Unfortunately, this was our first trip to Cuba and it was a let down. The hotel is under renovation, so there was a lot of noise and the regular buffet restaurant wasn't available, as it was under construction also. We had to take our own bags to our room, which is not fun at 10pm. The public washrooms were locked, this did not make any sense! We had to wait until we got to our room and it was musty and dated. We turned off the air because it was blowing dust and mold into our room. We left the balcony door ajar to let in the breeze, which was nice, however the spiders are poisonous in Cuba. One of our friends was bitten and had to see a doctor. Our room attendant - Martha - was fantastic, a very nice lady. They are in desperate need of clothing, in all sizes, if you are going to take something, take clothes. We lived off of pizza (near the beach) and omelettes, the food was not very good. It was a shame, because we were really looking forward to going to Cuba, we just didn't have a good experience at this hotel. We took the double decker bus into Varadero and around to the other hotels, which we found to be fun. There are other hotels that are nicer, don't go to this one. The beach was incredible, due to Hurricane Sandy; there were an enormous amount of shells everywhere.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the main hotel, the other "family" areas are farther from the beach.

As my title states it was our 3rd trip to the Brisas, our 5th to Varadero and our 7th to Cuba.....We have fallen in love with this resort and this country.

Each year we go back to find new improvements. Yes, this resort is under renovations and yes there iare some minor inconviences. However when this is completed you will be eating in a beautiful dining room.

The pros....wonderful, friendly staff that will remember you (yes, you stay with them for a week once a year and they remember you). The staff remembered my grandchildren and they were there in 2010. Always greeted with a big hug, the smiles and the laughs. Special thank you to Carlos and Gisile, you made our holiday!

The beach - the best in Varadero.

The drinks - always lots and what you want. The coffee bar is fantastic. The hotel has a "tea station" set up opposite the coffee bar. This is new and many guests enjoyed it. The hotel has also set up a "wine bar" that guests can help themselves to wine throughtout the day. Again, this is a new addition for the resort.

The food - it is improving each year. In my previous reviews of this resort I stated that you will not starve. There is always many different selections for you. It is not the same as the food in Canada - how can it be? We use different spices, different cuts, different tastes. We always had lots to eat and were never hungry. My grandkids are very picky eaters and they always found something they enjoyed.

The cons - front desk/reception. There are three of these ladies that are very, very nasty. These "ladies" believe that the guests are a great inconvience to their social life. They will stand there and talk amonst themselves...totally ignoring the guest. And this is at check in and it goes downhill from there. The other reception staff are OK providing that there is not one of the three nasty ones there. I found if one of those are there the other staff minics the bad behaviour. Not enough to ruin a vacation, or not return but worth commenting on. The solution is to not go to reception when they are there. It is unfortunate that this is the first impression guests have of the resort.

People if you want Canadian standard, Canadian food stay in Canada. If you want a vacation that you will remember for the rest of your life - visit Cuba. The people are the most friendly, the safest island we have ever visited. The Brisas del Caribe is the best resort, and we keeping coming back every year. (Even hoping to return in May)

I was there for 7 nights Nov. 18th to 25th 2012. Had a blast, I went with two other friends and we all had an excellent time. We met a bunch of other Canadians at the resort & spent time partying with them. My first room the AC wasn't working, I went to the front desk and they gave me another room no problem. The food was good at all three al la carte's, we also went into Veradaro & had a great meal at El Rancho. We had brought clothing and a bunch of items from the dollar store for the maids & left them something on our pillows every day, the room was very clean!! The best thing about this place was the staff, they were all so friendly & always smiling. I hope to go back!!!!!
(P.S. bring some soya sauce & hot sauce to add some flavour to the buffet food)
We spoke to one of the ladies at the front desk and hired a private guide to take us to Havana for the day his name was William. It was cheaper than the bus $45 each and we had a blast with him & his driver Freddy!! We hired them for another day and they took us to Guama which is an Indian Village, Crocodile reserve two hours out of Veradaro, was great & I enjoyed driving through all the villages on the way. We stopped at a private house for lunch and tried Crocodile :).

Room Tip: South side is quieter but the North side is closer to the action

I loved this hotel. DON'T LISTEN TO THE BAD REVIEWS. There were a few chips in the tile of the bathroom. But seriously, did we come to Cuba to stay in the hotel room all day. NOPE. It's great. The thing that makes the place so great are the workers. We stayed their for 14 days so we got to know a few of the workers quite well. They are SOOO friendly and funny. They also have this fake currency in the hotel called "funny money" and since we went with our family the kids had so much fun gaining tons of it. We have four boys so by the end of our vacation we had about $200,000 worth of it. We bought everything in the auction on our final day of the trip. The beach is nice and they have tons of fun games to play. The bar is awesome and the food is pretty good. The night shows are awesome too. After the sunsets the beach is all dark and we had a blast running around and playing tag on the dark beach. They have a HUGE beffe

Cuba is also amazing, Havana is so old and stuffed with culture. If you are going to Cuba, you have to go to Havana. It's amazing. Overall, the place was great, the best part was the energy at the hotel. The staff were the best I had ever seen. Soooo amazing, the staff at the hotel made this trip the best one i have ever taken. GREAT PLACE!

Room Tip: Try to get a room closer to the beach. All the activities are on that side.

After reading the reviews I was hesitant about going here as well. But paying 825 for a week in cuba there isnt much to complain about. Sure the rooms' paint was cracking, the bathroom door didn't close, nor did the closet door (i actually broke it off accidentally), and our air conditioner didnt turn down. I had a great time. If you're someone who spends all your time in Cuba in your room. Than this is not the place for you.

When we were there the bathrooms near the North pool did not have toilet seats, and neither did the womens' in the lobby (however they were under renos, if they still are ladies use the guys bathroom- theres a toilet seat in there).

The beach was nice, gorgeous actually and the people setting up activiites were really cool. We walked down the beach and would grab drinks from other resorts hah.

The food wasnt bad but it was great. Try and get as many meals at the a la cartes as you can. They dont really keep track of what rooms go when, so if you're a large group there's no reason you cant eat at one every night.

*If you go* The maids really appreciate soap, toothpaste (it takes a week of wage to pay for toothpaste!) and tooth brushes. As well as shampoos and conditioner are very welcomed. The housekeeper wrote us a touching note at the end of the week thanking us. It was awesome

If you're looking at every detail when you go to a resort than do not go here. If youre looking to meet some really cool people (which we did) and have some good drinks and good times- come here. You won't be sorry!!

Room Tip: Go to the south side!

My husband and I recently got married at this Resort on Nov. 16th 2012. They went above and beyond and gave us the most beautiful wedding I could have ever imagined. They did not miss a beat. The decor was stunning, the cake and champagne as well, we had a beautiful reception in a gorgeous restaurant that was restricted to the other guests for the night. We had a great honeymoon suite where champagne had been brought to our room. The next morning we were served a beautiful breakfast and champagne right to our room. We felt like the entire hotel was catering to us. It was beautiful. Big thank you to Giselle the wedding coordinator who we COULD NOT have done this without. Also to Estella for all that she contributed as well. Thank you to our cuban band, they were awesome as well. Great Staff Great times and even greater memories! Thanks so much

We went for a week from dec 8 to dec 15. The rooms:
Stayed in rooms 207 and 209. The air condition machines were loud and the temperature could not be controlled. They were either on or off. It got really cold in the rooms at night so bring long sleeves pj. When the a/c were off, the rooms smelled musty. The rooms are not sound proof so expect to here people talking when walking by or making noises in the next room. Overall, the rooms were clean and tidy. The bed sheets, towels and floor were changed and cleaned daily. Even when you didn't tip the maid (were told by the people we meet there). We get a bottle of water every day because we tip the maid 1 peso each day. Make sure u put the empty bottle beside the tip and the maid's card. The one day we forgot, we didn't get a bottle eventhough we gave her three peso instead of the usual one peso. If u need more towels, just tell the maid. I tried writing but she couldn't read it.
Our clothes were always damp due to the moisture in the room. No iron so you will have to bring your own if you are picky about wrinkles like us. There were 120v outlets but they were labeled 220v.
The food/drinks:
The temporary buffet is in the south building. There were always something to eat even with picky kids like mine. Just expect a lot of ham and chicken every day. Bring an umbrella just in case it rains. We were soaked walking from the buffet back to our room.
If you tip the waitresses/waiters they will went out of their way to reserve a table for u. Just make sure u go back to the same area. If u are going in group of four or less, there are always empty tables for u.
We tried two out of the three a la carte. The Italian (Fantasia) which located inside the temporary buffer in the south was better of the two.
The international restaurant is in the north. You will have to go pass the kid pools into a very dimly lite area. The restaurant will look like it is closed from the outside. There is a theatre attached to it. You will have to go inside and go pass the bar on the right hand side to the double doors. The restaurant is inside.
We had beef, lamb, chicken and pork for dinner. Pork was really dried. Beef was chewy. Lamb was good but if u don't like the over whelming smell, u won't like it. All were served with white rice and a bit of steamed beans and peas. The entrees were not so great. Again we are very picky eaters so u might fine them otherwise. Nothing much here for vegetarians.
The 24 hrs snack bar is near the beach in the north section. It's across from the Cuban grill restaurant. The back of this restaurant is near the children play ground and kiddy pool. It's smelly! Like sewer smell.
At the bar, u can get pizzas, hot dogs, sandwiches or buggers. Again, it's near the beach so it's out of place if u need a snack after dark.
At lunch, there are other food being offered around this area. There were roasted pork (not like the one from Chinese supermarket/restaurant), chicken, fish, and rice consistently with some minor changes each day. This is very convience if you want to stay at the beach instead of having to walk all the way back to the buffet in the south. There are seating under the shades. You will need to bring our own napkins if you want to eat here during lunch. Drinks are also provided in this area.
The coconuts are one peso each. Not sweet at all.
The drinks:
There are bar everywhere. The piña colada were better at the bar in the reception area. Coffee and cappuccino were better here too. Bring your own cup if you like a large quality to go or else it will be on a extra small plastic cup.
Extras:
Massages are being offer in the north building and the beach. It's 20-23 peso for 30 mins or 40 for an hour. She was really good.
Don't get your nails done here. It's a waste of money. She doesn't really know what she's doing and it costs the same as on Canada. Not clean neither. She only has one set of everything and used on me and my mother in law at the same time without washing them.
Everything must be paid in cash. They don't take credit cards except for paying for excursions and gift shops inside the reception area.
The gift shops near the beach will take Canadian and US money. Don't borther exchanging to peso. Bargain with them when u buy there. If you can get your hands on US dollar bills, get some. They are great for tipping. The conversion is crazy. We get 92 peso for $100 CAN regardless of the day and when u get it back to Canadian dollars u will loose the same amount. $100 CUC will give u $92 Can.
You will have to pay $25 CUC per person when u leave Cuba for tax. Baby under one excluded.
There are no bank machines in the resort. U will need to go into town for that. Credit cards only, no debit and must be non-American bank.

Excursions:
U can get a taxi to go on an excursion for much cheaper than going on a tour bus. There is a tour guide that will go with u. The taxi driver speaks minimal English. U also go directly where u want to go rather than having to wait while the tour bus picking/dropping people off from different resort. The bus tours include lunch but its still cheaper with u paying for your own lunch. You can also spend more time at any place u like.
When going on a taxi, make sure u negotiate the price first. Cash only.
At Havana, there will be Cuban women in flowery dresses asking u to take picture with them. DONNOT take picture with them unless you are willing to pay $10 peso. They will demand it. Ask before u touch exotic animals or classic cars u see. U will be charge for them too. If you have young children, just avoid the Havana tour all together.
