogs or pizza (some days).

Bedding was very old and rough, room was tidy enough but not cleaned to the standard I'd have liked. The airconditioning didn't work in our room but we didn't find it too hot when we were there so we didn't change rooms.

Nice pool and swim up bar but music blares all day long - activity staff play games around the pool with adults and children in the afternoon but not a great place to sit and read near the pool which was a shame. The beach was gorgeous with a bar close by but no beach service. It's about a 10 min drive to town (Varadero) free bus shuttle from hotel a few times a day or a $5-10 cab ride.

If food doesn't bother you and you don't mind loud music in the pool and you want a cheap escape to the sun, you'd enjoy this holiday. If I returned to Cuba I'd definitely go 5 star.

Room Tip: There's also a loud disco until after 12am each night so I'd recommend block 8 or 7 to get a...

Stayed March 22-April 5. Read all the reviews and had higher expectations but this did not happen. Food is terrible. Buffet is awful with lots of canned foods. They finally had fresh pineapple the last two days we were there, what a treat. Hot food was never hot except at the grills. A la cartes no better; fake potatoes served with all meals and all had canned pea and carrots for veggies. Seafood a la carte was the worst. Canned shrimp for appetizer and basa fillets; really. You think being on the ocean you would get better fish served but not so.They did always serve whole shrimp with eyes staring at you. Bread was fresh and tasty most days but a few times buns were hard and stale. Why do some people have to touch every bun before taking one? In block 3 and tried to change room as it was very shabby and outdated. Curtains falling off their hooks, lights/light switches not working. Blew out my hair dryer even with an adapter. They kept saying there was nothing wrong with the room and they would come and fix things but it was just the general gloominess of the room. Complained about rock hard bed for 3 days and they finally brought a different mattress which was a lot better. I used bug repellent but still got terrible bites which turned into huge itchy welts. Not much to do at night after supper while waiting for the entertainment which doesn't start until 9:30. Not sure why it has to be so late? Aqua show was the only worthwhile one to see. Everyone congregrates in the lobby but you can hardly see for the smoke and the cigarette/cigar stink. The bell ringing for tips is ridiculous! Usually went back to the room and just watched TV. Never had a problem with loungers at the beach. Most days there are guys there to help set up them up for you. After a week they usually had them already set up for us in our spot. Watch out for the young lounger guys as they really hit on the young girls. It was like a soap opera every day to see who was the pick of the day. This hotel could easily be ten times better by making significant changes. I have travelled around the world and always try to give the reviews the benefit of the doubt but in this case the bad ones are the correct ones. The only thing that made this trip worthwhile was the wonderful weather, the blue ocean and the white sand.

We stayed at this resort April 10 to 20. We were a bit concerned over some reviews but were very happy with our choice of this hotel. Reception was fast and staff delivered us and luggage to our room. We were in building 7 close to beach and pool and with the updated heat pump. Although the room is dated and sparsely furnished it was clean and comfortable with great ventilation and cooling from the heat pump.

Staff at this resort were terrific. Our maid, our waitresses, bartender, cooks, reception staff and gardeners were all courteous, competent and friendly. The staff and the beautiful landscaping made the Hotel Roc Arenas Doradas enjoyable.

The beach was great, never overcrowded. We spent most of our day at the beach but the few times we went to the pool was fun, It was clean and bar service was great for the pool crowd.

The buffet was very good, a good variety and we always a meal we enjoyed. The carving station and grill and the pasta were very good. We ate at the Italian, International and Cuban - all had good food and great service. The breakfast omelettes were excellent. Coffee bar was a great way to start your day.

We enjoyed the dancers who preformed most nights. There were mosquitoes in the lobby but we were not bothered in areas where the breeze was blowing. Bring repellent.

Overall it was a very pleasant and relaxing vacation - great staff and landscaping

I have Been to Cuba 5 times, and have stayed here 3 times now. The first time was about 6yrs. ago, and I was also here last April. This year I was here with my wife April 5th-19th. I have to say we have seen a lot of improvements, but they still need to fix some things...

I would say the food is generally pretty good, better than most of what I have seen!! Had a very good steak meal at the "Natura" restaurant, also ate at the Italian restaurant, it was pretty good. The buffet most of the time is good, but after 2 weeks it gets a bit repetitive. Some of the highlights are the fresh baked buns and breads, the ice cream, some of the cheeses. My wife also said the omelets were good most of the time, as was the pasta bar!

As for the staff, most are great, especially if you treat them like human beings!!! I don't know how many times I saw guests asking for food or drinks or whatever, and never saying please or thank you, I even saw a few people snapping their fingers at staff. Rude!! I doubt they would act that way at home... I would like to say thanks to Daniel, Milady, and Daisy at the pool bar, and also our maid Daisy. Also Hello to Daniel the gardener, who always says Hola with a big smile! (please forgive me if I have misspelled any names) One negative thing though,is the staff at the stores in the resort, they don't seem to care much for customer service, and the prices on some items seem to change depending on who is at the cash........

As for the resort itself, I have seen a lot of improvements! New A/C units in several buildings, they were making some repairs to the boardwalk going to the beach, the bathrooms at the lobby, and pool restaurant were all being kept clean, and had hand soap and toilet paper. The pool area was kept pretty clean, even though a lot of people can't seem to throw their empty cups in the garbage, or their cigarette butts in the ashtrays. They have also added a few hammocks down at the beach. The grounds and gardens are kept quite well.

We stayed in building 3 on the second floor. The room was nice, looked like it had been recently painted, the a/c worked great, mini fridge worked well, t.v. is small and reception wasn't great on all the channels. Beds were hard, pretty much the usual for Cuba, new mattresses would be a plus! Never had any lack of hot water.

As for the beach it was amazing as always!

However a couple of things need fixing.

Our check in was very slow as there was only one woman working the desk. We got in at about midnight, and we were 2nd or 3rd in line, and it took about 30 mins. to get our room keys etc. By the time we left the lobby, there was probably 12-15 couples behind us, and I would bet it took them a while to get checked in. The woman at the desk was pleasant though and I'm sure working as fast as she could, but the hotel should schedule more staff when expecting groups of guests.

Also the hotel has set aside an area on the beach exclusively for it's Italian guests, which is not an issue most of the time. But on days when the beach is busy, and you want some shade, it was a bit annoying to see empty spots in the "exclusive" section, and yet some of the Italian guests are taking up spaces in the other area of the hotel's beach. Not exactly fair, when I have paid for my vacation also.

And lastly, the biggest problem was the mosquitos! Six years ago they were around, but with bug spray they were manageable, last year, for half the week, there was none, then it rained and they got reasonably bad. This year they were bad for the whole two weeks, from dusk, through the night! Even with bug spray, we pretty much ended up in our room every night after 7:30-8:00pm. I did go speak to a couple of ladies at customer service (and asked that they pass my comments on to the manager), about the mosquitos, but the impression I got was that there was nothing that would or could be done..... Because of this we will have to think very carefully about whether we will return or not. We have had some great times here, but this was a big problem and possibly a deal breaker, which is sad because this resort would be fantastic without the mosquitos!

Overall I'd say that it was a strong 4 star for Varadero (even though it varies b/w a 3.5 and 4 star). Travelled solo with my 3 yr old; also worth mentioning that I was 33 weeks pregnant.

Rooms: Bring big plug for bath if your little ones don't take showers; rooms clean; had hot water always and good pressure with both rooms that we had
Block 3 phone lines don't work and therefore we transferred rooms to block 2. Heard the disco music at 11 but it never woke up my son and I was able to fall back asleep. Other little comment was my son was able to open the door to the room in block 2 on his own so i would sleep with one eye open. Other ppl told me that they had a chain on the door out of reach of little hands. Well needless to say, in either rooms, there were no chains but in our first room at least the door was too heavy for him to open.
Service: one evening, the receptionist was telling my hubby that it was another hotel and couldn't patch him through. Receptionist in the morning found this strange. Needless to say we were patched through that evening. To call back home was 2 pesos a minute so preferred that he call us.
Grounds: clean. Might be too much walking for ppl with mobility issues
Restaurant: buffet is amazing. Despite some reviews of food being bland, I always found something tasty to eat. Each night has a theme and there are always 2 chefs making either fresh pasta or chicken/turkey/ pork and fish. The a la carte was terrible. Actually went to the buffet afterwards to eat some tasty food.
Staff: spoke to other families and apparently staff would ask them for kids clothes and toys. I guess being 33 weeks pregnant and solo with my toddler that warranted being left alone lol but I had read reviews beforehand so I did bring a few hand me downs. They were so appreciative!!
Beach was gorgeous but my 3 yr old preferred the pool. Pool is great for lil ones. Has a shallow end that you can walk into and it gradually gets deeper. There were plenty of kids for my son to play with. they also Had a wading pool which we never used.
Kids club: didn't use it much but participated in the activities when animator was by the pool. The club house has a swing set, slides etc.
I would recommend this hotel to all and will likely go back again- this time with the hubby lol.

After reading some of the mixed reviews on here, I sceptically took my family of 6 to this resort from April 1-7 2014 and had a great holiday!!

I think a lot of the negative reviews on this property are people who go with a champagne taste and a beer budget!!

Check in was quick and painless, I had asked for connecting rooms, 2 cots and a new building. I got 2 of the three and to be honest, the old building was fine, the AC had to work pretty hard to keep it cool enough at night, but it did the job. On one day our toilet didnt flush, they had someone down within a couple hours to fix it. Rooms are dated, yes, but clean and comfy(all you do is sleep and get changed in there anyway lol)

The food was...well...its Cuba. Buffet has something to eat for every meal, changed things up best they could. Always had great omelets and bread in the morning(bring hot sauce and Peanut butter), also had something different on the grill every night. International a-la-carte had GREAT food, the Italian was a bit bland, but edible. Pool restaurant has decent burgers, the only place i didn't care for was the beach bbq. My burger one day was a bit raw in the middle and my stomach was a bit off the next. (maybe they need to tell the guy on the BBQ to cook the meat a bit more)

There is an Italian section at this resort, yes. But its only a small segment on the edge of the beach and a 4 person Entertainment team. The entertainment team was actually very interactive with ALL guests. The reviews that say this is an issue are waaay off base.

The people at this place are amazing, Rosie at the coffee bar, Miladys, Daniel, Joel, (4th guy I'im sorry i forget the name) all at the pool bar..all great.

The beach?? Its worthy of a postcard!! Its worth the price of admission all by itself.

One complaint I read on here was that the entertainment staff is bad....Probably the most inaccurate comment on here. These guys are great!! games at the pool and beach are ongoing, They don't push you, but make you feel welcome to join. Even the evening shows weren't bad. I had a blast one night with a type of "name that tune" they had at the theatre.
The shining star at this resort is my friend Ligsandro(towel exchange in the morning/MC of events in the afternoon and evening), Always fun and engaging, he knew my name by the second day!
This resort is by no means perfect. But look at what you are spending versus what you are getting and its a no brainer!! Its clean, had decent food, great people, and an amazing beach! !

We are frequent guests of this hotel ( returning for the 13th time) and really enjoy returning to visit friends that we have made in the resort. The staff here are wonderful. From the staff in the buffet , in the lobby, at the front desk, at the bars, in the snack bar, and at the beach grill, all the staff are so friendly and will bend over backwards to help you! We were there from March 29 to April 5, 2014.

I noticed in one review someone made a comment that the hotel was catering to the Italians, Wrong!!! It was a contract made with a group in Italy. But it was a trial period. We spoke to the manager and he assured us that things would change if he knew about the problems. Before we left the resort we could see signs of change!

This resort is not a large one so you get to know everyone and they get to know you! It is a very welcoming feeling!
